Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
I want to get the Nokia N9, but I don't want to leave my N8's 12 MP camera.... what do you guys think N8 or N9.
I've already made up my mind to get rid of the N8 and get the N9. I was just wandering what the Maemo community would do. Anyways, whoever wants my N8 you can purchase it on ebay through this link (sorry for the bad picture quality, I used a Nokia Prism with a 2MP camera to snap my n8: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI...m=250985363519 |
Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
I gave my N8 to my girlfriend back in October when I bought my N9. For Chistmas, she also got a N9. Now the N8 is in my mother's hands.
Both of them are great phones, with the N8 having some feature benefit (camera, FM transmitter). But overall experience on the N9 is just worlds better. |
Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
i will prefer N9. N8 also has many positive sides. 12mp camera, symbian belle, some cool apps like nokia bubbles, sleeping clock. N9 is great with great design, cool OS. its just totally different from other phones.

Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
N8 best for the camera.
N9 better at everything else. If you are a photo-maniac, then it would make sense you have a good quality camera (or the N8) with you all the time. If you are just a layman, the N9's camera is *good enough* so you should upgrade. But then again if you are a layman, don't get the N9. There's much better offerings from the Android side, where you also get a better operating system, since Harmattan is crippled on the N9 (the N950 is a different story). |

Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
Seeing how you are selling the N8 already i'm not sure why i'am answering.
I would keep the N8. It's still the best camera phone out there and is getting the crucial Belle update in 2 weeks time, making the UI experience 10x better. Neither are you getting much out of N8 selling it as it was hugely popular, more value to keep it to yourself. Actually thinking myself to buy N8 as the Belle update is nearing closer. |
Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
I think the use of the word 'crippled' is not helpful. Kangal probably meant that the N9 operating system is not as accessible as the N950's for 'hacking' - something you would only be interested in if you were a hardcore developer.

Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
im in the same predicament, but i have two N8's abd looking forward to getting an N9, i already have leaked Belle installed on both and its a great phone, but the allure of the N9 is closing in..., but i would Keep the N8 and sport the N9 as the main phone

Got one for sale in the Buy/Sell Forum if you're interested. Selling it because I moved to the N9 (though I do miss the solid camera in that thing...just wow.) |

I've been pleasantly surprised by Belle. It really is a significant leap over <= Anna. I prefer the UX to that of Harmattan. It feels more 'grown up'. If they just added the swipe to minimise/close applications, it would be perfect. :) They could also do away with some of the more byzantine settings arrangements, which haven't really changed since S60 5th Edition. The N8 is a really nice phone. There is just something about it that makes it feel 'right', especially for one-handed use. Much better than those ridiculous fondleslabs. |

N8 - Great camera, crap phone.
My 2c. :D |

Unlike a quality smart phone, the N8 doesn't let you tweak it too much. For example, widgets are limited and they can only be placed in one of 6 slots on any one of 3 provided home screens (minus one slot always used by a required date/time widget). There's no such thing as adding or removing home screens. There's no access to power user tools such as dbus scripts or queen bee widgets. You can't simply add a bluetooth PAN profile to tether with, and man, does it suck not having an FM transmitter toggle widget available. However, there are some apps ouch there like JoikuSpot as well as some polished games that make it a step up from a purely dumb phone. With all that said, with the current price of a good smart phone at about the $600 range, I'd expect something like the n8 to start around the $300-350 range, and be well below that over a year after it's launch. I think both phones are actually overpriced for today's standards, but as a long time Nokia fan, both are good for different purposes. My n900 broke recently, so I'm doing an N8/TouchPad pairing atm with ad hoc wifi. It's functional. However, it's not as stable as my n900/Galaxy Tab pairing with bluetooth pan, and I really miss having a more fully featured smart phone. I don't think I can justify an n9 at it's cost and no support in the US personally (especially given all the various hardware issues people seem to be having with it). |

Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
I have an Android phone and gave my wife the N9.
I don't need a new phone right now, but I'd be tempted to get an N9 for me too. I'd say, the N9 is way ahead in terms of UI, but the Android market makes the choice easier if there are things you want and won't have on the N9... Google sky map Vncviewer etcetc (don't care about all the fart apps, but there are really cool android apps) On the whole, there's not all that much missing on the N9, and indeed after using it 3 days straight I was baffled at my Android phone, my fingers forgot how to use it (after having used it for a year...). And I really like being able to cook up simple scripts on the N9 to do stuff. |

Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
My gf had an N8 and was *constantly* frustrated with the UI and the number of crashes, restarts and lags during normal use. She's a photographer, so having the world's best camera-phone in her pocket was great, but it came with a hefty price - frustration.
We got rid of it on eBay a few months ago, maybe if we'd waited until Belle comes out soon it might've been different, but she was ready to throw it against a wall. She eyes up my N9 like a fox looking at a tasty rabbit. If I had the cash I'd get her one. As it happens, I'm not a billionaire, so she'll have to stick to her E6 (which incidentally hasn't crashed or hung ONCE) The N8 is great for the camera, PERIOD. The N9 is great for everything else + a better-than-ok camera. Easy choice in my book. :) |
Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
Thanks to the guy from Canada who bought my N8. Now I can take that money and use it to reduce the price of the 64GB N9 I'm about to buy.

For regular mapping, there are many offline tools (well, you need to be online when downloading the maps), for routing / directions (including voice), I reallly like Navit (I guess I'm one of the few, I don't mind the user interface not being focused on Android, and I didn't mind learning how to use it and configuring it via the conf file) and OSMand. I realize that that works ok only if you need GPS routing in places where OpenStreetMaps are decent, but then again, I need GPS routing for cycling, and there Nokia (N9 and I'm guessing all others) do leave me terribly in the cold... PS, I mentioned Sky Map is missing - well, now Stellarium has become available; check elsewhere on this forum, it's a paid app (consider it a donate app), but it's available for direct download as well. Just waiting for a good vnc viewer, and I may jump ship myself. Oh no, can't, no GPS cycling routing... :-) |
Re: Nokia N8 or Nokia N9? Which one?
The N8 Symbian Belle build was finally released a couple of days ago (2/7), and wow, it really does blow Anna and all the other Symbian releases before it away. There's now a nice status bar drag down available with built-in toggles for Mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the Silent profile. In addition, you can see statuses on each of those things along with a voicemail indicator, sms messages, emails messages, music player, connected networks, and bluetooth-connected devices. Pushing on any one of those launches the expected activities.
The new Belle update actually makes widgets more useful on the N8 as well. Other than the better camera, this is probably one of the biggest advantages the N8 has over the n9. The old widget functionality was very limited: all widgets had to fit the width of the screen and 1/6th of the height of the screen in portrait mode or half the width of the screen and 1/3rd of the height of the screen in landscape mode, basically giving you 6 slots. The order in which you put the widgets in one mode directly affected where they sat in the other mode. The new widget functionality allows widgets to be much more arbitrary in width and height with the maximum size being about half the screen (so it fits in either orientation). Additionally, the placement of the widgets for each orientation is much more granular. In fact, it's about 4 times more granular than you can do on Android, but doesn't compare to Maemo's pixel granularity nor it's ability to overlap items. Belle also ships with 4 home screens, but allows you to add or remove home screens as well. Though I haven't tested it, I believe you can have as little as one home screen and as many as six home screens, each with their own wallpapers, their own sets of widgets, and their own set of portrait and landscape configurations. More thoughts: * The N8's horizontal scrolling thumbnails of active apps doesn't compare with the N9's grid thumbnails with limited zoom functionality. * Having to hold down the home button to see the active app thumbnails on the N8 sucks in comparison to the N9's simple swipe. * The N8 doesn't have a well integrated, single place to see all your messages, emails, rss feeds, and such. You have to basically launch an app (several finger presses) to get the same information. All-in-all though, Belle is a huge step forward in usability, and as other's have said, I'd likely consider getting the next/last N8 successor as a result (though I'm still hoping for a good n900 successor... *sigh*) |
