New (beta) Mozilla-based N800 Browser!

Linked from Ari's latest blog post is http://browser.garage.maemo.org/ which contains an install for a new Mozilla-based browser for the N800. It supports AJAX and plenty of other features, as you can see on the site.

This is a great step to replacing more and more of the closed source apps.

So... those of you that found sites that didn't work before, please give them a shot now and list them below.

Pownce now works perfectly fine... I can now post on it natively on the N800.

Re: New (beta) Mozilla-based N800 Browser!

Ok wow, I am impressed. Opera 8 was my biggest sticking point on the N800... it just wasn't up to date.

This is finally the direction Nokia needed to take... Finally a desktop browsing experience that Opera wasn't providing. I may hang onto my tablet after all. Flash 9 and Gecko 1.9.

works remarkably well!

I would just like a port of the VLC player and the embedded plug-in. In linux it works perfectly for watching WMV files

This just might be the reason to upgrade to the new firmware.

Is it just me or does flash seem just a little better?

For some reason, I can't start a new thread, so I'm hijacking this one. If there is any reason I have transgressed, please let me know!

Anyway, take a look at http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4423362. The Nokia 8600 Luna has a number of features I would like, in particular java support.

Re: New (beta) Mozilla-based N800 Browser!

Holy crap, talk about coming out of nowhere...first the RTCOMM beta and now this.
So far everything I've tried with Google just works.
Combine that with the recent RTCOMM beta SIP/VoIP development and Skype and my tablet can now be for Internet: Serious Business™.
Looks like the N800 is starting to take off.

Re: New (beta) Mozilla-based N800 Browser!

There's already an mplayer plugin for Firefox on Linux that works quite well. I can't wait to see it integrated. :)

Wow! Flash? I wasn't expecting that.

blackax 2007-07-17 16:48

Re: New (beta) Mozilla-based N800 Browser!

It sounds like we will have to re-compile all the extensions to work on the n800 but if that means mplayer then i think we can deal :)

I can't set the minimum fontsize, I can't remap the keys for better page scrolling, and there seem to be bugs.

Uninstalled the whole beta thing and Opera came back :)

Re: New (beta) Mozilla-based N800 Browser!

Just on a whim I tried entering "about:config" in the location bar (a trick familiar to Firefox users) and it works! At least you can't complain there aren't enough options...

Re: New (beta) Mozilla-based N800 Browser!

Using the Mozilla based browser, I can navigate further on Sirius.com than I could using Opera.

I can log in, and even choose a channel to listen to, but no sound.

Yes, I saw... but I'm far more interested in getting it integrated into the firmware instead of having another external app.

Nice work Nokia. Hope they release Modest email-client beta soon ( http://guadec.org/node/552 ).

Re: Mozilla-based Browser for the Nokia N800

Well, in about:config it lists the browser agent string as:

Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet browser 0.1.13 RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.26-8

So I guess some Firefox extensions/add-ons can be used?

Right now I'm trying to change the default text size and hardware nav button configuration.

Had a browser crash at youtube, so bad that even after the crash the CPU was used 100%. Had to kill the process. Youtube was slow too, much worse than with opera.

Then there were problems with scrolling using the "down" key. It scrolled a bit but then scrolled back to its original position, very strange and not on all sites.

Those bugs made me uninstall the new browser. I was quite happy with opera and my own private tweaks (up/down key as page up/down, minimum fontsize etc). Probably this can be established on the firefox too, but I'm just not patient enough to be a beta-tester :o

Had the browser crash a few times. Not sure why it did that though...but its still beta, so can't really complain.

Great effort!

I can understand that. Testing isn't something for everyone. I've been a tester for a long time. It's funny, I go to work and fix bugs with my company's games on certain phones (Nokia included) and then come home and file bugs for the N800. :P

Re: Mozilla-based Browser for the Nokia N800

Tip: To enable the "default browsing switcher menu", to be able to switch to Opera, close all instances of the web browser, and edit /home/user/.browser and make "hidden=true"

That way you don't have to uninstall it if you need Opera.

Re: Mozilla-based Browser for the Nokia N800

Getting further on the BBC clips online but not very http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo/noise/?id=rome

Same with other flash based sites such as http://www.cnettv.com

but Google Docs although a little slow worked quite well

and my ajax pages at http://www.protopage.com were certainly accessible.

Edit: change the quality to low and the BBC clips come through, choppy but....

WOW.
Texrat (& Mara when you joined in), people should have listened to you more. You said some things were coming, and you were exactly right. This is very nice & can only get better. I can only imagine the extent of what we'll get from Add-ons for this browser, and we've got the SIP client (well, w/out encryption so far) that people have been looking for. Digg (expanding/compressing comments) works properly now...I'm happy :D My one problem w/ this browser so far is that drop-down boxes and buttons display as black, but I'm sure that's because I'm using the LCARS theme.

Re: Mozilla-based Browser for the Nokia N800

BIG brownie points to the first person to:

A. repackage the Google Browser Sync Firefox plugin to work on this

OR

B. write a real easy how-to so that noobs like me can do it ourselves.

Halle-friggin'-luyah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can finally log in to my Wells Fargo account!!!!!! http://www.wellsfargo.com

I can't :) enough.

A few bugs though which I'll report:

1) entering text into web forms requires 2 clicks
2) when virtual keyboard pops up, web page scrollable area does not adjust
3) password text box did not show up on main Wells fargo login (had to go to secondary page)

Other than that, so far i'm ecstatic!!!!!! Thanks Zerojay and disq for proving that we CAN conduct information from official sources to this forum.

:D

I would agree with you, as I'm not having these problems on my current theme, Balaton.

Re: Mozilla-based Browser for the Nokia N800

Is it just me or is the vertical scroll bar a bit too far indented in the "normal
view". I can click at the very edge of the screen (not on scroll bar) and get the scroll bar to move. When I go full screen the scroll bar is where it should be though.
