Internet Communications Software Update!
Just announced on maemo-developers... http://lists.maemo.org/pipermail/mae...ly/010899.html
http://rtcomm.garage.maemo.org/ Looks like the start of some VERY nice stuff coming to 2007OS.. :D If only I could install it... argh. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
It seems like N800 is getting SIP support and bunch of other improvements to the stack.
|
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
These improvements are meant for Maemo 4.0 so this stuff is apparently very beta. It would be great to test it all out so that when it finally is a part of the official Nokia firmware, it will be nicely bugtested already.
|
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
I just tried it. Installed with no problem and configured with my two SIP accounts.
Tried some outgoing call and also incoming calls and it worked with no issues at all. The UI needs improvement, but I am confident it'll happen by the time it'll be released for the upcoming IT firmware update. I still have to try video between me and another n800 user. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
How were you able to get around the missing evolution-data-server dependancy?

I had no problem at all. Just went on the garage webpage with the tablet, clicked on the .install link and then went to the extras menu to complete the installation. Nothing more than following the instructions on the website. |

With this beta you can make video calls also with whatever SIP account you have. Of course it won't work between SIP and gTalk users, but only SIP-SIP or gTalk-gTalk. |

I can't give you any help, I am sorry. I don't know if I had that package already installed from some other program... |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Quick question: Is Meamo 4.0 intended for the N800? Or for -- yet another -- new model NIT?

Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
evolution-data-server 1.4.2.1.r554-3 dependancy error. can not install.
|
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
The screwed up thing is that THAT's the exact same version already installed on the tablet! (Checked with red pill mode.)
|
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
It can be that other versions are interferencing in the installation. Try only with the maemo repository and the repository that adds rtcomm. Deactivate other repositories.
I have it installed, and it works perfectly with voipbuster/voipstunt, etc. Free landline calls in the Internet Tablets (to some countries). Cheers. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Still didn't work. Oh well.
|
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
the required evolution-data-server version is the same version as in thenew firmware, but rtcomm say appliaction (eds 1.4.2.1.r554-3) is missing and can not install.
have install 1.4.2.1.r554-3 version from http://maemo.o-hand.com/packages/bora/, it is same. can not install. (using red pill) uninstall date, contact and task application of open-hand, can not install. mask all other repository, can not install. anybody can help? |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
I reflashed my tablet with the latest firmware (which is what was already on the tablet originally) and did not restore my backup. I immediately installed it and it appears to now be working.
|
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Oh yes... this new change is definitely the right way to go for Nokia. Finally, I can see people's display pictures and status messages from MSN through Jabber. The new contacts/new chat/new internet call stuff is much better in terms of UI as well.
The Speed Contacts home plugin looks really cool now with the added display pictures/user icons and status messages. I was able to use my Gizmo number with the new SIP stuff... no more running the Gizmo client for me! ;) |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Quim just posted this response to the maemo developers mailing list concerning the evolution data server package problem:

Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Other changes I have noticed... much bigger emoticons in the emoticon selection window making them much easier to pick with your finger or thumb. Added user names/status messages/display pictures on the left side of the screen in chat windows.
I'm loving this almost as much as I am loving the recent firmware upgrade. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Bah, I beat you to it by over an hour: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ead.php?t=7758 - but then my post's languishing all on its lonesome.

Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
"download failed"
Hope the beta repository it's in is sorted out tomorrow. |

evolution-data-server-dev_1.4.2.1-20070628_armel.deb Of course, one could always compile the source. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
rtcomm seems will conflict with open-hand's applications (contacts, dates, task) that uses evolution-data-server version 1.4.2.1.r554-3.
when rtcomm is installed, open-hand's applications will can not be installed and display eds application missing. when open-hand's applications are installed, rtcomm will not be installable. will wait the bug fixed release. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
I was loading appss for this and now Skype doesn't run -- its Splash screen comes up and then it closes. I'm trying to figure out what to uninstall, or whetther I need to reflash, wwhich I am loathe to do.
|
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
I want to figure out why I seem to have a different n800 than everyone else. I installed the app, followed instructions, rebooted registered my sip account and started testing calls, zero problems. Right now I have skype running with an iradio stream and the presence works perfectly. I think I am going to buy another n800 to use as as a home wifi phone now!
|
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
It works for me!
(At some point the different 'contacts' have to be fixed/merged and allow synchronization but this is a different conversation.) The after-effect is that the device get quite hot (but not dangerously) probably from the wi-fi module. Bravo to the guys that made it.. |

