[Solved]Change n9 product code?

Hey there!

I'm having quite some problems with updating my Nokia N9 to the latest firmware and now i'm wondering, is there a way to change the N9 product code? It would be a simple solution. It's easy to do it on Symbian, so it should be possible on maemo/meego too, right?

Thanks for all the replies.

edit*

Here is the solution:

You can do it with NSS (Nemesis Service Suite), google for download link, after you download it install the first option (USB something), connect your n9 [sync and connect], open NSS, scan for a new device, select "phone info" and then click "read" and you'll be able to see what's your product code. Now you must change the power mode to local and your phone will reboot in local mode, tick enable the product code and write a new product code in the field and press "write". That's about it, set power mode to normal again and press "read" to see if it worked.

Well, if you mean product code, as in RM-696, then no, you cannot change it. However if you meant the one on your sim card tray, all you need to do is flash your firmware with a different variant code.

Re: Change n9 product code?

Yes, I mean the one on my sim card tray but I can't flash my firmware with a different variant because it says downgrade disallowed. If i could just change the product code then (i guess) i would be able to update my device via NSU or OTA. Is there any other way?

Re: Change n9 product code?

NSS doesn't work on the N9, you may have to wait for PR1.2 to flash to a lower PR number (i.e. PR_001).

Re: Change n9 product code?

I also had trouble upgrading my firmware. I used NaviFirm and used the generic Firmware. Working like a charm.

Well that's a shame. Thanks for the info anyway.

Re: Change n9 product code?

Use Navifirm (www.symbian-toys.com/navifirm.aspx) to download your firmware and the Maemo flasher v3.12.1 (http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-d...-downloads.php) to flash your device.

This has been working for me. However, as BlinkThinks said, you might not be able downgrade (PR_005 to PR_001) but this is definitely a shot until the next update. You might be able to work with the product code from your area and it might work....

Thanks for your efforts guys but my problem is that my version is PR_313 so it says to me downgrade disallowed, that's why i'm looking for other ways around.

Are you sure you're using correct version of firmware ? PR 1.1 is 20.2011.40-4. I had no issues flashing my N9 variant #299 phone to 001 variant. You'll only see this "downgrade now allowed" warning if you're flashing same firmware version as currently installed but with a smaller variant #.

I see that your product code should either be 059L689 or 059L8W8, either way, it is operator branded by Mobitel, hence should still be running PR1.0 (Version 10.2011.34.1)

Please note, I assume you have a Windows computer with access to internet for the following operation, and note that though Nokia might directly honor your warranty, Mobitel might not honor it anymore, so if you brick it, sorry..... Please continue at your own caution, and I will not be responsible for any mishap.
If this is the case, please do the following, make a backup (a copy of all files directly, after connecting it in "Mass Storage" mode.)

During, or after which go ahead and download Navifirm (www.symbian-toys.com/navifirm.aspx)

Once you download it, extract the file contents, and open up NaviFirmPlus. Make sure the server is Production External, scroll down to Nokia N9 (RM-696) and select 20.2011.40.4 under releases, and then click on "RM-696 NDT 16GB BLACK (059J1Z5)" if your product code is 059L689 or "RM-696 NDT 16GB ROW CYAN (059H6N5)" if your product code is 059L8W8. Then, under Save to, hit browse, select any area and create a new folder and save it into it. Then hit download.

Please note that the software above might take some time to load into place (you might not see different options), just wait, it has to parse it from the internet. Also, note that the files you are about to download is about 1GB, so it might take some time, before you are done. This was the easy part, now comes the tough part...

Now, go to download the Maemo flasher (http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-d...-downloads.php) and click "I accept" after reading the terms and conditions, and then scroll down to find WinFlasher_3.12.1.exe. Click it to download. After it has downloaded, make sure you install it.

After you install it, open up My Computer and browse to C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher and then copy all the contents from your download through NaviFirmPlus into this folder.(Make sure you have just the files directly copied into this folder, not the folder that it was downloaded into.) Now rename the DFL61_HARMATTAN.....ARM.bin to something simple like flash.bin Now comes the part, where you might end up praying every single moment..... Good Luck!

Make sure your battery is full and turn of your phone and connect it to your computer using USB.

