Audio volume and vibration very low on nokia n9

Hello
At full power the ringer volume is very low.
When it vibrates at very low vibration.
An idea?

Re: Audio volume and vibration very low on nokia n9

I know, it's really irritating. One thing about Nokia phones is that first and foremost they should be good PHONES. In my view the low volume of the ring (and vibration) on the N9 breaks that rule. It makes it a bad phone. I miss calls and messages regularly because of this.

One consolation is that as far as we know, the speaker itself is capable of higher volumes, but the ringer is set artificially low. There may be a settings somewhere that can increase it, at the risk of it sounding 'vibration-y'. Also a firmware update may improve things, we have to see.

I have found a temp solution for the ringer volume.
go into terminal as root
devel-su
password: rootme
then type alsamixer

keep pressing right until you see PreDriv.
press 'k' to increase to 100, press 'j' to decrease.
press 'ESC' to quit.

This increases the ringer volume by quite a bit, although it is slightly distorted. Still better than missing calls!!!!

Apparently upon reset alsamixer resets itself so some script is needed to adjust this on startup. If anyone can help with that it would be awesome!

Might be one to add to almehdi's universal script
http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=4991
Not sure if it sets any start-up scripts yet, but it should be possible to do that via it.

i had the same problem but now is goos..try this...when you are on the screen where you choose the music press the volume bottom until the highest possible....usually is less than the middle that's why the ring volume is slow...

Thanks much Rexii:), N9 loudspeaker is much better now, strangely enough, I had no up and down key on my terminal, had to navigate using "n" on the keyboard:eek:

@Dabbu101 i had the same problem but found a solution. On the top right corner there is a grey dashed button, click on it, in the new windows on Toolbar click and select arrows instead of shell. Then you can use the right/left arrows and it work!

Re: Audio volume and vibration very low on nokia n9

We could surely use a stronger vibra, no doubt about it. Maybe some software update will fix that. I doubt N9's vibra is so weak. It's prolly just set to be so.

I had a look at the Alsamixer, but mine was already at 100 ! Done through the normal settings.

Re: Audio volume and vibration very low on nokia n9

Settings >>> Sound & Vibration >>> System sounds, I set this to level 3 so i assume that the max level for system sounds also means that the ringtone is at max. A ringtone being a 'special' system sound perhaps ?

There are plenty of ringtones that I find too loud, even though my hearing is far from perfect.

Re: Audio volume and vibration very low on nokia n9

I have noticed my N9 have different volume of changed ~2 weeks ago - it was somehow low, but currently it is just perfect, and even I have to keep not to the max to be in tune with my preferences.
I think I got the moment when this change occurred - the phone was close to me, running out of battery juice, in power saver mode, then a sms, followed be email came but the notification sounds the phone made were somehow awkward and distorted, lasted longer then they should. After that when I charged the phone overnight the first call received next day - the sound was very loud and I was surprised. So was the next and so on. From that day I had to move the ringing volume down to notches from max.
I know this sounds a little crazy, but I think - can some changes occur to pulseaudio? O ALSA?
I have experienced such changes 1-2 times before, after phone reboot I have loud and clear sound, until the next reboot pushes it back to quiet again.
Anybody with similar observations?

I too had this problem till I went to the =>settings => Sounds and Vibration then using the volume buttons on the side of the case I found that this adjusted the ringer/message volume and increased the vibration intensity.

Took me bloody ages to work this out

^I will add this to the guide.

Can alsamixer be used to increase the volume of the earpiece too?

I find it to be pretty low even at the indicated full volume.

Re: Audio volume and vibration very low on nokia n9

I'd advice not to use this Alsamixer, one developer mentioned a risk of changing default settings, sound also gets distorted when activated. Not a reliable solution at all.

That doesn't work....

I got to the sounds and vibrations and pushing the volume buttons changed the profile from silent to beep to ringer, they didn't change the vibration level.

Volume for videos & music are in purple.
Ringtones in blue. Click on the "Ringing" it will appear. You can either slide it with your finger or use the buttons at the side.

Vibration, Touchscreen Vibration can be changed up to level 3 max. I find the vibration strong, can feel it in my pocket everytime an update or sms,etc comes. ;)
Ringtone depends on the tune used, I dont put it on max anyway, use vibrate more. I also have the "Dolby Sound" enabled for both music & video.

I'm not talking about touch screen vibrations, I am talking about vibration for incoming calls, sms, and emails. Am I missing something here?

It could just be me, but vibration is stronger at Level 3, not a big difference but a difference.

Under "Vibration Profile", are the blue boxes enabled? If not, no vibration

Yes, I thought this was mandatory for vibration via calls and sms.

Call and sms vibration was not stronger via increasing touch screen vibration to level 3. I think it's just you. Though it could be hopeful thinking on my behalf that it's not just you.

I noticed that if under 'Silent' mode, Vibration is not enabled. I had to slide it over to enable it

buzzzzzzzzzzz
well I have solution if u all wanna try it. :)
i promise the predrive volume will be always to 100% even after a call and plugin and plugout of ear or headphones and even after reboot of ur nokia N9. 1st u have to remove tweak s : 4 for changing predrive volume to 100% after reboot from N9QT
the methods are: goto this path "/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths" in ur phone root without the quote and select 'nokia-dfl61-twl4030-output-ihfandheadset.conf and nokia-dfl61-twl4030-output-headset-call.conf and nokia-dfl61-twl4030-output-ihf.conf'-this three files.
copy down all three files into your system and open it using any editor (eg c-free 5.0 "in case of mine")

and edit the line with [Element PreDriv]
volume = 2' for all three files

change volume = (2 to 3) for all three file and Yo except value 3 1 n 2 if u input else (100, 20 any value the u have to rum n9 terminal every after each boot up to fix alsamixer predrive to 100% manually ;)
coz in the Element PreDriv
volume = 0(means 0 u know it logical)
volume = 1(means 33% not 10 or else)
volume = 2(means 67% default) and volume = 3(is 100%.. ;)
u don't believe ya am sure u ain't check urself try it..frns.. ;)
"DONNOT CHANGE ANY OTHER VALUES OR ELSE WILL end up with no sound if mistaken ;)"
after making change save the file as it is no further change if u wanna get irritate with ur n9 then change more value as ur wish.. :)
now the real things.. how to feed this values into the phone root files..
??? any clue.. :)
use 'filebox root' from N9qt of u can run terminal command if u know how to run copy n replace command in terminal.. (yea every1 knows :) kidding:P)
"if u get ur phone with NO sound then its not my fault. coz all u did is error in the file editing am not responsible for any.."
