[Announce] WiFik - WiFi Scanner

Hi, I made a simple wifi scanner using wireless-tools..

If you have developer mode it should automatically download wireless-tools..

Download from here:
https://projects.developer.nokia.com/wifik/downloads/1

please test it and give me feedback, if for some reason it doesn't show your networks try running it from terminal after running develsh

/opt/wifik/bin/wifik

Here's the source if you want it..

A very good app which fills a hole in the N9 appstore. I couldn't get it to work (no network shown) as I don't have developer mode installed. I'll wait for another release which doesn't require running from terminal.

I'm working on that but there's no documentation on how to access wifi networks.. I'll update when I get it.. you don't have developer mode installed? but it downloaded the dependecy (wireless-tools)?

When i installed the .deb file it prompted me that a dependency of 132kB need to be installed. Not sure if that is the wireless-tools or not but it could not find any network.

wireless-tools is part of the Nokia repository, and package-manager automatically takes care of dependencies.

Make sure to clean up the alignment, and implement the error checking we talked about on #harmattan!

Thanks a lot, this was one of the few apps I was missing :)

If you're thinking of polishing up the UI later, a graph model like in Wifi Analyzer on Android would be awesome:

Re: [Announce] WiFik - WiFi Scanner

Does it show "hidden" networks?

Edit: It doesn't show any network. Even not the ones without a "hidden" SSID. So I uninstalled... :(

Re: [Announce] WiFik - WiFi Scanner

There's a wifi scanning app for Maemo5 which is also pretty good to be used as reference. Unfortunately it has not been ported to Harmattan.

Re: [Announce] WiFik - WiFi Scanner

I checked that app, as suggested by a lot of people, but it uses a dbus call that returns an empty reply in harmattan, I don't like my implementation (parsing the output of iwlist) but is what I can give you today, I'll keep trying other options..

Thanks for this... It partially solved my wlan-problem... One of the neighbor has AP configured in same channel... damn...

Keep up good work!

You mean you've got it working? Did you run from terminal?

Iktwo there is an app which is very close called QAD Signal by juhapekka

Quote from his last post:
Technically speaking the application just provides an UI to the data which is available from the QML NetworkInfo ( http://doc.qt.nokia.com/qtmobility/qml-networkinfo.html) and the mac address is read using the QNetworkInterface class from Qt 4.7 (http://doc.qt.nokia.com/4.7/qnetworkinterface.html).

QAD Signal uses NetworkInfo which it's not capable of showing the MAC address of WiFi Networks, so, I preferred wireless-tools..

About running from terminal, it's weird, sometimes I run it from the menu and it works just fine.. I'm looking in it..

SamGan 2012-02-29 05:48

Re: [Announce] WiFik - WiFi Scanner

I'm running from menu and I can get it to display some networks some of the time by changing the position of the auto scan slider but the effect is not predictable. Most times it display nothing then after many attempts it may display once.

What is the time scale slider for? Also it will be great it can display numerical signal strength in dB and type of password protection like WPA, WPA2 or WPS.

Hope you get it sorted out. Please don't give up. I'm also waiting anxiously for this app.

Re: [Announce] WiFik - WiFi Scanner

Hi Iktwo, have you give up on your wi-fi scanner? This would be a shame because it's almost working. Anyway I've contacted the Russian programmer who did MeeFastDial and MeeRadioMode and he is willing to give it a shot. Let's hope somebody succeeds because Harmattan is really missing this app.

Iktwo 2012-03-05 14:50

Re: [Announce] WiFik - WiFi Scanner

Giving up? Never.. I just don't know where to go, I'll start a new thread with all the info I have on WiFi for Harmattan, hope everyone see it and someone comes with a solution, I tried everything but I don't find a solution..

catbus 2012-03-06 21:46

Re: [Announce] WiFik - WiFi Scanner

Just digging more "this and that"... When i changed line how to start WiFik from "blaah...invake...blaah/wifik" to: "develsh -c /opt/wifik/bin/wifik" from "WiFik-application(or-what-evö).desktop", it worked from tapping "icon" also...

Not sure why...

At least N9 must be connected wlan before WiFik working... And if security is WPA1 or lower, then this brutal solution is working, for me, at least... but not with WPA2... really weird... [I also noticed that with lower security, N9 don't drop connection so easily... (This can be caused by "wind", "stars" and "the cat is on the moon...")]

When not connected to wlan, then N9 automatically drops wlan interface down and "iwlist" does not work ofcourse...

Really. That difference between security and AP:s... "does not compute"...

Re: [Announce] WiFik - WiFi Scanner

Sorry again...

Must confirm that this ugly solution is working, at least for me.

Just change:

Exec=/usr/bin/invoker --type=d -s /opt/wifik/bin/wifik

to:

Exec=devesh -c /opt/wifik/bin/wifik

from that "start-wifik-application-harmattan.desktop" -file...

This dirty solution helps a while, when we have to wait new wlan-radar

Where can I find this "start-wifik-application-harmattan.desktop" -file?

/usr/share/applications/wifik_harmattan.desktop IIRC

Thank you. Btw the Russian developer says he has done the API for a wifi scanner and is now working on the GUI. Hopefully we will have it soon.

Tried this but doesn't work for me. Wifik refused to launch from the menu.

Then there must be typing-error or something or somewhere...

For me, at least, this is working...

I put a space after devesh and a space after -c. Is that right?

Done that and the app started but can only detect one network (my own) although there are many other networks in my location.

Good news! The wifi scanner app by the Russian developer has reach beta version. I'm testing it now and it seems good enough. Expect a release version soon.

The developer is Artem Bukin who also released MeeFast Dial and MeeRadioMode. You can ask him about the source code when it is released. Contact detail will be in the app.