Go to Start>All Programs> Nokia> Flasher and click on Flasher. Once here , type in the following command:
Code:

flasher -F flash.bin -f
. It'll turn on your phone and start copying and installing your firmware. If it doesn't do anything (if it can't detect the phone) turn on the phone after waiting about 2 minutes. At any point, if the phone asks you to select a method of connection, select "Sync and Connect". You might have to restart your device multiple times before the computer software detects your phone. Even if the program shows that it finished copying, but you don't see the phone turn on, you can turn the phone on. It should detect it now, and works it's magic. Make sure, you don't remove the cable at any point during the update, and that you have a reliable power supply. If anything is messed up during this part, you could end up bricking your phone.

Good Luck and hope this helps....:)

Ok i have grown some balls and tried it. I followed your steps amarkkassery and there was no success unfortunately. Got this: finishing in error state with status 10. Downgrade disallowed.

BlinkThinks 2011-12-07 19:38

Re: Change n9 product code?

The process is moot if you have already upgraded from PR1.0 to PR1.1 and you're trying to reflash PR1.1 again using another region lower than what was already flashed on your device. As I said, you cannot downgrade (from your region to another region with a lower PR_code). You need to wait for PR1.2, choose a different region (lower than what you have) and that should work. For now, all you can do is wait for PR1.2....

I understand but i'm trying to upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1 not reflashing. Don't see how this can change with PR1.2 when my PR_code is very high = 313.

What exactly is your phone's product code? Did you double check if you indeed downloaded the correct firmware from Navifirm?

olympus, can you please give me your version code: 059L689 or 059L8W8 and give me your product version from your phone: Settings>About Product and can you give me the exact code PR1.0(.....) and I can try to give you another solution.

Let's see.

I downloaded the correct version, no doubt about that. My version code is 059L689. My version is: 10.2011.34-1.313.01.3_PR_313

Try this firmware and EMMC, and see if it proceeds:

It all depends on you if you want it done or not. But if it helps, I've done this more than 10 times... It's just a matter of flashing your phone manually... Bottom line, caveat emptor....

I have bought My N9 in Qatar and reflashed it on Balcan code without any problems (I was hoping for Slovenian language on SWYPE but nothing Yet), so Olympus, just go ahead.
But today I've got message on computer on Software updater, there is some update for My device V 22.2011.etc
I read somewhere this update is just for Arabic language, so I'll wait for PR1.2.

P.S.: in kako si zadovoljen z N9?

Hi there !

Just found a solution to change product code on Nokia N9, use NSS and change the power mode to local mode. Wait for the phone to change to local mode and write in the product code you want remember to tick (enable) and press write. Change back to normal mode. Done.

Check, back in normal mode press read to see whether the product code changed. :)

First you ask how to change product code next seconds you scared for bricking the device :O

If you scared to brick your phone just wait for the damn Firmware in your region.

Well firstly I didn't say that I am scared, I just wanted some clarity. Secondly I think it was a good move because now a solution by backspace24 has come up (big thanks for that, gonna try it tomorrow) and thirdly I don't know when the damn firmware is gonna come for my BRANDED n9, if ever.

you should install the first option USB something... NOT the NSS multiflasher. Wait for the driver to install when you plug the phone to your PC - make sure you don't you a USB extension BTW...

Re: Change n9 product code?

I can not believe this :D i finally changed the product code and wanted to update via NSU, everything was working fine, update was available but then all of a sudden, window pops up: "nokia software updater has lost its connection with your device, follow these steps to help reconnect your device, yada yada. So i followed the steps to reconnect my phone but it does not help. It just doesn't update. This happens at the beginning of the update when the n9 starts rebooting or something, i tried this on three different computers (2x win7, 1x winxp), always the same. Any suggestions?

BlinkThinks 2011-12-10 19:55

Re: Change n9 product code?

That's because the NSU is buggy. That's why I stopped using it and opted for the manual flasher which is much quicker...

If it help's make sure your USB is connected directly to your PC. No extensions or hub connections.

Uninstall the NSU, reboot. Then re-install NSU. That updater has got a lot of bugs...

For what it's worth, go for the manual flasher.

So after i was let down by NSU, i decided to try this and noticed an interesting thing. At the beginning of flashing my n9 some kind of progress bar shows up, which is normal i presume, but that's when the flashing fails. The flasher then says finishing in error state with status 10, downgrade disallowed. Same thing happens when I want to upgrade it via NSU, the flashing starts, phone reboots, progress bar shows up briefly and the phone shuts down. NSU then reports about loosing conectivity. So i guess this is all due to "downgrade disallowed" situation.

No joy for me yet, any other ideas? :)
