N900 Cant access the modem.
There are many other threads on this topic. Most of them are under the name of sim card failed etc where the user is experiencing a lack of cellular connectivity and a sim card with a bar through it. Sometimes this is just a problem with the sim card, in this case, the sim card is fine.
Here is some background on the bug: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10307 Now i'm here to discuss this and hopefuly find a solution. I am fairly tech savy so lets hope i can easily do anything that people suggest. I am also determined to fix my N900. This MAY be a hardware problem. It does seem to happen more in warmer situations. however, I have had my phone to pieces and all connections are good and heatsinks are clear and free of fluff. Here is a good quote from the bugtracking thread as to why i believe this is a software issue: Quote:
If i am on a call and start using other applications i get disconnected, however the modem reconnects very soon after. Code:
Sep 19 09:16:09 Nokia-N900 kernel: [ 2040.272857] ****** Code:
Sep 19 11:54:42 Nokia-N900 kernel: [ 7655.858032] ****** I will upload a full log dump when I get home. Please respond to my cry for help! |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
Hi. few days bak i faced the same issue.
Seems like nokia care ppl had forgotten to fix one of the screws. and this screw was from the antenna. So remove the back cover and check if all 6 screws are in place and tightly secured. If yes then there must me some loose connection or dust between the points on the antenna and the point on the main board. Also check if all the SIM connection pins in the sim card slot are at the same level. HTH |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
I bent the pins on the main board up last time I had the cover off to give me a better connection to the GSM antenna module (the one located on the far side from the camera) however the receiving contacts were quite worn. I lack the capabilities to re-plate them with gold but a small lump of lead based solder should let me guarantee that I am getting a good connection to the antenna.
I will let you know how I go. Was this issue giving you similar syslog errors? I think one of the issues here is that a wide range of problems will give you this very common error. I plan to keep going through them till I find the right one. |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
I never checked the sys log errors.
The SIM was detected at the time of booting. but sometimes i would get an error message "all telephony functions disabled". If i removed the bak cover and apply some pressure on the antenna at boot time this error would go. |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
Ok, fairly sure this is a case of same symptoms different problem.
I removed the cellular antena and booted the device. NO ERRORS! This is not actually surprising. The phone simply assumed that I had no signal, there is no difference to the modem if it sends a request and either a, there is no one to reply or b the request never made it. Obviously the modem doesn't check radiation impedance to make sure there is an antenna there, that would be mostly useless. Anyway, I reinsert the antenna with device still powered on. About 5 seconds later i have signal. Here is the syslog of this event: Code:
Sep 19 22:29:10 Nokia-N900 kernel: [ 258.118194] ****** Code:
Sep 19 22:40:11 Nokia-N900 wlancond[1157]: Low signal Code:
Sep 19 22:52:18 Nokia-N900 rtcom-call-ui[1507]: GLIB WARNING ** libebook - e_vcard_attribute_get_value called on multivalued attribute ADR |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
my usb had come out for the 15th time now :( .. so its bak at the repairs. i dont have warranty so gave it to a private technician.
hope it comes bak fit and fine. and hope it doesnt have the antenna problem... would try the syslogs once i have my phone back. AW wish u good luck with solving prob with your phone.. |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
As a side not, I am currently using the Global firmware. Could this cause an issue. The original location of my phone is not know, my friend brought it in Singapore about 2 years back.
Is it worth flashing other firmware to see if that fixes this issue? |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
You said you flashed the device but you never said if you flashed BOTH images, if you have checked the hardware for loose whatever and you have flashed BOTH images then you have 2 choices basically.
The global image is fine, it works same for everyone. If your not prepeared to take this to Nokia care then you will have to use a magnifier as a start and check for any dry joints, cracks or broken components. If all is ok then you must download the service manuals and you will need the right equipment to do all the tests that are all written in the service briefs. |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
It is good to hear that the global image is fine.
I have flashed both images. As for nokia care.. How much would that end up costing me in time, shipping and the plain cost of fixing it? More than the cost of a new phone? It would probably get close close. Also, It seems in this case they usually just replace the phone, meaning it is probably not worth fixing... You seem to think that this must be a hardware problem. I have read both service manuals for this device. I don't have the tools needed to debug the phone such as they use in the higher level service manual. Cracked solder joints are a possibility. I might well give the main board a run over with the heat gun tomorrow, see if that helps. I'm still looking out for anyone with any insights into this. Help me out here. |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
Did you solve your problem with the modem?
|
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
At the current time, no. Perhaps one day someone with more knowledge about maemo than me will figure it out or point me in the right direction but for now i am using another phone.

Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
hi!
Thanks for the reply.. There is one thing i didnt try.. Flashing just the CMT image.. with options --cmt-2nd=ARG : Location of CMT FIASCO 2nd image --cmt-algo=ARG : ocation of CMT FIASCO algorithm image --cmt-mcusw=ARG : Location of CMT FIASCO MCUSW image The arguments are not clear.. Do you think this might work.. |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
Sounds like you know more about it than me.
Might as well give it a try. |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
as i said i have only half knowledge.. can anyone suggest where i can get the CMT files..
|
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
They are all included in the "FIASCO" image, or rootfs by another name.
Nokia Care ended up replacing my phone that displayed these problems (I had similar if not identical messages in dmesg), so repair is probably expensive. In my case I could reliably trigger the issue by pinching phone with thumb and finger at the "h" on the keyboard, which made me decide to send it to Nokia under warranty. |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
For me, it wasn't software error. When I shaked the phone too hard, about 8-10 seconds after "SIM failure", "CMT reset,,," in logs, etc.
I decided to open the phone. I opened it to motherboard. On the side where battery is, there is cell module (when you remove battery, there is sim card holder and free space with some label, so cell module is behind it). So, I opened shield around cell module. There are 4 ICs under it. I made something like little springs, glued it to ICs, and closed shield. Shield distended a little. springs photo So, in conclusion, no sim failure after this. Before, if I keep phone in pocket and walk, failure was every 2 minutes. Problem was even if open slider too fast. I will write a post later with more photos. |

Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
What? Repair process?
Open N900, look manual. It's in Russian, you can find it in English I think. Or watch this. Do steps 1-13. Open GSM module shield with thin screwdriver (shield is not soldered, it is closed like box). Then glue some springs and close everything in reverse order. Some more photos covering my specific steps. |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
Proper way of repairing this is reballing, I think. Or frying motherboard by fan or in gas-stove (last is not proper :) ).
But I have no instruments/experience in this. |

Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
Wow, impressive.
I always blamed the contact points of the sim-holder for those telephony errors, but never thought of the chips themselves being the culprit. Good job, guys. |

Glad to help someone :)

Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
Holly Crap! That worked for me too! Here i used a pen spring, that was easy to cut (2 turns). THANKS A LOT!!!! The sign itīs perfect now (before that, if i put my hands in entire back part of the phone, the signal was lost. Now, not even a single line of the signal is lost :). Now to be back to life, my N900 only needs a original digitizer (the ebay one sucks a lot in touch screen) and the 2 screws that i broke :)
Best Regards, Germano. |

Just a mee too note. Now I have two fully functional n900s, I'll be using it until they come up with something better.

Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
Very interesting idea for a fix - which, BTW, support theory that reflowing would fix this issue permanently.
I think that it's first "real" solution, after not-entirely-real infamous hammering (literally) pins. I'll try to convince moderators to separate this thread since Forever's post, and make it sticky - after all, they could get some real work, and take little break from banning innocent people ;) /Estel |
Re: N900 Cant access the modem.
Actually, my phone is breaking again and again, maybe because I added too strong springs, maybe because I opened it too many times, so its body became wobbly (is this right word?).
So I bought another one on ebay, "new" (seems to be "almost" real new). But it has problem with wifi, when it's on and connected, it becomes warm and eats battery very fast. Does anybody know how to fix this? |

When I stripped the heads on a screw under the screen, I remember doing some research and I think I came up with M1.4x2.8 M1.4x5 as the two types used. It was over a year ago when I did the research, it might have come from one of the strip down pdfs. Anyway, I asked googled around and found a place that sold them, but because I only wanted a few, the guy sent me some as samples. (Unfortunately, the ones he had were M1.4x3, so slightly too long, but they did the job). |

I also glued springs on gsm modules, same way shown in snaps on my n900. And then flashed it again. But still same problem.
