I am sick and tired of Useless Maemo Apps, iam about to say goodbye to Nokia

I am so sick and tired of symbian/Maemo, etc.. Nokia has been acting so desperately but unable to compete and fullfill their user's taste, unfortunately Symbian failed miserably, here in the U.S, if you say Symbian , meego or Maemo, people will laugh at you, Android is the future, plenty of APPS to download, very useful things, nice GPS. what do we get as Maemo users, nothing, i have been with Nokia since 2005, i've always loved their N-series, now I am about to say goodbye and move to either iOP or Android..

What Maemo apps exactly are useless?
99% of the programs in the repos are useful.

Contrast that to Android, useless crap left and right, and on every app store. iOS programs are toys (blame that on the restrictions placed by Apple. Even a jailbroken iPhone is no fun.)

Re: I am sick and tired of Useless Maemo Apps, iam about to say goodbye to Nokia

Honestly, what did you expect to get by posting that here? Why don't you go off to the Android communities and post how much happier you are now that you're poking around with one of these devices, instead? What's the point of opening up a thread JUST to vent that out in that way?

Don't get me wrong--I understand how frustrated you are and what an incredible breath of fresh air it is to go to a platform with far more support from every direction you look in, where you actually get a myriad of available applications to choose from and the apps get updated and improved over the years instead of stagnating... and a platform where buying the next generation of device doesn't mean you have to start all over again as a developer and wait for re-releases all over again as an end-user. But you KNOW posting that on here will only enrage the Maemo/MeeGo faithful and make them feel defensive. ...or was that the whole point? Are you really that bored?

PS - Yes, I'm aware of the irony. ;)

I agree with this post. Maemo has a pleasantly high percentage of useful apps if you ask me...

Relax. Nokia knows the problems with Symbian/Maemo/meeGo and will soon deliver loads of WP phones. These are super-slick ultra modern, fashionable devices that does everything you want, tons of apps are already made, and several more tons are coming. The OS is still fresh out the oven, so not all features are in place, but continuous updates will pour out like flocks of birds and make Nokia-WP the best experience ever.

Myself, I like Symbian and Harmattan (MeeGo is dead and boring as far as I'm concerned).

Anyway, in case you don't like any of this, remember:
Bada rox - always.

Actually, here in the US, the only reason why most people would laugh at the mention of "Maemo" and "MeeGo" is because, to someone who hasn't heard them used before--which is a majority of people here, they sound like baby-words and babble. Nokia hasn't been particularly brilliant at naming these OS's.

Android has instead of...

MicroB: Android browser, Firefox, Opera Mobile, Dolphin and more--all of which have the option to view either mobile or desktop versions of websites. It's GREAT having options, isn't it?

aircrack-ng: Nothin', as far as I can tell. You got me there! Sorry, you're going to have to hold off of cracking into wifi routers and go do something legal instead.

preenv: Android OS--you know, there are far more applications on a platform that is supported by hardware manufacturers and its own founders--unlike the WebOS platform emulation that you shoehorn with preenv. Still, if you REALLY want WebOS apps, you got me there, too! :)

nitdroid: A real and fully functional Android operating system, with working phone, camera and other hardware--because Android devices were made for Android to start with. nitdroid is a nice shoehorn, but it's not quite the same as a fully functioning OS.

Everyone knows Nokia F****D everything up, the possibilties of this and future linux devices were endless, but as usual people who lead big companies such as this lack foresight and therefore consigned this great OS to an untimely slow death. FYI unless you are or were a valued member of the community, no.......one......cares

It can make and receive them. You just can't hear anything. Then again, do you really want to? I mean I hardly use my phone features at all, texting, emailing, etc. Quicker to just say "hey, we on for some LAN?" Then to have to actually talk to someone and ask how they're doing, etc.

Besides, saying that Android has Opera and Firefox isn't a plus over Maemo anyhow, since they are also on Maemo.

I recently bought an Android tablet, and besides the fact that NITDroid runs better on my non-overclocked N900, I would say 90% of all the Android apps are duplicates of other Apps and the other 10% are just plain garbage.

How about Android's complete lack of running any of the gnu utilities without rooting? What about being able to multi-task without having a third party app? Or even with a third party App, multitasking on the Android platform is like being punched in the face. Irritates the hell out of me.

Oh, and I recently discovered 'cause of only having a tablet without 3G, that there currently is no Offline Google Maps.

That is definitely one thing Nokia did right (even if the N900's version of OviMaps is missing voice activation by default).

