Nokia Lumia 900 or the N9? What would you choose?
 

The Nokia Lumia 900 was announced a few weeks ago as a successor to the Nokia Lumia 800.

It is Nokia's first 4G LTE Phone. So far it is only available to North America through AT&T. The international version will be released sometime this year.

There is no better place I could think to get opinions than the maemo community. I love my N9 and want to keep it, however the Lumia 900 is tempting. (However I don't like the fact that there is no memory card slot). I do like how it makes use of the front facing camera for clear skype video calls. I would like to ask the Maemo Community what they think about the Lumia 900 (Not the Lumia 800) and the N9. Which would you rather have?

N9, no question... Windows phone is not on the top of any list of any phone I'd use. I'd go to an Iphone long before I used a Nokia Windows phone. Yes I've used one for 3 weeks and no I didn't like it at all.

nokia wp7 already failed in my country, i have not seen more than 5 persons using lumia

In the US T-Mobile gives the Lumia 710 away for free... Piece of ****. Windows was a dead OS without Nokia.

with the same range price better go off with sgs2 for now, better support, play all kind of video, amazing flash performance, great screen, but its android, sigh

I have the N9 and extremelly happy with it, specially since PR1.2. But since I'm with Rogers in Canada, I'm also gonna get the Lumia 900 and give it to my wife (meaning I'm getting the Lumia 900 for myself and letting her make phone calls on it...lol) But I strongly doubt the Lumia will steal me away from the N9, im just getting it since im my renewal time anyways.

Put simply, if you are even the slightest bit technically inclined... you will definitely want to stick with the N9. WP7 devices will suit the typical fruit owner perfectly though...

i have each n9, and lumia 800, and i can not wait for luma 900!

my n9s(black,white64gb) are both collecting dust in my closet. lumia 800 is a joy to use with fresh, vibrant OS in windows 7.5. nokia is bringing updates out quite frequently for any issues which may become.

n9, just got boring to use. lumia 800 feels fresh everyday.

i really like the looks of it, just beautiful - big brother of n9 (hardware-wise)...
if that phone was coming out with meego on it, i would buy it right away.

Last I had checked (a month ago) it showed they'd give it to you for 20 bucks when renewing a 2 year contract. I was looking 'cause I was thinking of picking up the C7, which they no longer have on their page, but it's at the Walmart near by, and twice I've tried getting it there, but the first it was too busy (during Christmas Shopping) and second time, the normal guy that does phone contracts was gone.

But even at 20 dollars... I didn't want to encourage Elop's insanity, so I would refuse it even for free :D

I want to see the whole deal between MS and Nokia burn like Elop called MeeGo/Qt/Maemo a burning platform.

Seriously the largest corporate blunder I have seen in my life time. I mean even worse than Commodore's lack of R&D funding and Marketing, and Atari's out right lack of Marketing and gathering developers that killed both of them.

On the other hand I'd like to see Microsoft perish the same way, unfortunately the have tons of Marketing and R&D (even though I have a strong belief that a lot of their developers purposely sabotage Windows because they are pissed off that the managers don't listen to their good ideas, because everyone claims that MS hires the most gifted programmers, yet Windows is a steaming pile of....

Sorry for the rant, it's bed time, and I've had too many random nonsensical issues with Windows lately! For example, using a Mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter going through my Receiver to my TV. The Audio would work during the speaker test, setting it to the 5.1 surround... but NO WHERE else. Including the Windows alert sounds!

How does that make any sense at all?

Anyhow, rant over, again I apologize for going off topic....

I agree with you, but the T-Mobile at Costco and the T-Mobile at Walmart and the T-Mobile stores are giving them away free with a new 2 year contract from what I've seen, and from my experiences, no one wants them.

back on... i did have to choose between the two and i finally decided to go with the N9.... its dead cos theres no other phones coming with this os. But Its also unique for the same reason. But thats the way i see it...

Can I transfer files between my linux box/WP phone over USB?
I don't need live tiles and all that crap, I need basic functionality to get things done. So it's N9 for me.

N9 without a doubt! The Skype video calling looked very nice on Windows phone though, but we'll probably have Skype video calling on the N9 soon too one way or another.

