REMOVING original stock Nokia's apps

A guide to remove original Nokia's applications

First you need to download
rootsh
FileBox

Using X-terminal type:
HTML Code:

Root
apt-get --purge remove games*

This command will remove all your games (Blocks, Mahjong, Chess, Marbles)

HTML Code:

apt-get --purge remove osso-tutorial-l10n*
This command will remove User Guide languages.
If icon of the User Guide is still in menu then via FileBox go to:
HTML Code:

usr/share/applications/hildon
and you should see User Guide.desktop file, just hit delete and that's all.
Well if you don't use Store application, you should probably delete the Store.desktop

Original non-needed packages
sudo apt-get remove
hildon-theme-beta
osso-chess-ui
gnuchess osso-graphics-game-chess
osso-lmarbles osso-graphics-game-lmarbles

Failsafe method on Debian systems (should work on Maemo too but I haven't tried):
1. grep /usr/share/applications for the caption of your desktop icon (the path differs slightly in Maemo due to optification)
2. open the file you just have found and find the entry starting with "Exec=" - this will give you the actual program name
3. run apt-file search <program> to identify which package it belongs to
4.uninstall the package

Only installers, it's not necessary to remove all, remove what you need but all these packages are safe to remove

And what if i remove: hildon-theme-beta : It uses 7152kb disk space. It won't harm my N900?

@rotflmaoo,

Just make sure that you are using another theme when you apt-get remove it! :)

For tutorials:

apt-get --purge remove osso-tutorial-l10n*

Removing stock RSS reader could harm in some manner the microb "Add feed" action? Is there a way to open some other RSS reader (FeedingIt) from microb "add feed"?

Re: REMOVING original stock Nokia's apps

Thanks for the info, guys and gals.

Using the suggestions present herein, I have removed the tutorials, sketcher and most games. It did not save me as much space as I had anticipated and, to my dismay, Faster Application Manager no longer works. It says unspecified error, check the log. The log besically complains that the packages that I have just removed were all dependancies and that I should run apt-get update to resolve the conflicts. Running apt-get update results in exactly the same output, ending with "run apt-get update to resolve". (Hmm, recusrion, anyone? :))

The default Application Manager still works, as does apt-get for specific packages. Looking at AppMan log, it seems to have the same problems as FAppMan, only it treats them as warning, not errors.

Any ideas of how to bring FAppMan back to life without having to reinstall the bloatware? (Running apt-get install fremantle offers to pull the deleted packages back. I just have not said yes to it yet.)

apt-get install --reinstall (name of the package)
Try to run this command in X-Term, with the right name for FAM.

It might help if You by accident removed something which You shouldn't, and FAM depends on it. In my case it's all good after removing all games, tutorials, some of installers, and good few files afterwards (like game sounds, editing .conf files that included games).

pichlo 2012-10-01 23:27

Re: REMOVING original stock Nokia's apps

Err, sorry but I know how to reinstall a package :D It was more a question of how to persuade FAM that all is OK without reinstalling anything. Never mind, I upgraded to CSSU and that fixed it.

Re: REMOVING original stock Nokia's apps

A question. Can I remove stock apps for which better alternatives exist? File Manager and HAM come to mind. I know that they are both integrated in some way or another, but perhaps this can be changed...

Failing that, can FAM be persuaded to use the same repositories as HAM? So that I do not need to update both every time.

Estel 2012-10-09 13:52

Re: REMOVING original stock Nokia's apps

For the latter question - no, until you use (write) some clever scripting.

Re: REMOVING original stock Nokia's apps

Rather than starting a new thread, I'd like to ask another question.

Is it possible to remove nokia-maps completely and cleanly? After removing it with FAM, it left a few files and folders behind, which I removed manually, but Address Book seems still integrated: the "address" field is a button that tries to open Maps when clicked. Can I get rid of that?

If not, then I'd rather put Maps back than have a half-broken phone :)

That was really smart thing to do, err :Dr I'm sure that Estel can write his answer again. And I thought You are one and only master blaster with Your N900.
