proposed banner for cssu
3 Attachment(s)
SD69 in another thread asked for a cssu banner. I thought it deserves another thread so here it is.
I made one (in fact I just remade the official cssu icon and maemo banner in svg and compiled it with a cssu title for testing and stable and I will post it here. Feel free to modify it) |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
dont understand the point of it, but as a designer in love for all that is maemo related, i have to make my critique: i like the cube, believe that the colors ate well chosen as they are really distinctive, i dont like the text «community seamless software updates»: the extra spacing between letters and teh lack of space between lines, with such a skinny type, makes it unreadable. the spacing between letters in «stable» and «testing » is way exagerated as well.
tks for the effort though. |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
Thanks very much qwazix! I like the banners, yet I must agree, that text "Community Seamless software Update" is little hard to read. Other is just great.

text too short short short

Re: proposed banner for cssu
*much* better. IMO, now it's ideal, except for "Community Seamless software Update" Seems somehow better than "updates", and it's in line with official name (on wiki, repos etc, its also "update", not "updates"). But, it may be just me.
Anyway, really, *great* work. // Edit And somehow, I think, that CSSU Testing will be dubbed "release red" soon ;) |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
Thanks.
I like the revised version. I think we should drop the ".org". It will go up on the maemo.org website (replace the 2011 Coding Competition banner) so it's a bit redundant. And remove the empty space to the right maybe? |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
I suggest to get CSSU into the colored bar at bottom, left to the "TESTING" / "STABLE". Large capital letters same size as "TESTING", very tiny rest of text *)
Get a neutral one (I.E. without either of testing/stable) for general advertising. (first of the 3 below) Have some semi-descriptive advertisement mambojambo text where now there are the one or two lines "COMMUNITY SEAMLESS SOFTWARE UPDATE". Dunno how good my PR speak is today, so maybe you find something less silly for that text. [edit] *) rationale: the term 'community seamless software update' is obsolete iirc as Nokia doesn't even use the term SSU anymore. It's also not descriptive to Joe Average User, for sure not alluring, and especially it's WAAAY too long to serve as an eyecatcher and to keep users from messing it up and e.g. just calling it e.g. SSU or "the update" which clearly is something different. CSSU on the other hand is an established ETLA and "trademark", and writing it full length doesn't earn us much when we do it in large letters. A tiny text to explain shall suffice, and serve quite nice to emphasize the term CSSU, thus giving us benefit of easy identification and in turn public association of the icon to CSSU. First 4 hits on google for CSSU are in fact 'ours' - then comes [#4]Christadelphian Sunday School Union (whatever Christadelphian might be), and [#6]Computer Science Student Union :-D, all the rest on first 10 are again N900 related. So we *need* to emphasize >>CSSU<< maemo now finally gets to where it always belonged. Free. Fixed. Fantastic. Comunity Seamless Software Update maemo We are up for perfection. Want to give it a test? Comunity SeamlessSoftwareUpdate -- TESTING maemo at its best. There's no more excuse not to get it, or do You want to keep those bugs forever? Comunity SeamlessSoftwareUpdate -- STABLE cheers jOERG |

I modified the aspect ratio and png sizes to fit the space on the right, so COMMUNITY SEAMLESS SOFTWARE UPDATE has gone again in two lines, and made a "both" version that tries to depict how stable emerges from testing, so we don't have to put two of them there. All my sources are in the zip file. Use Inkscape (or whatever you want, I just love Inkscape) to edit them, or produce bigger bitmaps of them.

