What phone are you going to get after the N900 ??

I've been thinking recently ..

My N900 Battery keeps getting worse (had It pretty much since it came out).. I have to charge it every night even if I don't use it much .. (If i forget it goes from ~50% to switching off just over night sometimes ..

So I've been looking around ..
N9? .. rather hard to get here
N950 ? ... even more difficult to get
some Android phone? Currently been thinking .. the Samsung note with the pressure sensitive Pen sounds nice - it is "huge" compared to most phones, but I don't mind that that much ..
(Windows Phone or iPhones are out of the question for me ^^ )

Currently I'm prolly mostly in favour of the Samsung Galaxy Note due to the fact it has a pen (I like that I can write/doodle more accurately -- e.g. on a Kanji recognition software since I'm learning japanese , ...)

That made me wonder .. which phone are other Maemo fans getting after the N900 ?

None, the only people left here are the Nxxx hardcore. When I eventually run out of N900s I will do a 'den in the USA' and go for the tablet/dumbphone combo. Hopefully by then there will be a dumbphone small enough to be a wris****ch.

Re: What phone are you going to get after the N900 ??

As I mentioned elsewhere, I've recently 'replaced' my N900 with a Samsung Galaxy SII which seems to fulfil my day to day needs based on a couple of day's usage.

Having said that, my N900 will still get used at home with the sim removed. It works fine as a Skype phone/ssh client to my home PCs/etc. (Basically, the same kind of functionality & usage as earlier Nokia internet tablets.) As a bonus, the battery seems to last ages with no sim!

I wanted a "fresh" reply of the people who still have a N900 now not an old thread ;)

I'm not sure what would be eating my battery .. I even got rid of most of the hildon widgets .. only thing that might run is the battery monitor . ^^

the problem is that it is rather hard to get here .. especially in shops. There are a couple on ebay for around ~200€ but most are used and I'm not sure if I want to pay that if the only real problem I have is my battery :(

sure that is an option but that then leaves the question which tablet to get ;)

Why just dont put it in the charger every night then ???
I always charge it every night regardless if it is needed or not, and i have always done so since my first pre-gsm cellphone in the late 80s...

I do - unless I forget - the problem is this happens when I don'T use it much .. when I use the phone more (especially with WiFi enabled of course) the battery goes down a lot faster!

My path after n900.

Desire s --> SE ARC --> nokia n9 --> SG Note and my next phones probably be the first Tizen phone.

I'm still using my n900.

Re: What phone are you going to get after the N900 ??

n9 is still the best phone to get after n900

perhaps lumia phone only if nokia changed the tiles and metro to swipe ui. hence large screen in smaller body.

tizen and webos phones, and iphone are not too bad!

yeh i recommend gs2 or new sony ericsson xperia S unless u need hardware keyboard or fm transmitter.

fm transmitter never gotta reach nokia phones again.

ofcourse another N900, It would be too boring and an injustice to get anything else other than this lovely machine once again.

Why should the N9 be hard to get in Austria? It was one of the countries where Nokia originally released it. Even it is no more available from the operators (after three months, which is sad), you should get it from every good webstore. If unsure, just order it from amazon.de

Re: What phone are you going to get after the N900 ??

Next phone (best to worst):

1- Maemo (another N900)
2- Android (NOTE, Gnex, Captivate Glide, Atrix, SGSII, EPIC 4G)
3- iOS (iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS)
4- Niche (Nokia N9)
5- Windows Phail 7.5 (TiTAN II, TiTan, Arrive, Lumia 900)
6- Alternative (Wave 3, BB Torch, Pre3, N8, E7)

I get a bit more than one day of my battery but if i use it very hard then the battery may need more recharging, just like yours.

But i once bought a zte blade, which i later gave to a friend since i found out that i really hated android and bouht a second N900 instead, but i kept the charger from it which is extremly small, and which i always bring with me in my pocket.

Unfoutunately, there wont be a worthy replacement for the n900 before Kubuntu, plasma, windows xp or something similar gets onto a decent gsm/4G-hardware.And that will probably thake a while ;(

you are right of course . I should've written it properly: it isn'T available from my phone provider (I think either 3 or tmobile have it )

"Problem" is that I like to use the pen with my N900. the N9 doesn't have a pen anymore and - correct me if I'm wrong- is finger optimized and won'T work well with pens -- or does it?

Having looked at a Samsung Note in a shop I do like the feel of it - unfortunately it was one of those without battery so you can'T bu tit on but whatever - and the fact it has a pressure sensitive pen! now If that could run Maemo or Meego .. hmm that would be cool

Re: What phone are you going to get after the N900 ??

Ask yourself - Is your phone a tool or a toy ?

Because when the "hardcore" speak, many treat theirs as a toy for recreational tinkering rather then for functionality - hence insistence on full open source. Face it - unless you are a sysadmin of some type or work in unix env full time (and some do on here), terminal and FOSS is not going to increase your productivity.

if your phone is a tool, then there are a myriad of phones out there for you. You dont have to love your tool, as long as it does its job, who gives a flying fvck whether its open or not.

3 and T-Mobile both had it back in October when the N9 was released. Now three months later both dropped it in favor of the Lumia 800... :(

Seeing that quick drop of availability of the N9 (in Australia Vodafone also doesn't offer it anymore after three months), I decided to buy me a second unlocked N9 to be safe.

Similar here in Austria :(

Apart from that I am thinking along the lines of .. should I really be giving a company, that didn't just screw over the Community once but does it again with a new product (with it having been clear quite a while before the N9 was even out, that it will be the *first and last* MeeGo phone), money or rather try out something different..

That is of course a valid point. For me it is both, as I am a long time Linux user, admin and developer. I was overjoyed to find a Shell pre-installed on my device and all the python modules needed either installed or easily installable!
So for me it does make a difference ;)

Which is why I haven'T gone out and bought an Android device so far. I'm gonna try some battery saving tips from the forums here and/or maybe get a battery off ebay (but who knows how long those last ..) - if everything else fails and I "have to" retire my N900 (at least as a phone - I'd keep it as internet tablet and as FCamera cam ;))

I'd say it prolly requires considerable effort to do so but I would think the following:

I can root the device and use different kernel,.. I'm sure it is *technically possible* - but most likely not feasable - to get maemo/meego running ;)

I keep an extra battery on my wallet all the time. It has saved me a few times. Definitely a good thing to have. And it is fun to change your battery when iPhone users are watching. ;)

I would feel wrong giving Nokia any further business, after the way they've treated the n900.

And i couldn't stand owning anything with windows on it.

I think my choice of next phone is going to be largely based on quality of camera.

That's like picking a car based on the stereo in it...

To the OP: If you like the N900, and it's just the battery giving you an issue, buy another battery. I went through 3 batteries with my N6230 in the 5 years I used it. New batteries can be had on-line for quite cheep, there's a thread on here about ones that have better capacity than the stock one even.

If you're looking to hop phones, I doubt you'll find one like the N900. It's pretty unique in what it is and what it can do. When you do go... are you going to sell your old N900? I'm sure some folks here would love to buy a spare. ;)
