Nokia N9-00: Share your Experience

Hi Friends,

If you guys own Nokia N9 and found any interesting feature or limitation, please share it here.

I have just bought one and still exploring... here are few findings:

1. Skype Video Call is not supported

2. I tried attaching 4-5 photos (2.5mb) and sending via hotmail, it worked unlike N8.

3. I am unable to find network IP Address, however you can add manual IP address to each network connection. [RESOLVED, THIS CAN BE DONE BY ENABLING DEVELOPER MODE AND CHOOSE SDK CONNECTION FROM APPLICATIONS]

4. I have registered hotmail & google under other mail account ( Accounts.-------->Add Account-------->other mail account), probably you can add as many as you want.

5. There are no themes available right now, only wallpaper. You can not change background wallpapers of all 3 screens. Wall papers only shows once you unlock the device by double tapping or by a right side button.

6. Currently 3 Feed for your home screen available, Facebook, Twitter & Associated Press (AP), may be more in future. I am wondering if I can add RSS to home screen. [RESOLVED-YOU CAN ADD AS MANY FEEDS AS YOU WANT]

7. There is no FM transmitter found in N9.[UPDATE: RUMORS.. THERE IS CHIP/TRANSMITTER IN N9 BUT NO SOFTWARE TO CONTROL-IN FACT NO NEED COZ N8 HAD VERY POOR QUALITY SOUND TRANSMISSION, USE WIRED/BLUETOOTH SOURCES]

8. You can clear feed (facebook, twitter, AP) by tapping and holding it - it gives you 2 options: CLEAR & SETTINGS.

9. You can synchronize your ovi contacts by going to Accounts>Nokia Accounts>Sync.... add the OVI account first.

10. You can transfer the Music via Nokia Link and it doesn't for Windows XP, only Vista & beyond.

11. Music Player doesn't have Equalizer or I couldn't find it. You can tap album art to play or pause.. or swipe away to change the Tracks... :D Sound is amazingly great.

12. You can not use the Music Player in Landscape mode, and most application doesn't work in landscape mode.

13. I had added hotmail under exchange account, it was not showing any content in inbox but the links only. I have moved it again under other email account.

14. N9 comes with a sleek and nice case, which fit like original case of mobile so therefore colors are not an issue, you can use Cyan, Magenta or Black for any of your device and it will completely camouflage it showing only the screen.

15. There is TV-Out option available under accessories but I don't have accessory... :) , don't know how to use it.

16. You can backup locally, I tried synchronized and it gives me all handsets near by, but no computer. I haven't don it.

Yet plenty to explore and hundreds to come..

Previously I had N8 and Now I have N9 64GB version and I am loving it.. :D , I have given up my iPhone. Go for it!

UPDATE:

17. You can not make playlist of your video files, each after each you have to select - You can not adjust the brightness etc.

18. You can not transfer the 4.56GB of 720p format data using Nokia Link under windows 7 64bit. Not sure about others...I initially tried transferring about 8GB single .mkv music videos file but it didn't work.

19. It doesn't play .vob files...surely!! it's not mentioned in specs :D

20. I have downloaded some .mp4 file from youtube... here is the link to video file: http://youtu.be/Xh6dGaLtDHI ... N9 didn't play  probably due to 1080p, however while downloading, I selected the format 720p - need to check it today.

21. I have tried copying music using windows Media Player and worked fine..it's more convenient. Just drag and drop the files you wish to copy and hit synchronization button in WMP.

I think Nokia needs to release a serious update & OVI Support.

Update:17/10/2011

22. Betalab Tech guy said, there is no plan to provide OVI Suit/Nokia Suit for N9 and it's not gonna happen in future. Use Nokia Link or Windows Media Player. :(

23. A Daily New Apps for N9 are updated here, worth to visit for N9 owners:

6. Yes you can. Can't remember how though.

15. You can use the Nokia N900 TV-Out cable.

Yes you can add RSS feeds. Open the feeds app, select the feed you want to be added en enable feeds for event screen. You have the choice for every feed, so not all feeds are visible with 1click (not bad, so you can ask for important ones on event screen, others in the app:))

Thanks Hakki_01, I have managed to add RSS but due to some reasons, it is not shown at home screen. I have restarted the mobile as well. Will keep on trying.

You have to wait until there are new items in the RSS feed. Existing items won't be displayed.

when i add a calendar entry, it puts it on the day after i've selected (select a day, select add event, the date for the event is the day after i selected... seems odd).
anybody else with the same problem?

also for any Aussie's out there, there is an issue with crazy john's and the n9 (you can choose between the ability to make calls or the ability to connect to data, definitely network issue on Crazy John's side), they say they are talking to nokia to sort it out. hopefully they do sort it out soon, i want my data connection.

EDIT: crazy john's issue now fixed

There is a size limit if you are using Nokia Messaging (a.k.a accept the TOS) for email. Add your email account manually and decline the TOS and you can fire away all your hearts desire of attachments (also depends on your email service).

edit: The above is for the N8, or any other S^3 device.

I got my N9 yesterday and haven't been able to access the internet (except for wifi) at all. :( Crazy John's say it could take about a week to sort it out..