Re: proposed banner for cssu
God damn, I love it.
Just a suggestion for the CSSU-Testing cube icon, why not make the grey box a wireframe a la Opera Next? (See this) I'll see if I can find an appropriate texture to use. EDIT: http://goput.it/37g.png |

I liked the idea so I made a modification, but I think there's too much detail for the small banner

Personally I think less is more.
not sure a tag line really needed or suitable in such a small space... |

Re: proposed banner for cssu
I think we NEED to kill this "COMMUNITY SEAMLESS SOFTWARE UPDATE" monster, definitely.
I mean, you ever seen a car named "Volkswagen Innovative Fuel Cell Electro Car" - it wouldn't fit on the name plate ;-P I strongly suggest to go for plain CSSU, maybe with the left out full name in at least 80% smaller in between. See edited rationale in my previous post /j |

Not everybody knows what cssu means, and I think the banner is there to inform casual visitors of a community software update. I think it is essential to state it, so that a non tmo-frequent N900 user who comes here for help, gets all the good news at a glance. There are more software updates even if there is no flashing icon on my device. The rest of us who know what CSSU stands for we know where to find it anyway.
Maybe we could ditch the middle words and dub it COMMUNITY UPDATE for clarity and less clutter |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
why not just "COMMUNITY SSU" ?
We already know what a SSU is. and this is a SSU made by the community, so.. |

Imo the banner should just be like a sign post. I think the idea of red or green cube with a link to a wiki when its clicked on is sufficient. |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
Of course it is optional. I never said otherwise. But Nokia does not issue any more updates so the CSSU is the only route for updated software, and I think we must communicate this to not tmo-frequent users of the N900. Thus I strongly believe the word update should stay there so that a glance is enough to capture the attention of interested folks. (And Harick, believe me users that are not regulars here do not know what an SSU is. Even technical-oriented ones as the term is not used outside the NIT camp)
The last word is always the user's but I think we owe to the CSSU developers and fellow N900 users a banner that informs that a software update is available. Nobody will be forced to install a software update because of a banner. The tmo banner will be generic. The testing/stable banners are made for other uses (e.g. for use in the wiki, peoples' blogs or elsewhere) |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
On banners, logos and other images, the less text, the better.
All such items should, however, be direct links to something with a full text version. This might be hover-over text, a link or the package info page in the package manager. Long version, when in prose; shortest possible version when alone (i.e. as image). Here's why... Community Seamless Software Updates - quite a mouthful! Community Update - sounds like a newsletter. Community SSU - is understood by TMO folks only. CSS Update - something to do with web pages? - The notion of what it is cannot be succinctly conveyed using a partial acronym. CSSU - although not clear to non-tmo people, is visually succinct. So long as links and mouse-overs all work, the longhand name will be evident to all pretty rapidly. Consider, if this were permitted in OVI store, what's the simplest means of getting the msg across and still being accurate? ...mmm I wonder what loopholes could be found so the cssu repo installer could get permitted to OVI store mmm... Anyway, colour coding is a good idea. Is the testing so dangerous as to need to be red? I thought it was "stable with rough edges", not "expect reboots daily". Why not maemo orange be good for testing and either CSSU yellow or a lurid green for stable? ... just thinking aloud BTW thanks for doing images so we can thrash this out with some sort of context. |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
I agree with qwazix in that we want non-technical users to be able to see it and think "oh! there's an update". "Community Update" is sufficient for this purpose.
Qwazix: Those banners are sexy! Although it may be more practical to go with a solid gray cub, the grided cube is just so AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!!! and badazz |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
IMO, this:
http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1327180755 ...version was best, and propositions after that, started to eats own tail. Including my own propositions ;) |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
Here's an idea on how to appease both "updates" and "CSSU" advocates.
Under Maemo.org, on the white background, put either "update(s)" or "community update(s)", as preferred. In the coloured banner, add the prefix "CSSU-" to the relevant text, e.g. "CSSU-STABLE". (Or without a hyphen, if preferred.) |

Re: proposed banner for cssu
hover text simultaneously with clickable link is a red flag for heavy users of touch devices, so doing this here is just... ironic.
On the other hand we can add CSSU on the colored stripe. |

If you have a Nokia and don't realise what SSU stands for, where have you been. Just type "SSU" in google, "Community SSU" is on the first page. I agree with Estel, post 24. Using Yellow/Orange for Stable and Red for Testing. |
Re: proposed banner for cssu
It seems the discussion has ended. Please post or pm to me the final version of the banner.
