N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

I successfully configured a sip account that uses my googlevoice account for incoming and outgoing calling.

I used a free service from sipbri.com to do this.

I can make and receive calls on my N9 using GoogleVoice just like a cellular call. The quality on my N9 end is perfect.

The voice quality at the other end is not that great.

Anybody else successfully used GoogleVoice with N9? Any other provider that may give better voice quality?

This is important because T-Mobile (US) service at my office is not that great and I want to pick up the call on wireless. T-Mobile Android phones provide Wifi-calling, but N9 does not.

I configured to forward to GoogleVoice number when I am not available and it works great. It is really great if we can resolve the quality issue.

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

I use simonics to configure my Google Voice accounts and the voice quality for both incoming and outgoing is great over HSDPA/WiFi

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Thanks!

I've been wanting a free sip account.

I'll sign up for both later tonight. :)

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

So do I just sign up for Simonics on this site, BlinkThinks?
https://simonics.com/gvgw/

http://sipbri.com/
is not accepting any new accounts.

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

@Addison, yes :)

Addison 2011-12-03 03:21

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

So it's a good service there, no scam, and it's also free? :)

BlinkThinks 2011-12-03 03:40

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

It's free. No scam so far with my 2 tested GV accounts, I have yet to enrol my other GV accounts... It would basically create your SIP username and password....

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Thank you! Thank you!

I'll sign up right now. :)

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

If you set up everything correctly you will be automatically signed in. And your 'Availability' should include SIP as 'online'

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Okay.

I'll give this a try.

I'm using an old N800 though but hopefully the setup will be close to this. :)

Thanks.

I'm much too drunk to try it right now, but I'll post back tomorrow if I can ever become conscious again. :)

I have no idea what the word Kampai means, but I still respect you. :)

Anyone can help me set this up for N8 too ? There are some settings in N8 that are not present in N9.

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Thanks BlinkThinks. I did not get a chance to get it setup until Yesterday and I tested it pretty much all day.

simonic.com is working with good quality. They say it is free during testing.

Now the big question is if Google going to continue Voice free after 2011.

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

For N8XX I found keeping transport to auto works. What I am having problems with is incoming calls, sometimes it works other times no go.

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

How do you have this set up with Dial Central Heavy?

I can make an outgoing call using the Internet Call app but not with Dial Central.

I don't know what I need to use as my callback number in DC.

You have to find a sip provider that will assign you a phone #... Good luck. I have sipgate.com but I am told they don have anymore numbers.

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

The service you told me about works very well in making calls just not solid in receiving them, hit or miss

Addison 2011-12-04 01:05

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Okay. Thanks.

Yeah, they don't give you a number like Gizmo did so I didn't know what to enter for the callback number in Dial Central.

Addison 2011-12-04 01:12

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

So with this SIP account, there's really no reason to use Dial Central?

Just use it with the standard Internet Call app?

So I followed this and it told me can't connect to sip... Any idea what to do?

Same thing happened to me, but I'm using a N800.

I just went back over every step he wrote and now it's working.

I'm not sure why it didn't take the first time.

Yes that is right. I wish it was as solid in receiving calls as DC.

But DC will not work for notifications. So still looking for one app that can do both all the time (DC was able to fill that need but something has gone bad).

Tried it 4 times now following his instructions to a T on the N9... what do I put for the keep-alive mechanism?

I know if it will work on wifi i can get it to work on 3g...

I made my first phone call and it sounded great. :)

Works now... if you get can't connect to sip that means all of your fields are right, just the person I call can barely hear me, as well as everything I say is repeated back to me... Guess it's not perfect yet...

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

I email the people at simonics hoping to find a fix to the unreliable incoming calls and they responded with this info;

Quote:

I don't have any experience with the N810 (or any Nokia phone).

If you have a place for specifying the registration timeout, it is set
at 1200 seconds max on the gateway. If your registration times out,
the gateway won't be able to send calls to you. Most devices/user
agents won't have to set this. It is usually automatic (determined
from the server during the registration process).

I tested my own number on the gateway and received the call
successfully several times in a row just now.

Also verify that in Google Voice you only have the Google Chat option
selected for receiving calls. If you have more than one option
selected (e.g. Google Chat and your cell phone) it will not connect
reliably.

Good luck,
Bill Simon

Thanks for writing them Heavy. :)

So Heavy, with that email, are there any tweaks needed that BlinkThinks wrote to get better results with this?

On the N9 from the UI for setting up the SIP account, not much can be changed.

BlinkThinks 2011-12-04 05:27

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

it all depends on your connection AND QOS (wifi only; router dependent). In my case the call quality is great. I'm using a Tomato flashed E4200/E3000 router. On 3G its a bit choppy at times but most of the times its great.

Yeah, what Heavy posted is correct, especially the one about google chat, which I failed to add - but I was hoping that you guys read the instructions, they're all there as soon as you signed-up :)

Too bad there is not much option in the N9 as well as my Nokia E-series phone where we can set the timeout. Generally, the settings provided by simonics is ideal for Asterix or any VOIP gateway - I'm using a SPA3102-NA, which works perfect.

I'm glad the settings worked for you guys :)

Addison 2011-12-04 05:30

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

^ Yeah it works great on my end as well.

If you never posted here I doubt I would have ever found this. :)

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Addison, I'm just afraid that Google Voice may soon charge their service. AFAIK their free service will end soon....

Addison 2011-12-04 05:37

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Why? What have you heard?

BlinkThinks 2011-12-04 05:41

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Well last year, GV said they're extending their free service until 2011... It's actually all over VOIP forums (and google) but hey, I may be wrong ;)