I am rather enjoying my N9, and I came from an N900 that got stuck into a boot loop because the emmc was broken. Yes patience is a virtue with this device, but I love the enthusiasm and willpower of the N9 community(Some Nokia people still helping) in regard to making this device succeed and give it better functionality. It is a testament that we have the power to choose instead of pandering to the masses, There needs to be more colors of crayons in the box. It does everything I need it to do on a daily basis, and thanks to Vlad I can look at my standby screen anytime and see the weather :) I am not a compulsive phone buyer, which is why i keep my phones for a few years. This one will continue to get new apps, new updates, new features, and will grow through the years into a better device which keeps the interest in check. In the states there are new cell phone commercials every week. New tablets come out every freaking month. They want you to continue to spend your money to keep "up to date" with the newest gadget that has more features that are useless than worthwhile. But most people think they want and need it otherwise they will feel left out of the masses. I got the N9 because its one of a kind and it is not a bad piece of hardware either. There is never a best device out there because one or the other will always have something the other one doesn't. There will always be a compromise. I prefer to take the N9 and make it something that suits my daily life and get the use out of it I desire. Sorry for the long, long sentiment and I hope it was somewhat on the nose of the topic at hand :)

People who aren't as tech savvy should definitely go with the lumia, especailly if they think 'terminal' means part of an airport or the status of an illness. :rolleyes:

am currently having a N900, love to go with N9 bcoz
1) its mono body and curve screen
2) O-S os

One of my colleagues at work has a Nokia Lumia 800. The physical appearance looked very attractive to me. Good thing there's a Nokia N9...pretty much the same physical appearance, but with an "open" OS, like my Nokia N900. :) That would be my next device should I decide to buy. I still wished there was a physical keyboard though, it will require huge adjustment to use Terminal on a touch screen.

Simply because they don't fit in with today's "Ecosystems". [can't wait till they wear that freakin word out...... and remind me to ad it to ******** Bingo sometime] and the networks can't fill them with their crippleware.

But, in answer to the original question........ It has to be the N9...... Can't be doing with an overpriced imitation.

The problem is that the built-in browser doesn't support plugins (like Flash), and it's closed source - so hacking in Flash support probably isn't an option, INCEPTION notwithstanding. :(

i was able to use lumia 900, and it's just like lumia 800, only bigger and with a front facing camera... and oh, 4g enabled, but you won't really need that since everywhere is a wifi zone..:D

sure the design is similar to n9, but it's bulkier, heavier and i don't find it better than n9 in most ways...

sure its camera app is better, but less compared to other phones at its price range or even lower,:p
there's more apps available for it compared to n9, but who needs over flowing apps if n9 has most (if not everything) that you need?;)
and it's got a dedicated cam button, better battery life, and a bigger screen.:eek:

n9 on the other hand have nfc, usb mass storage support, higher screen resolution, and has better ram... and lighter too..:cool:

besides, if you want to buy a windows phone, why not try the upcoming samsung omnia m, or the samsung focus? reviews said they're good, minus the camera.. (only 5mp):(

if you wanted lumia because it was dubbed as the best smartphone, better buy the s3 or just wait for iphone5... their price range don't have a significant difference.. and they are supposedly smarter than lumia. it has single core processor compared to others having dual or quadcore.

:) i have to say that there's a reason to buy lumia 900 --- its social integration capabilities. however, if socialnetwork integration is what your looking for, better look for other windows phone that are way more affordable than lumia..

believe me, you'll just waste your money with lumia 900. there's no reason to commit to the new lumia, not when the same amount of money (or even less cash) enables you to have a much more capable windows phone, android or ios device.:)

It is highly probable that anybody buying a Lumia 900 will get a bad one due to a whole host of problems reported by a large number of users. It suffers from defects such as inability of wi-fi to coexist with LTE, poor battery life, vibration rattle, purple tint display, sticky capacitive buttons, phone hangs after a call, self-reboot, camera unable to focus, pink spot in photos, slow screen response, terrible echos during calls, battery sudden drain with heated phone, dropped calls, etc. Many users exchange their phone 2-3 times and some found satisfaction after the 4th exchange only by exchanging for an Android.
