Official Nokia N800 Case
The official Nokia N800 Case is now showing on Expansys UK with a 10 day estimate at £24.95.
This is an update from the previous "discontinued" status, so it looks like things are moving in the right direction at last! |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
To bad for them I just found a solution for mine :)

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Can anyone here who has actually used the official case comment on it?

I'm waiting for confirmation from Expansys that they really, really will have it in stock this time in which case I'll order one. |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Thanks for the info. Wonder when us Yanks will see it here?

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
I have no comment on the "genuine" N800 case, but I bought this case (http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=105191) several months ago at Expansys. It was recommended by user cstross, was (and is) almost criminally cheap and comes with an extra pouch for a -- small -- cellphone (very small: my P910 won't fit).
It's a loose fit, but snug enough, and at the time I had all kinds of ideas to make it into a semi-permanent case, but in the end all I did was remove the velcro and replace it with a magnetic clip (friendly warning: If you plan to do this, remember to either always put your N800 in with the screen away from the clip, or add padding on the front inside). At the moment I'm using the small pouch to keep my headphones in. In fact, it is so cheap that I have it marked on my shopping list for Expansys: Next time I order something, I'll buy a spare -- or two: I've still not given up completely on my DIY ideas for that case. |

I started this thread because "unofficial" cases already had their own (and very long) thread. :)

$43 seems awfully steep compared to other products released ...

What I don't get are the extra magnets, supposedly to attach the N800 to a fridge. Now, I don't know how people use fridges in Finland (probably not that much, seeing as how they have a landscape-sized fridge outdoors), but over here no magnet is capable of staying on the fridge for more than a couple of days. I'd really really really not trust my N800 hanging there... But point taken: I shan't mention alternative cases, like this one: http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=105191, any more.:D |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
You've got to be kidding me, $43.95 US ?? :(

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Mil or anyone as I referred to in an earlier post when we first got the new updated firmware the Tableteer Applet Icon (that shows up on your IT desktop if you use it) I swear showed to me what appeared to be a HARD COVER for the N800 did it not ? The link never did work as it always gave a 404, (and now is mysteriously gone as well) but I swear it looked to be a hard cover, I mean the icon was small so you couldn't get a great look at it and as I said before as the link was broken unfortunately.., now that I might, maybe pay $43.95 for, maybe..

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
After waiting for "Availability" to change to today (it was "Available in 1 day", yesterday) the availablity has now jumped to 31 August...
I have visions of this turning in to the same farce as last time where it will end up "Discontinued" due to Nokia not providing any stock. :( |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
The cover is turning out to be the most anticipated vaporware since Thor-CD.

but Our Price: $43.95 Availability: Due Sunday 2nd September at http://www.mobileplanet.com/d.aspx?i=144920 is going to make me wait until I decide. $44 for a case is a lot. Especially as I have lasted 6 months with out it LOL |

Is that in the stylish black or the attractive red?

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
I've checked this model number and confirmed it is a Nokia product number and not an OEM.
I just ordered mine from buy.com .. thanks for the heads up! I'm in London on business for a couple of days and was going to see if I could find it tomorrow even though the exchange rate sucks! No need now! Regards, David Quote:

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Actually there is no buy.com image at all - I found a few examples (all the same) on the web by Googling for "Nokia SU-31" and mistakenly attributed one of the images to buy.com. None of the images look like the Nokia case on expansys or the Nokia UK web site... it will be interesting to see what buy.com are offering if anyone goes ahead with a purchase. :)

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
With free shipping I did order one. Worse case, I pay $4 to return it to them. I had checked with two other resellers who confirmed that the product is sold by Nokia and is not an 3rd party product. We'll know in time and I'll report back.

RECEIVED - Official Nokia N800 Case SU-31
I have now received the SU-31 from buy.com and can report that it is an official manufacturer release product. It is 'just a flip cover that has an imbedded magnet that firmly connects with a magnet under the front bottom faceplate of the device. There is a glue on magnet that adheres to the back cover of the N800 and then connects with an imbedded magnet on the back of the SU-31.
There are two additional large magnets that come with it so that you can adhere them to other surfaces (fridge as suggested in the document that comes with the SU-31). I have to say, after purchasing the Boxwave leather case and finding the fit / finish to be sub-par, and having the Boxwave case make using the hardware buttons with the tips of your fingers difficult, I think that this sort of cover is the only real solution. I'm happy to take some photos if anyone is interested. Let me know. I have also ordered the Flexiskin from Boxwave and expect to have it early next week for comparison purposes. Regards, David |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
yes please to the photo offer! I want to see how it attaches and some side shots to see the thickness increase etc.
|
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Yes could you please post some pictures of the case. Do you feel the cover provides sufficient protection if one would put the N800 in a backpack or bag with other items? Thanks for the info.

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Thirded for photos! :)
Amazingly Expansys UK is now showing 1 September again... it seems to yo-yo between that date and 31 August - argh. |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Photos will be helpful. How good is the glue/magnet for keeping the cover in place ? Will it last ? I wouldnt want it to come off in a few weeks, esp. when it costs $40.

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
if its protective as the 770's cover then I'm gonna start wishing I had an n800 :)

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
EEK! I don't want to start gluing things to my N800!
Pass! I have one like this for a Nintendo DS, and it works like a charm... $9 target. N800 fits snug, and I can fit it in my pocket. Plus I use the mesh zipper pouch on the side as my wallet for the time being. http://i23.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/99/5c/cd1e_1.JPG http://i4.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/99/5c/ca69_1.JPG |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Wow, you sound as if you think the gluing causes major disruption to the device. As my posted pictures will show, it is a very thin metal strip that is glued with provided adhesive to the back of the N800. After peeling off the tape strip and putting it into place, the instructions suggest giving it 12 hours before adding the magnetic case cover so that it cures properly.
I've now had it sitting since this Friday afternoon and it seems very strong. The strip is so thin that if you ever wanted to throw it in the pouch the N800 came with or put another case around it you could without any thickness issues. The case photos you show seem to be very clumsy for a device you should be able to grab and use quickly. I think this Nokia magnetic approach is better than a pouch or wrap around case such as the Boxwave, which tend to get in the way of the hardware buttons. Quote:

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Here are links to both the Boxwave Designio Leather Case and the Nokia SU-31 case. The Boxwave photos show bad fit and thickness of permanent case that makes use of the hardware buttons difficult.
Nokia SU-31 Boxwave Designio Leather Case I have the Boxwave rubberized Flexiskin coming in next week. I'll post those pictures when I receive it. |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Sorry, but with the magnet, it just looks like a hideous add on. What they should have done was ship the official case with a new battery cover that has the magnet built-in. Now that would be sweet!