Yeah... that's quite possibly one of the highest features I want on any phone... the ability to make/receive and hear the phone calls.

Quote:

I guess that's where we differ. I actually use my phone for voice - personal and business. And to be honest, having the needs of folks that don't use voice or the phone features dictate my usage of those features is quite annoying.

It's like me handing somebody a toilet to take a **** on, yet removing the handle since I don't like shiny objects and don't have a use for them.

If you don't use a phone for the phone features, then honestly a phone isn't what you needed. And I don't want to drop into that semantic-laden battle that a N900 isn't a phone, it's a portable computer. The moment you added the GSM radio and ability to text via a phone number and not via Google Voice or some other relay system like you can do on your computer, it became a phone.

Quote:

Besides, saying that Android has Opera and Firefox isn't a plus over Maemo anyhow, since they are also on Maemo.
But their development and updates is most likely going to continue on Android - and I need improvements for HTML5. I have doubts for Maemo.

And I say that about Maemo. Too many holes too.

Quote:

Then it was the wrong device for you then.

Quote:

What about being able to multi-task without having a third party app?
Multi-tasking is great on the N900. I just don't find it all that useful when I have to switch to a phone call and it just hangs and I miss a very important phone call. Or that really... I'm not finding a lot of apps to multi-task. Browser, Maps, E-Mail (Modest sucks), Terminal (many commands there, but not GitHub/Capistrano), and... well, that's about it when I used my N900.

But yeah... multi-tasking on Android plain sucks.

Quote:

Or even with a third party App, multitasking on the Android platform is like being punched in the face. Irritates the hell out of me.
Agree here. If it did work better, I'd know I'd multi-task more apps than I ever could on Maemo - more there that I'd use. Maemo is missing apps that I'd use in conjunction.

Quote:

Oh, and I recently discovered 'cause of only having a tablet without 3G, that there currently is no Offline Google Maps.
Yep. Tablets are different than the phones in that respect - you were talking about the N900 and the corresponding Android phones earlier, right? Now the jump to the tablets is a bit... well, uneven. Phones have 3G + Wifi. Tablets - well, my Xoom at least - is only Wifi.

Apples to apples, oranges to oranges. I think your comparison is a bit amiss.

Quote:

That is definitely one thing Nokia did right (even if the N900's version of OviMaps is missing voice activation by default)
It still had to "connect" out to "Find Places" - at least initially that was the case.

Seriously, NITDroid? Not only do you have to reboot to use that, at which point you are deprived of the loveliness which is Maemo5, power and battery management doesn't work properly on it. It won't recognise a fully charged battery when I put a freshly charged one in, often giving me a battery low message then shutting down. It doesn't do any power management on the wifi radio, meaning if I have wifi on it'll get rather hot and drain the battery quicker than necessary. NITDroid, unless significant improvement has occurred in the last release or two, is lousy.

Don't take this rant as criticism of the NITDroid devs, I appreciate and respect all the hard work they have put in to getting it to its current state, it is just that I don't find its current state very usable, it is only useful if I really need to use an Android app.

MyNokiaN900 2011-09-05 19:59

Re: I am sick and tired of Useless Maemo Apps, iam about to say goodbye to Nokia

Having put to rest my Nokia N900 (RIP MyNokiaN900) for a Samsung Galaxy S2, the one thing I miss the most is the ability to multi-boot into Maemo or Android or run scripts via X-Term. Having experienced Android for the past 3 weeks, I've been pleasantly surprised at the speed of the device together with the Android OS. I have also gotten involved in the Android Community and started to experiment with loading new ROMS, and Kernels etc. It's good fun getting involved, experimenting, telling others etc.

Any device or should I say Smartphone can feel like a stupid toy if one doesn't take the time to understand it, break it, rebuild it, learn it, install new software, play with it, break it again, get on the forums and ask loads of questions, answer questions other are asking.... all of these things are part of having a Smartphone.

When I read the first post I just thought.... TOSSER!, you've not experienced the N900 because you have never gotten involved or contributed to this wonderful Maemo Community. 1 Post is hardly getting involved. Like others have said, there are some awesome programs that Maemo has that Android or Apple can just dream of (TV remote control programs come to mind) and I suspect this chap will go to Android, or Apple and get bored very quickly with the tens of thousands of the same App, with 5 star ratings...

Probably the worst place to moan about Maemo as well... Clearly not very bright! ;)

Hmm, I wouldn't say that "nothing" is useless on the repos. Tarring everything with the same brush there and life isn't like that.

I've installed a couple of whoppers from the repos that came straight back off within minutes.
