I9500 First TIZEN phone?

http://www.sammobile.com/2012/01/08/...samsung-i9500/

Seems possible to see the first Tizen phone at MWC next month. If that is true, Samsung and team working very fast. Lets hope this is true and that they add a real keyboard :D

what do you think?

Let's hope that this turns out to be a case of "ugly duckling" syndrome :)

Looks very........ "Everything-ish" to me.

Looks OK though. Wonder what sort of case they're gonna chuck it in

And please God, let them give it a QWERTY keyboard.

Look at the comments of the android fanbois they're scared sh!!tless of Tizen :D.

One dude actually says android is open source.

I think that for starters it would be good to have something and real plan for more then just one phone. Then we could start dreaming about keyboards although I hope it will have a keyboard some day ;)

If the price is reasonable, I'd get one.

I just hope it's decent and far along enough once my N9 gets tired. That or Meltemi is actually off the ground.

If it isn't powered by Mer, it isn't worth interest ;) A big no-no for another "big bad browser" OS. we've been through this with WebOS, haven't we?

lol at the task switcher....
Anyway, now that I have my eye candy phone, I'm not buying another until one comes with:
- hwk
- intel soc (open drivers hopefully)
- open bootloader

Re: I9500 First TIZEN phone

Not sure if I like it. Looks far too derivative of many different OS's out there. Needs to be more innovative.

X11 + GLESv2/EGL drivers for it and glibc, I would take that phone in a heartbeat if it was hackable..

Re: I9500 First TIZEN phone

As far as I know the i9500 is supposed to be the Samsung Galaxy S3 and I don't think that Samsung would release a flagship device with anything but Android.
While I really hope it is not, I think this is a fake ...

Re: I9500 First TIZEN phone

Well, yeah the task switcher is quite basic but actually pretty efficient:
  • you can list more application windows at once
  • you don't have to show/generate window thumbnails

But window thumbnails:
  • are a better metaphor IMO
  • are larger -> easier to press, making application switching faster

The whole GUI looks like basic - so what, as long there are no glaring usability mistakes. :)

I might consider porting my applications - provided there are Python bindings for Qt (or some other toolkit) available on Tizen. :)

Well, you being Chuck Norris probably know everything about it, but the rest of us can only comment about what we can see.

What is your comment on those screenshots then?

And dim the lights will ya?

Re: I9500 First TIZEN phone

You are right. I know lots of things. ;)

My comment? Sit back and relax. Have a beer and wait for confirmation from samsung. I9500 might be SGlll and this GUI might be a demo...

Looks as good as the original screen shots of meego, Im really not to concerned about looks, that can always be changed, I would like to see it in action load times swiping etc that is what is important

Re: I9500 First TIZEN phone

truth is though many people around here won't be happy until there is a true Maemo successor. Tizen, Mer, Meego..thee just not Maemo.

Looking around, more and more functionality is being rolled into the mainline kernel. According to a page I saw recently, gsm modem, gps (depends on modem) and cameras are missing, but camera support is available outside the main tree. Call support, phonet?, seems to be the tricky point but it does exist in some form. CSSU devs are getting a better understanding of the internals of Maemo. Debian on N900 project for me looks quite promising, as a test bed or stripped back to basics and built on. Maybe one day someone will pull everything together to get the OS we all want.

Re: I9500 First TIZEN phone?

Looks ok... But I doubt it will have a keyboard, being portrait mode and all. Most portrait mode phones don't have a keyboard. Or if they do, it's the super-tiny keys (like BB) that you need a toothpick to dial with.

Still, will be interesting to see when they release hardware specs.

With samsung you never know today, they are the new nokia, kicking *** in all segments and creating new ones. They can come up with something extremely geeky :D

tizen is a joke. The framework sucks who the hell want to write apps in C this days? Except some geeks. There will be even more less pro apps for that platform than maemo6 has. We atleast has good devframework == qt+maemo6 and way cooler ui.

Who said something about C? Tizen apps are written in javascript and HTML5.

Programs (not apps, FFS!) written in C are heaven compared to javascript/html 5 Big bad Browser dubbing as operating system.

Yea, same here, but we're talking about reality, aren't we? ;) Device like You described can be available only in one situation - when "You" (I mean, group of people/foundation/whatever, not You personally) design it, order it independently, and write things for it. See Open Pandora o Raspberry Pi (both not a phone, I know, but You understand what I'm talking about).

There is also EFL which has a C API. There are even some Python bindings for some EFL modules - still might be a little tricky as Python is not part of the recently released early SDK.

Not really. If the rumoured Tizen reference device comes with glibc, X11, and GLESv2/EGL as the stack implies, well, that'd be a useful target for Mer too.

Well, the difference is that AMD has only plan for tablet PC APU, whereas intel has promised tablets and phones SoCs. Plus AMD has a history of supporting free drivers initiatives, while Intel has a history of developping open source drivers (actually, they promised at some point that their soon-to-come SoC graphic and wireless drivers would be open. Encouraging, but I won't keep my hopes too high on that either)...

So I'm waiting for the open-source drived Intel SoC mainly because it actually has a chance to happen in the next 6 to 12 months.

and who really cares about all that when you look at the fact that amd SoCs beat intels 20+% per clock, and dont make me even start about GPU comparison, do you really want a intel decelerator(or intel branded powervr) in your device when compared to hd6250 or better?

Re: I9500 First TIZEN phone?

Mixed feelings. Even if the N9 is two years old by the time this Tizen is released I think I might prefer the N9. Nokia still beats everyone at build quality.

Samsung just seems to slap together the latest mobile tech and throw it in a black rectangle to create a new model. Very little testing it seems...

My next phone might just be this Samsung with Tizen, but I am hoping for other choices...

Well, you don't see anything about the phone there, just some UI pictures.

Probably if you mean open drivers. But closed drivers could also work, the key is at least to have them. In most cases drivers for normal Linux simply don't exist, which makes usable ports close to impossible.

Yes, I find latest Samsung phones more bulky on feel, than N9. N9 is just a gem of hardware design. Why can't manufactures stop fooling around, and start competing on hardware? Just build a device, provide drivers to the community and that's all.

Haha I've gotten some nice chuckles out of this speculation thread. It's been too long! :'D Thanks!

But I just wanna say: if this Sammy phone makes it to MWC you all can have my left nut. Not happening. Not even Sammy is that fast.
