Nokia n800 vs Archos 605 wifi

Archos 605 wifi can do pretty much everything n800 can do and it has 160gb memory and it can play dvd rips at high frame rates.....

Here are the specs..

Any thoughts???

Re: Nokia n800 vs Archos 605 wifi

At 250 - 300 euro's that's a nice bargain. Has optional 160 Gb hardisk.
Knowing Archos, the whole thing will be more end-user ready than the N800. But I wonder how good or bad the Internet experience is. We can't really tell before we tried one on for size...

But it looks promising
:)

20 euros for each codec plugin? Now that'll add up quickly...

And instead of buying a 8gb sdhc card for the n800 we can buy those plugins.......

Looks like nokia has a real good competitor this time....

Nokia will have to get its act right for the n900/n???

But ill buy it anyway

Also this device has a encrypted hard drive specifically to prevent you running software you choose on it.

Apparently this can be cracked.

But do you really want to buy hardware from a company that thinks that way.

Fine we don't want to give you new software for free. But if someone else writes better software then us. Well we don't want you to try that. You might not buy ours. Once you own the hardware it should be yours to do as you wish. If you break it your problem.

It seems funny that we will penalize M$ for that (and should) if we had done so when they were a little company like this we may have more choice now.

You made me laugh... I bet you love DRM, RIAA and worship Bill Gates.
This is no competition to N800 or what ever comes in the future.... there is no way in the world that buying a plugin can be better than buying a SD card....

Re: Nokia n800 vs Archos 605 wifi

The Archos doesn't have Bluetooth, so it can't be used as a mobile browser using 3G.

The N800 has got / will have a better browser based on Mozilla firefox. The development version is already good, and it will get better.

I bought the N800 because I wanted a FULL mobile browser. If you want a mobile video player get the archos.

Yeah, Archos has become pretty evil lately. It's sad: When I bought my PMA430, not only did it come with all the codecs (a short list, but still...), it even had the recording/playback cradle standard.

Also, all codecs seem to be limited to DVD resolution playback, meaning that, although it's resolution is better than the N800's practical limit of 400x240, the 605 won't use its screen real estate to the max either.

Can't play Star Control II or SCUMMVM on the Archos. No skype or VoIP either.
No thanks.

I think that the archos is a splendid web browser device. The 7" model should be absolutely stunning for web browsing. Also, the way it handles flash videos is great.

No thanks. Good to see more devices in this space, though!

Well, that depends...it's NOT a good thing if the majority of the devices "in this space" are crap as that will then give "this space" a bad name in the general press reviews which could lead companies to abandon the "space".
This Archos device leaves a bad taste in my mouth after taking a closer look at it's "business model" of charging for every little software "extra".
And God help them if ANYTHING they charge for in the future is based upon open source software or in violation of any open source copyrights.
What is the underlying OS on this thing? WinCE or Linux/Unix or whatever?

There is no rule that says people cannot charge money for Open Source Software. But I agree on the Archos-business model-bad taste statement. They've changed, man. :(

No, there is no rule about that but did YOU see any links they had to any modified open source code?
I seriously doubt they coded their own from-scratch OS and then had Opera make a browser for it.

See the video of viewing PDFs on the Archos?

Not impressed - it's slower than a slow thing on slow pills.

Good one. Did it show what program it was using to open the PDF? Adobe?

Re: Nokia n800 vs Archos 605 wifi

i'm an archos fan and don't want to compare the two devices. This thread is stupid. However a great feature to have built into the N800 browser is whenever a flash video tries to start in the web browser from any website it'll ask you if you want to use mplayer to play it and then automatically load the flash video live in mplayer, none of this copy and paste (UKMP) bullsh*t. Hopefully next firmware they can get it right.

Re: Nokia n800 vs Archos 605 wifi

I have the Archos 604 WiFi as a bedside video/music player.

It is perfect for that. A brilliant device. The video playback is perfect and reliable and it can pull media easily off the network and actually play it, unlike my N800 and N770.

I have an Infrant ReadyNAS. The UPnP server Infrant has apparently mangles some XML that many devices are fine with, but the available options for network media playback on Maemo are not.

And the ones that *do* play (because there are no spaces or "weird" characters) on the N800 skip and stutter.

I was not interested in re-encoding content just for my Maemo devices. The Archos takes care of that problem for me.

PS I think the Browser experience on the Archos devices is silly. I also dislike that I can't create a video playlist. But all in all I'm happy with it. The video playlist thing *really* annoys me though.

Re: Nokia n800 vs Archos 605 wifi

You guys miss the point. The archos is a pmp with wich you can surf the internet. And the n8x0 is an internettablet with wich you can watch movies. The problem is, that the archos browses the internet better than the nokia plays videos. I really want an n810 but from what I have heard you have to convert your videos and you cant watch video streams. Sure the politics may be a little odd, but I guess watching nba in my bed would only work with the archos. So what's a fan to do?
