[Request] Help fight spam together!

Ok, this idea may sound really stupid but I'm hoping if we can get the active community members clicking on individual links (yes, its similar to clicking ads on certain places in order to support the place of one's interest) that are related to spam. We can possibly tell moderators to look at these reported threads first.

For some reason I'm thinking their report system is setup in a way of having the amount of clicks for each reported post. The higher the number of clicks on a specifically reported post the higher it will show on the moderator's list for reported post.

I am also hoping for moderators to also delete the spam threads along with banning the user by their IP address to prevent spams from new username but same IP address instead.

Obviously in the long haul I/We would like to see a security boost on the talk.maemo.org in a manner similar to what JohnLF wrote.

In the meantime I hope people would continuously click on spam threads whenever possible. No you will not get a reward ;) apart from helping out the community.

Below is a list of corresponding thread topics, spammer's username and the link to report:

Hmm, if only the mods can restrict the number of characters for 1st time poster, at least it wont occupy big pages in the google reader feed.

At least put this limitation for 14 days:
1. Limit the number of characters
2. Restrict the number of thread post it can create
3. possible to restrict html link for first time poster :P

Arrrggghhh, New spam is appearing quicker than I can report them! Damn the 60 second wait!

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

All right thats it. I've reported spam at approximately the same rate that jackass "broadcast" has created new threads.

Where do I sign up to be a mod and wield a banhammer against numbnuts like this?

Where are the moderators?

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

All these spammers are states side, why cant they have more control over there???.

The mods are not coming on here so much now as they occupy other sites.

Only takes one report per spam post to identify but there has to be a mod or someone on here with the capabilities of spam removal.

Now is the time to hand this spam removal over to selected members.

If they do not do something this site will become unusable for sure.

Damn this is one persistent spammer. Where are the mods at? Reporting 1 spam thread per minute is wasting too much time...

This site has really gone to the dogs now.

Everyone report spam for username losser1. top of the new threads list

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

When you report a specific post using the "Report This" link, a mail goes out to the moderators of that specific sub-forum. It means that it's enough to report one post of one spammer, because the user account including all posts will be wiped out and the ip address banned.

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

i think its better to temporary disable creation of new accounts.. (for 2 days..) to stop the spammers coming up with new user ids.. and probably a good way of authentication like e-mail address, mobile serial numbers etc// or something better.

and one more thing new user can't open new threads for one week.. !!!

uvatbc 2011-09-17 08:40

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

I thought it required a minimum number of spam reports for the mods to act on it...

That would just shift the spamming by one week

i suggest posting a response to the spam thread and indicate that he/she has already reported that thread as such so that the next user doesn't have to report it as spam all over again..

Hm, maybe I should as if they need some more moderators, take down spammers is something I can do and have done before (as a moderator in a big Swedish site)

Only one minor downside to that is that it bumps up the thread, but since the mods should hopefully clean it up soon, it should be acceptable.

Also: @mods: When you clean up the threads from that user can you also cleanup the rss feeds for t.m.o.?

It's not fun wading thru spam entries trying to get to the first meaningful topic...

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

Just use Report This for now. I (and other moderators) respond as soon as possible with a one-touch ban-and-clean.

The problem is that whoever is behind this is relentless. I agree that another line of defense would be very helpful.

Personally I prefer the suggestion of one person reporting and letting everyone else know in the thread. Checking out every single email takes time-- much of it wasted.

Texrat, Id highly suspect that all these identical spam posts are coming from the same IP/subnet. Just ban THAT.

Ban-and-clean also blocks IP. I am seeing numerous distinct IPs and subnets.

Its just a botnet.

Estel 2011-09-17 22:33

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

Don't want to discourage You guys, but only one effective method to fight it is more secure automatic verification system. Spambots are automates (obviously), so fighting man-power against it is a no-go for a long-term.

On the other hand, most spammers doesn't write their bots, they just use ones from net. So, it's relatively easy to block them, as they're not so adaptable. PHPbb got many installable method for blocking dumb bots, unfortunately, I got no idea about vBulletin. I suppose it's up to Reggie (joys of non-community governed hosting for forum)... Was he pinged about this serious problem, already?

Guys, this is a nightmare, isn't it possible to disable new users registration until some effective spambot countermeasures are taken?

im on this forum quite a bit most days of the week, i dont post much, coz i dont know much, even so i would really miss this place, but i cannot be arsed trying to look through this amount of bollocks spamming for decent threads as freemangordon said stop new users joining till this shite is sorted

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

Stop registration for some time, please. I guess for now it is the only way. BUT the bots probably already got a bunch of avatars, so, since the start of this crazy stuff, I guess all new avatars should be closed and asked for new verification mail (to sort real from bot, if possible).

Sorry if it sounds like nonsense, English is not my native language (despite the fact I am sure you got what I mean). I would love to argue with you some day, just not before the day this spam mess is sorted.

I'm not sure there was an argument to be had. You just sound very, very uptight right now. Maybe you just shouldn't be replying to or making a joke when you're head-down busy doing something with intent. At any rate, good luck with the spammer. I can at least agree that it's frustrating and obnoxious and I really wish they would eat sh*t and die already.

My theory is that the spammers are either:

A. Eflops flying monkeys.

B. Some MeeGo fanboys trying to drive us to meego.com.
