How good/bad is the N9's Cellular/GPS/WiFi/BT reception?
I will preface his thread with a disclaimer that I know very little about cellular tech.
But I'm keen to debate & learn lots more. Some background reading to get this ball rolling... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UMTS_networks Blokes analysis of N9's antenna (cant fin orig. article yet, think it was telenor) http://translate.google.com/translat...ntenne&act=url *UPDATE* Changed the thread title in order to broaden the focus of this thread. We can now debate wireless performance/reliability for: Cellular/GPS/WiFi/BT. Not sure we should get into BT profiles though, mainly just reception quality/strength. |

How should I measure the Edge and 3g speeds for y'all?

Try reading that article, from others i have read it seems the n9's signal and voice quality is a notch above the rest |

How can it be that fast with EDGE??? That is crazy. |
Re: How good is the N9's cellular reception compared to others?
Its a katana EDGE.
Iunno. I thought it was fast. Might as well just use GSM network instead of Dual since it saves battery. No? |

Cool. Been using GSM all day and havent ever thought "this is slow".

Re: How good is the N9's cellular reception compared to others?
one observation, you were using it in dual mode and then edge. do you know if you were getting 3.5g with dual mode or if you dropped down to edge in dual mode?
i do admit for edge it's fast. and thanks to robby for that article, it was one i couldn't find again on the reception test. an overlooked advantage of having a good antenna and no metal casing etc to turn the signal into heat is that you save battery :) bad signal cause's your phone to boast the power to the antenna. if there isn't any loss through heat your saving on battery. also where other phones would drop to 2g you can still get 3g. Edit: for a test. get a gs2 if you can, and go somewhere that the reception is bad so the signal drops from 3g to 2g. then put the sim from the gs2 into the n9 and go to the same place. try get the same spot and hold the phone the same. not an exact science but will give you an idea of the signal quality and if there's many differences. also try speed tests in high with speedtest.net in high signal area's and low signal area's same sim. the gs2 has good hardware in it so it's a fair test. |
Re: How good is the N9's cellular reception compared to others?
It said 3.5g in dual mode throughout the ordeal at least on the phone.
Shame I sent my SGS2 to a chick up north on monday, or I totally would. Course, I could try with the N900, N8, N97, N70 or Supernova Slide. But... |

i can do that.

Re: How good is the N9's cellular reception compared to others?
^ Great work mate!
This'll become even more interesting as more people join-in with their N9's. And have other top-end phones like the SGSII to compare... |
Re: How good is the N9's cellular reception compared to others?
If I hadnt allready sent it away... :(
SGS2 with HSDPA+ is faster. Thats my recollection though, might be wrong. |
Re: How good is the N9's cellular reception compared to others?
No worries.... ^
I'm sure we'll get other folks with N9's soon that also have SGSII or other top-ends. Then this thread will get really interesting!! I was thinking of contacting the cellular techy from telenor, the one in the article linked to earlier. To see if he could add some more thoughts to this thread. |
Re: How good is the N9's cellular reception compared to others?
I don't have an SG2 (anymore), however i do have a ihpone 4. Maybe i could make a test with Iphone ios4.3 and ios5 and for the N9 the stock browser, fennec and opera?
How would you want such test? Indoor/outdoor locations? |
Re: How good is the N9's cellular reception compared to others?
Feel free to go crazy with whatever methodology you think is most realistic/practical.
I'm going to have to cull the threads I'm managing to just the 1st 2x in my sig. I may not even have time for them but fingers crossed... Later on if this thread's still going, I may consolidate it all into the OP etc. Good luck, I'm sure many people (me included) will be interested in your findings. Thanks! |
Re: How good is the N9's cellular/gps reception compared to others?
I have already posted this question about GPS reception on another thread, and even got a very quick and positive answer from Hihu, but as Jalyst pointed out, this thread might be more relevant for further discussions, so I quote myself here:

IIRC qgill commented on gps performance here too, last 3 pages

Re: How good is the N9's cellular/gps reception compared to others?
Im getting really good reception in san francisco on tmobile. 3-6mbs down, very good reception.
Also gps lock is almost instant. Note I am coming from a G2, and ofcourse it blows it away. |
Re: How good is the N9's cellular/gps reception compared to others?
I found that using 3G mode reduces reception, dual mode is better
|
Re: How good is the N9's cellular/gps reception compared to others?
I have very bad experience with my N9 signal reception . It happened to me many times of having to remove / put the SIM in the device to retrieve a signal . Some calls are very noisy . Having never know in the future if my connection will work or not is one of the most frustrating experiences moving anywhere. I don;t know if the problem come from my operator or from my N9 . I never have this problem with my other phones
|
Re: How good is the N9's cellular/gps reception compared to others?
Compared to HTC Desire I used to have it's the same. Sometimes I get worse reception than with Desire but sometimes it's a little bit better.
So in average it's the same, but the reception with N9 is more inconsistent. Edit: I didn't change the operator when buying new phone, so the change is most likely caused by the phone |

Re: How good is the N9's cellular/gps reception compared to others?
Gave the SatNav a spin yesterday and to be honest its a good job I knew where I was going... kept dropping GPS signal and even though it knew the route it kept recalculating.
Was OK on the way back but has left me a little concerned that it will let me down in my hour of need! Mobile signal has been poor compared to my old Moto Milestone also. |
Re: How good is the N9's cellular/gps reception compared to others?
any one have .deb of ftd for N9? ...I currently have c7 and x7 and also ftd installed in both phones so if ftd netmonitor app's .deb is available in public then I can test N9's signal strength capacity,edge/3g test etc in comparison with X7 and C7

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...71#post1126971 Weird thing is I recall reading a bunch of people commenting that GPS was very good for them (PR1.0). I wonder if it's to do with 1.1, have you updated to it? |
Re: How good/bad is the N9's Cellular/GPS/WiFi/BT reception?
I have noticed that when I hold the phone in landscape with both my hands to type, the phone sometimes loses the 3G signal and sometimes even gsm signal or just quickly goes down. This is even when the included case is on.
I leave it on dual mode as the phone holds the signal better than compared with only 3g mode. |
need your advice
HI,
I just bought my Nokia N9 yesterday the guy said its just a day used any how .. just like to know if the battery condition status under "SETTINGS/DEVICE" tab reads "Good" or any other thing .. shouldn't it be saying Excellent or Very GOOD for brand new phones ? i'm just curious pls help Thanks |
Re: How good/bad is the N9's Cellular/GPS/WiFi/BT reception?
@irfan18m: Good is the best u get for the battery ;)
I'm in Australia and m with 3 but got the phone outright. I got micro sim of 3 store as well but there are many occassions i get the signal bar like in the screenshot and also it says that sim rejected and cant make or take calls.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/29026266@N05/6464288665/ |
Re: How good/bad is the N9's Cellular/GPS/WiFi/BT reception?
If anyone else has some experiences, please share them...
It worrying that so many seem to be having problems with one or more of these four wireless techs. I've seen some people report great experiences, but far more have reported negative ones. Then again, I guess people only report when things aren't working as well as they expect/should. |

Just a tip; if you want the life of your battery to last longer, it's better to charge your phone more often, rather than wait until it's nearly empty |
Re: How good/bad is the N9's Cellular/GPS/WiFi/BT reception?
