more issues w/Cingular setup
Hi All,
I have been trying to get my 770 to connect to Cingulars GRPS network via my Motorola A1200. I have read the previous posts in this forum and have verified that my settings in the 770 are correct. they Are: AP:wap.cingular username:WAP@CINGLUARGPRS.COM Password:CINGULAR1 I still cannot connect. If I make the dialin number *99# I get an error which says that the connection to the PHONE did not succeed. If I change the dialin number to Cingular's 14152441012 (from my phone setup) I get an error which says the NETWORK connection did not succeed. My A1200 connects just fine with the identical settings, but has a primary gateway (66.209.11.61) and a port (9201) defined in the settings that I can't determine where would go in the 770 setup advanced settings, and from other posts does not appear to be called out in othes peoples 770 setup. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks in advance! |
Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
I also have Cingular / ATT, but use a Samsung SYNC phone. Try this
AP = isp.cingular dial up number = *99***1# These are the settings I use on my N800 and it works fine under both EDGE and HSDPA with a BT connection between the devices. Good luck! |
Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
Thanks for the suggestion,
With this config, I get the PHONE connection failed error. Are these settings what you use on the phone as well as the 770? Perhaps they have to match between phone and 770. Since I have had cingular for a while and they don't support the A1200, they may have changed without me knowing. |
Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
If you're not using a tethered plan (i.e., the MediaMAX 200 plan) then isp wont work. You need to use wap.cingular for non-tethered plans.
It works perfectly for me with my Nokia 6682, N93i and Samsung SCH-A717. Just use the N800's default setup for the Cingular network, but change both instances of isp to wap. Should work fine. |
Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
I'm not just real knowledgeable on this but I've seen a lot of posts that indicate that there are connection issues with Motorola phones. At some point you might want to stop beating your brains out and see if anyone else ever had success with your phone or a similar model.
Your original settings with wap.cingluar do look correct to me. |
Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
It would be a drag if it were motorola specific. The phone I have is available only in China, and from a few online vendors (which is too bad, since its a linux OS smartphone with a touchscreen that looks like a Star Trek communicator). I am using a tethered plan so I may go back to the phone side and see if the ISP. solution works on the phone first. Clearly I'm not quite ready to give up. I like my phone and my 770 too much to not have them play nice together.

Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
I just switched to Cingular / ATT from T-Mobile 3 months ago. When I first switched, I signed up with unlimited media max bundle and had issues connecting. I was told I had to switch to one of the PDA connect plans for it all to work correctly. As soon as I did, I was able to connect with no problems. The network may be preventing you from connecting because you don't have the correct plan. It's just another way for them to get more money out of you.

Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
I'll look into the PDA plan. That figures. Someday I'm going to find the marketing/lawyer guy who comes up with this multi-level service garbage, and smack him.

Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
I've been using the regular MediaNet plan for months.
Try making EVERYTHING CAPITALS: AP: WAP.CINGULAR USERNAME: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM PASSWORD: CINGULAR1 I have no issues whatsoever tethering with my Nokia N95 or N75. |
Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
I had a hard time setting this up myself, and not everything is always the same everywhere in the settings.
For the username both WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM and ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM seem to be valid, but which works when or where I have no clue. I use WAP and it works fine for me. Make sure you have it set to packet data on the connection. As for the access point name, it MUST be wap.cingular (or whatever your phone's settings say, which I believe is this for everyone). The dial up number I use is *99#, though sometimes a delay might be needed in the number depending on the phone I guess, which is why (I assume) there are many variations on this number. The password is always CINGULAR1 For this post case matters. I use the LG CU500, and in it I had to check the settings manually to come about some of these myself rather than listen to what many other websites had. You might also want to make sure you have Bluetooth DUN enabled on your phone (consult the manual if you don't know how, or the Internet). And of course with Cingular/AT&T you need to have the unlimited media plan. Hope this helps and good luck. |
Re: more issues w/Cingular setup
I just wanted to report that this info worked great for me with a N810 and Samsung SGH-D807 phone.
I tried to get tethering to work for MANY hours on a RIM Blackberry Curve 8310 with 4.2.2 software and it just wouldn't work. Connection failed no matter what settings I tried. After much research/googling, I learned that the Blackberry has a hard time with tethering on tablets, and there's hope that this will be fixed with the Blackberry v4.3 software. So, I gave up on the BB and got the Samsung, and it worked without any fuss. Very very satisfied. Thanks to everyone on this thread for the helpful info! d |
