lipstick - New extensible touch interface targetted at MeeGo CE

So, I'm aiming at using MeeGo CE on a day to day basis.. and I personally really hate the interactivity of that stupid launcher / switcher mode button, amongst many other things.

A while ago, I had a thought to re-imagine the desktop in QML, to allow for a lot more flexibility, and thanks to some help from Tom Swindell / alterego and input from a lot of other people, it's starting to take some shape.

Current status is at:

Current repo is at:
https://github.com/chive/lipstick

All the stuff you see on screen is QML (well, with possible exception of the applications themselves), and can be changed easily.

Hopefully, once this matures a bit more, the other CE folks will accept this as the new default UI, replacing the aeons-old ugly handset one. ;)

Definitely very interesting, and got intriguing name (unlike other ones we use to know about Meego ;) ). Keep that good work, I'm observing this with much attention.

Yes! Finally an improved UI for Meego on my N900! Thats one more step closer to using Meego on a daily basis..

EDIT: can this also be used as a replacement for hildon launcher and task switcher?

Not really, at least, not without some pretty huge changes to hildon-desktop. You could pretty easily write a UI that looked rather like Hildon's launcher and switcher, if you wanted.

I guess you missed the end of the video, where I ran it on an n900? :)

Yes, the intention is for it to be the new desktop for MeeGo CE when it's more "ready". So it'll run on n900s.

the above is the demonstration of the start of some WIP tinkering with a new feature - desktop widgets... something the Maemo community has wanted in MeeGo for a very long time

the blue and red rectangles are simple demo widgets, QML components...

Woah! Yes!
These are things I was really missing in Meego CE.
So, will this be a part of the new release of Mer?

it's already possible to use this on top of CE now (and I do on both my CE devices - ideapad / n900 already)

Widgets won't make '1.0', since I'd like to get it out there nice and early, but they'll come in the future I'm sure.

My intention is for it to become the new default UI on CE when I judge it is in a 'complete' state (which is not all that far off right now actually).

Mer itself doesn't have a UI, CE is using Mer to get something that boots. In traditional Linux desktop terms, CE is GNOME, Mer is Debian (except that Mer deliberately avoids having any UI at all by default ...) :)

Oh please can you make that into a separate application too?
Like, for running "desktops" as apps in Harmattan :)

I'm sorry, but probably not. I don't have any interest in developing for Harmattan as a platform, I'd rather make something better that's free, open source, and runs on more devices myself.
