Can't get VNC to work
Hello all!
Totally new to the game, only got my 770 yesterday! I really do like it, but part of the reason I got it was to use it to VNC on to our server here at work so I could have access while out and about troubleshooting. VNC is set up on the server and working away happily when connecting to them from a PC. It took me a while to find a vnc installation which would actually install on the 770, I think the one I got installed in the end was version 0.5. When I try to connect to the IP address or name of the server (or my pc, for that matter), I get an error message saying 'Could not connect to server'. I thought it might be a network problem so I assigned my 770 a static IP address, but no difference. Is there anything else I can try? Please keep instructions simple, as I'm a simple person :D I have no previous linux experience. Deirdre |
Re: Can't get VNC to work
Same here, and i have used vnc for a while on pc's!
any tips cheers |
Re: Can't get VNC to work
Did you do basic connectivity check (ping your pc from tablet)? I would also check incoming connections to your pc (netstat, or better tcpdump) Not every VNC server can work properly with maemo vnc client (http://maemo.org/downloads/product/vnc-viewer-bora), try to play with the VNC server settings (compression etc.). I succesfully tested with TightVNC 1.2.9 on Windows.

Re: Can't get VNC to work
Are you trying to connect to your VNC server within your local network, or over the Internet from outside?
If you are connecting on the same local network (perhaps to test it) make sure you are using the local IP address of your VNC server and not the (Internet) IP address of your router. Obvious I know, but it caught me out when I was first trying to set VNC up! |
Re: Can't get VNC to work
:) I can see how that would happen alright! No, using it on the same network, using the LAN ip address (and the local machine name).. No joy. Like nyleridedog, I'm well versed in using the pc version!

Re: Can't get VNC to work
I can confirm that UltaVNC server 1.0.2 on Windows works

Re: Can't get VNC to work
mfresh, tried that, no luck. Works from another PC alright, but not from the 770. Might I ask where you got the 770 software from?
Thanks! Quote:

Re: Can't get VNC to work
<red face> Sorry - I've lost the plot... I'm using an N800 not an N770. Sorry </red face>
I got the Viewer from vncviewer.garage.maemo.org/ Is this where you got it from It clearly has a picture of someone using the 770 version, so I assume it must be possible to get it to work on your machine. |
Re: Can't get VNC to work
I got it to work from a 770 to an XP Pro running a RealVNC server enterprise edition just over the LAN. But it certainly should work over the Internet too, I just haven't tried it.
Which version of VNC is your server? What IP number are you trying to connect to from your 770? It sounds like your 770 and PC are not even seeing each other, from the error message. Try ping like others suggested (but you'll have to turn on responds to pings on your router). Maybe it's a firewall issue...have you consulted with your work's sysadmin? PS I'm using the VNC client by Levinson, v 0.6 |
Re: Can't get VNC to work
At home now.. 'server' is xp pro laptop, no firewall. IP is 192.168.1.3 (lan). Don't know how to ping on it, tried typing ping 192.168.1.3 at xterm and as root, but it said the command wasn't recoginsed. RealVNC on laptop, client is link posted by mfresh. No point asking sysadmin at work, that's me, the one woman IT department :) Firewall shouldn't be an issue over the LAN, besides, works fine from pc.

Re: Can't get VNC to work
Hmmm, VNC viewer was the very 1st app I installed on my 770, and it looks (and works) just like every other VNC viewer I have ever used. It oughta work with anything you like...
Is it connecting? The first thing the 770 does apparently is link-up wirelessly with your Wi-Fi, then connects with the IP you gave it. The only thing I can suggest, assuming you have a good WiFi connection, is that the VNC port(s) are closed somewhere (5900 iirc is one). The maemo vnc viewer should work with any/all VNC servers you might have. You'll get it to work--it's a trip looking at one of my 1280x1024 desktops perfectly using the 770!!! p.s. I too am using 0.6 by levinson from the maemo download area--it was easy to install. |
Re: Can't get VNC to work
I'm running WinVNC (aka Ultr@VNC Win32 Server v1.0.0 RC 18) as my server on my Win XP Pro SP2 home PC. I'm using vncviewer 0.6 on my Nokia 770. When I put in the information for the VNC server on the 770, I have to use the format of "ipaddress:port", e.g. "192.168.1.3:1234". I have no issues running it from over the LAN nor over the internet using my cell phone provider. Good luck with it!

I now think from your error message your 770 is indeed connecting to your VNC server; it's the VNC server rejecting the 770 VNC client. I also use RealVNC server and I have set only certain IP numbers allowed, have you checked that? Sorry for the obvious question, but you are running RealVNC Server on the laptop? Not just the client? |
Re: Can't get VNC to work
Ping is included e.g in http://maemo.org/downloads/product/busybox and it works only under the root account, if I remember right. The very first thing is checking connectivity from 770 to the pc. In the aforementioned package there is also telnet, so you can try "telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx p" , where p is the vnc server port number. The connection must not be refused.

Re: Can't get VNC to work
Thanks for all the help, folks! Somehow got it working today.. deleted the pairing with the network, recreated it again with a static IP address and it worked. Can't explain why! Just happy that it did ;)

Re: Can't get VNC to work
Here a trick that I just discovered that helped me to connect with RealVNC 4.3.2 running on my pc. I was only unable to connect from my N800, other PC's I could connect from no problem. First I was so frustrated I tried a different version of VNC (tightvnc) and could connect fine. I was still determined to find out why I couldn't connect from the n800 to RealVNC, then in the options menu on the "Legacy" tab I found "Import VNC 3.3 settings". I gave it a try and now everything works!
I hope this is helpful to some of the rest of you! |
