What are things to check for a 2nd hand Nokia N900?

As I mentioned in this thread, I am buying a Nokia N900 sometime in November, which is about to end. Actually, within the week, I hopefully be able to have enough money to buy this mobile computer. But as the title of this thread says, I am buying a 2nd hand Nokia N900. I want to ask what are the things to check for a 2nd hand Nokia N900 before really calling the deal and paying the 2nd hand device? Like would the sliding of the keyboard should be too loose? Or will faded keyboard or pressing of keyboard should be crisp? And stuff like what are the more important things to consider?

Thank you in advance :)

PS: I plan to buy another or even two when time and money allows it - hopefully :D

Make sure you get the right lock code, I've also heard some won't recognize sim cards. USB port shouldn't be lose or fallen off already.

This thread should be stickied, there also was another one with some useful advice, search for it.

cosmetic condition is largely your preference.. it will help you learn the keys if they arent all rubbed away of course.

if youre examining the device physically in person, check the usb port isnt loose, the camera shutter slide works as it should and also check whether the phone crashes if you remove the back cover/memory card while it is running- I dropped my last n900 and the 32gb flash memory chip inside broke off the motherboard, so i remapped the microsd memory card to be the same function, but skype/other im never worked properly again.. the rest of the phone ran fine and worked normally but removing the back crashed it, so this would be a good way to check if this rare loose-flassh-memory problem has manifest in your purchase

some phones have white spots in the screen where some components behind the image get too hot.. it may not bother you

I am not sure what search string to search for it... Would it be alright to ask what should I start searching or something?

If this will be stickied, I might as well edit the first post :)

check the usb port of his n900 if not loose..try to plug in the pc if it detects the phone..look for scratch..screen, lcd. try the camera. the wifi and charge if it will charge..open hardware keybord. try any key if its working..check also if the slider is loos or not. thats all :D

check one thing that i noticed when i was in search for a 2nd hand N900. insert your sim card and see whether it starts with it or without it and restart it 2 or 3 times to check this as the device which i came across was having the same issue. it picked my sim 1st time but when i restarted it, it didn't started with my sim card.

sorry, I didn't mean to sound ugly, I was just in a hurry and typing on the phone so didn't have enough time to search for it, I just thought it would be useful to give the info that I remembered a similar thread. Anyway, glad you found it.

Yay! That was my thousandth post :)

kohrime: Also you may want to consider reading this in a bid to prevent getting a fake N900.

I would also check underneath the battery cover to see if there are screws missing and/or they have silver colouring in them as those indicate that the device has been opened before.

If you have time to test it at the shop, just go through
Code:

dmesg
and see if there's anything that you think might be an issue. Also
Code:

cat /proc/mtd{1,2,3}| strings| more
may have some useful information in terms of device's history.

Re: What are things to check for a 2nd hand Nokia N900?

Things off the top of my head: -
1. It isn't locked with an unknown lock code
2. It isn't SIM locked to any network - try your SIM in it
3. It charges when you plug in the USB charger
4. Switch it fully off and see if you can switch it on again (check for boot bugs)
5. Check screen calibration and vibration
6. Check to ensure you can switch on bluetooth and the FM radio
7. Play some music and see if the volume keys work
8. Check if the headphone socket works.
9. Use the camera to take a picture, ensure you can view it afterwards
10. repeat above for video
11. Switch the GPS on and see if you can get a lock
12. Open a command shell or text editor and see if all the keys work
13. Make a call to see if the phone works, and that the other person can hear you!
14. Check the WiFi works.
15. See if the screen auto-dims when you cover the sensor
16. If possible, check the notification light works for received call/text

I think that's most of the hardware checked out... any software issues should be solvable with a full reflash....