To those having problems ... this is pre-beta software that will destabilize your tablet and which means that removing it without completely destabilizing your tablet further will likely involve reflashing your device with the recent stable firmware. Lets not make Nokia regret giving the public exposure to early development by forcing them to field bogus support requests. Fill out an informative maemo bugzilla report instead. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Something's screwy with that repository....
"Remote end closed connection" errors in the app manager log. Completely unable to install this. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Does anyone have a recommended SIP provider other then sipphone.com ?
~~~~~~Ahhh I SEE!!! SipPhone.com is GizmoProject...... |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
[QUOTE=DryLand404;60498]Does anyone have a recommended SIP provider other then sipphone. ..../QUOTE]
Try 'Internetcalls'.(Same organiztion as voipbuster but you also get a free** Incoming number): http://www.internetcalls.com/en/index.html Once you have installed the client on your PC, you can then grab the SIP details here to input into the nokia: http://www.internetcalls.com/en/sipp.html I was able to receive calls on my n800 using my free United Kingdom IN number by configuring the secondary account on the Gizmo logon screen. I was however not able to make outgoing calls. I am hoping that it was a Gizmo issue and am now looking forward to testing it out on this exciting new software once I manage to dowload it :) EDIT - free**: I got my free UK number a while back. I have contacted Internetcalls to find out which countries have available numbers. Apparently you can only change your country of residence by reinstalling the software. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Heh. For those of you looking for free calls to a lot of countries, get Truphone on a compatible Nokia phone (N80i/N95) and then open up a hex editor to look at the truphone.set file sent via SMS t get your account login details and you're all set to use a Truphone account for FREE calls (with free incoming number) to just about any landline/SIP number on the planet.
But the repository is STILL kicking my N800 out ("connection refused") when I try to install it via the application manager so I can't install this SIP VoIP goodness. Would have been nice to use my N800 as a VoIP phone here at home, but I guess I'll still have to use my N95 for that a little while longer. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Wow...I am SO happy. I've been waiting ever since I bought the 770 to have a REAL SIP client. I could choke everyone who kept saying 'VOIP' when in fact it was only Google talk. So there was the Gizmo project. But in my opinion it still wasn't really VOIP.
So, now I have an N800. I got skype, but to me the same thing applied. I googled endlessly for SIP and N800 to no avail. And by chance I saw this tonight! After a quick install, a reboot and its running. Breathlessly I type in my log in to my asterisk box. Then I wait to see the little dot go red showing a connection. It does. Then I head for the dial plan, tap in the digits and press call..... And wow...omg...my cell phone is ringing!! It works!! I have a real SIP client now! I cannot express how happy I am about this! Thank you to all the developers and whoever helped make this happen. I am SO looking foward to this in the next release. And if there's anything I can do to help please PM me or post here. For those wondering I'm connecting to a asterisk box I built myself running asterisk 1.4 and piping out through a SIP trunk to the PSTN |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Wow. SIP at last. And with video support. Can't believe it - it's like christmas. (Well, most likely it *will* be christmas by then :D ...)
This could be the one reason that makes me want to buy a N800 even though its so "indoor" that I can't think of any practical use case so far... (Except, of course, they get SIP working in the hacker edition, too...) Only thing is that they say about SIP that "Video is not interoperable with other implementations"; I'm not sure if this is due to the early stage of development or if it will stay this way, but it would certainly be a pity if I couldn't make, say, Ekiga to N800 video calls. |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Anyways, the reason that the installer wasn't working for me earlier was because I had installed the OpenHanded PIM suite which installs evolution-data-server, which is now deprecated for evolution-data-server-addressbook and other components.
So far, I've only discovered one major bug with the new rtcomm and have filed a bug report on it. If you've installed rtcomm 1.0.1, please try to reproduce it and leave a message on the bug whether you were able to or not. https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1667 |
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
Nokia has since added a disclaimer on the rtcomm page pointing to bug 1667 saying it breaks the e-mail client, which isn't entirely true.
Re: Internet Communications Software Update!