Any other service providers having difficulties?

Otherwise, I'm loving the phone. Although I would like more customization as far as the home screens go, the user experience the phone offers makes up for it IMO.

My one main gripe (apart from the internet problems) is how to answer calls - Nokia have yet again made things more difficult. To answer an incoming call, you have to make TWO touches - one to unlock the screen, then another to actually answer it. It should only be one touch.

Also, initially you can't delete music files from the phone (had to connect to PC) but after installing a file manager from the Ovi Store, this can be done. It's strange because Nokia phones have ALWAYS had this functionality.

Music and videos look great.

Hello.. I am from Middle East (United Arab Emirates), I bought the device from Nokia Store unlocked. There is no option to view network IP address from within the mobile....

Hi... you are absolutely correct. Two touching is a bit annoying but it's responsive unlike N8. Moreover, swiping down to close an application should take you to main screen or application screen... not to open applications windows - or it should be on user's chose to choose it while enabling "swipe to close application".

what is the max size of video did you tried to transfer? i tried to transfer Cars2 movie of 4.56GB and it didn't worked with me.. even while copying paste, windows said it is not allowed by phone.

"2. I tried attaching 4-5 photos (2.5mb) and sending via hotmail, it worked unlike N8."

How about batch select and upload pictures to Flickr?

N900 would allow you to a whole batch at once and then upload it in the background.
Just asking as this a some people a Nokia must have closed a deal with Pixelpipe depriving the N8 (THE camera phone) from this great built in feature.

If you have developer mode enabled and installed terminal, type in“ ip addr”. that should give you the ip.

nokia should make answer call on swipe up, mute call on swipe from sides, and reject on swipe from the top. imo. or any variety of those. maybe swipe up to simply inlocl, swipe from right to answer, from left to reject, and from top to silence.

yes, undoubtedly it's beautifully crafted and lovely hardware... i am still waiting a lot of updates coming from Nokia to cover the loopholes in the initial release, in fact not loopholes but to further improve it.... I mean people in my office visit me to see the device only.

Re: Nokia N9-00: Share your Experience

Thought I'd share this in case someone else gets the same:

Camera-ui crashed when I played around sliding with lockscreen (started it accidentally with down-up slide and chose the camera). It stuck on 90-100% cpu usage, but this was not visible anywhere else but top/htop. Couldn't kill it as devel-su does not have privileges for that, so I had to reboot.

That with the Exchange syncing bug was a first one in two days, so I'm generally happy. Otherwise N9 is a mixed bag compared to N900. Everything is sleeker, but more restricted at the same time, lacking options. Fast and smooth. Swipe UI feels natural.

I definitely miss HW-keyboard and full landscape environment (with portrait too) from N900. Browser seems smooth and fine but it does not have full screen mode. Url-bar is always visible, which feels waste of screen real estate.

I adore the physical aspects of the phone. It is absolutely gorgeous and feels very good to handle.

AMOLED screen is controversial too; having got used to sharp LCD screen in N900, amoled looks fuzzy when reading small text. There are plus sides to that technology too, of course, so one just have to get used to it.

Re: Nokia N9-00: Share your Experience

5 days i have had the N9 in use i have enjoyed using it a lot. Have been stopped 3 times already by people wanting to test the N9 out as i got the phone some days before the Finnish release. :D

I actually got exactly the same feel i had when i got myself ipod touch 1G(my first experience with iOS).
I have never liked the people that Apple seems to gather around it and some decisions they make, but in deep down i really don't always care about the "power user needs this and that" mentality that work against Apple. Even when Apple puts you to use certain service or the UI element, while i would want to do it"manually", as a whole the Apple way sometimes works better after actually using it..... iTunes is still sh1t. :p

Feel same way about N9... Nokia Link is sh1t too actually. ;)

I see that is like n900, but this time we have only portrait, and one thing about fm transmitter - n9 has it on its motherboard (bluetooth chip) but it's not supported by software, kind like fm radio in n900

I have none of those issues.

Except maybe the email one, not really sure about that. Might be a feature though, if you allready have an unread email its going to show up on your feedscreen anyways, just updates to show number. So you get a notification that you have unread email, which would promt you to notice that in general use and also on the lock screen.

Thank you for your feedback too, I hope there is a way which we can change the setting or tweak some files so that we will get alert notification for every email that being 'pushed' in.

I send back my n9 to Harvey Norman and the tech guy said they will take max 5 weeks to repair the phone. :( very saddening that I paid 698 for using a defected phone for 2 days, a piece of paper and 5 weeks of waiting.. :(

The mass storage drive is a FAT32 partition!
So the maximum file size is 4GB!
It's not Nokia's fault. Microsoft created this limitation:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc938937.aspx

But we should always reencode our movies. So not that big deal.
More important for me is, are we finally able to multitask while watching a movie or are the file again paused until we returned to the player? (very annoying)

3.- Missing pdf reader

but
* I have 64Gb version, with 54Gb of music and it works very well.
* Battery live 1 day
* it have MMS! I've just forgot after 2 years with N900
