OS2007 HE this week?

So maemo news said at the beginning of the month that the hacker edition was on the horizon and that its imminent release could be measured in weeks, seeing how its gonna be almost a month now, can we expect it anytime soon? Or do you think "measured in weeks" means we can count all the way up to 52?

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

I guess you are being optimistic... up to now there was only one person working on-and-off on 2007HE, as an informal project, and he's probably taken some holidays, too. Certainly there was no indication of the *number of digits* that would be needed to count 'em weeks :-)

Maybe people here with the know-how could help the project?

At the moment is seems to be that more Nokia 770 newcomers appear in the forum than N800 newcomers :). Is it the price ... ?

A logical step would be to use the HE 2007 as base for a "free" distro. Are there people out there to free the currently closed source components ? Hello :) !!!

The current pricing push made by Nokia to clear out its old stocks has finally got the N770 to the price point that many people find attractive. Even if they wouldn't of considered an internet tablet before, for the price you can get the N770, people are starting to 'experiment' which can only be a good thing for the IT form factor.

It was definetly the price.

Confirmed! I bought one last week for about 75 pounds (still haven't recieved it yet though). At that price, for the actual hardware you get, the offer was too good to pass up.

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

The influx of new Nokia N770 users will hopefully keep development on this device alive. I would be interested, from a developers point of view (developer from a totally different field though!), what new users are wanting from the platform that isn't already there as I look around for new projects to do. I already have a few idea's but I'm welcome to suggestions. Maybe a new thread would serve that purpose better.

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

I sure hope that the 770 development is continued to an extent at least... I bought two of them and have found them very useful... java issues and flash are annoying, but I would like to see 2007HE updated.

I bought mine off woot.com and they reported selling 8000 (yep, thats thousand) in their 24 hour period. The other resellers that have dropped their pricing have reported high sales for the 770.

I hope Nokia will take notice.

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

A store in Canada got 1500 and sold them in a week or two. A coworker just bought one for $145 (about $400 less than I spent after taxes, duty, etc. (got it in the U.S.)).

So now. Why should I care about OS2007 Hacker Edition? (I've been out of the loop for a while until I helped him with his new 770 and forgot how much I liked it.)

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

In the last few weeks thousands of the 770 showed up all over US sites. Almost all priced at $139.99 US$ So I bought 2. Since one goes to my geeky daughter, I may have to buy a third if these prices hold.

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

It wasn't the price for me (I can still buy the N800 today in a blink of an eye)- its due to the 770 with the Hacked 2007OS gives you the best of both worlds... I am new to the 770- I was a Dell Windoze Mobile user- however as of late I have moved back to Linux; Im getting a GP2x soon; maybe it is down to the price- Im about to become a dad and my wife is going to stop working full time and my pay will support everyone.

My point about why dont more people nhelp my the new verson of the 2007HE is because Linux is build on the idea of everyone who can- can work together and instead of sitting and asking "can you do this for me?" why not ask: Why can't I do this myself?

Most of the help people need in the n00b forums can be google'd- however why have a n00b area at all?

I know this much- if I was a programmer who could help towards making the update to 2007HE I would. Lo I am only just starting to learn python- I started as a network\wifi admin type. Altho Im a Optian...

ApApparently its going to be the latest updated 2007 OS so, a lot of
bug fixes, as well as possibly the choice to use the beta Mozilla
browser rather than the Opera one. Also, I've been running
OS2007HE the old one, and I'm hoping they fix the cover on/off
thing to shut off network services like the old OS2006.parently its going to be the late updated 2007 OS so, a lot of bug fixes, as well as possibly the choice to use the beta Mozilla browser rather than the Opera one. I am a programmer, and a very successful one in my chosen industry (gaming and entertainment) but contributing to 2007 HA edition for the N770 is way beyond what I have found through regular searches. I would gladly help but it seems a somewhat closed source and very exclusive club which I'm sure that if it were to become open, many would contribute to.

Jelly-0 2007-07-31 22:33

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

Its just a shame it's so closed. I guess its best just to be happy with what you can get, unless you really think you can do something to change it.

What is this N770 of which you speak? ;)

You cheeky smeg!

Hmm but good question. lo I guess N could stand for Nokia (however I know it stands for N-Series; which of cause the Nokia 770 isn't apart of. However I do have a question can the N800 play N-Gage games seeing as thats what Nokia made out with all of the N-Series systems???

Hmmm BitTorrent methinks

OK, I can be patient with the new hacked version - just get it right.

My question is: What is the link to website where it will be released so I can check if it's out?

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

The "Garage" project page is here :
https://garage.maemo.org/projects/os2007on770/

...but I wouldn't hold my breath, the "Activity rate: 0%" isn't very encouraging.

Except if the real development is going on elsewhere, of course.

why doesn't Nokia continue working on a port to the 770?

phi 2007-08-15 20:53

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

I guess I was overly optimistic. Nokia shouldn't post a teaser like that on maemo and then make us twiddle our thumbs for what should be measured in months and not weeks.

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

Makes me want to start raising a stink. I'm glad they're in love with the 800, but why lie about it (that they're going to make some changes and fixes to the 770?) I'm so sick of my browser crashing, and I really want some alarms.

Re: OS2007 HE this week?

seems like the only reason there is renewed interest in the 770 is because of all of the ones for sale at under $140. my boss bought 2. they probably sold out on whatever was remaining in stock.

However, it seems like the unit is at the end of it;s life cycle, obsolete and effectively discontinued. So new updates specific to this unit will be few and far in between....

except they posted a news item on Maemo July 6th explicitly stating that they were releasing a new hacker edition very soon.
