Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

I don't have a N9 yet and I would like to know more about the features of the phone.

I know that we can download maps using Wi-Fi and use the maps later. However, I did some search on the web and found that Nokia Maps in N9 requires data connection to work. Is this true? (if this is true, what is the point of downloading maps in advance?)

Straight to the point, can I use the full functionality (locate myself, search for destination, search for routes, etc...) of Nokia Maps in N9 without having a sim card?

Thanks very much for all of your helps!

I recently tested this the only thing Nokia maps needs to work is the intrnal gps and it will work, nothing else is needed.

yup did a road trip offline this past weekend to avoid roaming. There is a small issue with voice prompting stopping after a period of time though. Restart the drive app is the current workaround

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

With preloaded maps data connection is needed only if you do a search for suggested restaurants etc. nearby and if you want to use satellite maps (textures). Gps, navigation and street searches all work in offline. Just remember to position the screen on the map to your general location (city or county), as the search to database seems to be somewhat restricted to the area you are viewing for purposes of making it a bit lighter on cpu and memory.

It is still preferred not to have your cell connection completely off (only data turned off) as it seems that N9 can do fast positioning based on cell towers, which then helps to get a faster GPS fix in 5 to 30 seconds. At least this was my user experience recently on a trip so I gather that Maps' local database would contain also all cell IDs.

Yes, it can. I am testing it right now, locks in less than 10 sec and following where I am traveling (on bus).

Depend. For routing, in some cases, it need data connection. I try to calculate route between my town and Montelupone / Italy in offline mode and Nokia Drive told me that it can not routing in offline mode.

So, for me, Nokia Drive / Maps is not a trully offline navigator.

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

I tested in Spain last week (i'm from the UK), Switched all data connections off and both maps and drive worked perfectly (if the maps are pre-downloaded).

On a side note, the phone really doesnt like not having a connection to the internet does it! Poor thing was desperate to connect, must have asked 20 time a day!

From my experience all routing is done offline. Check that you have downloaded your entire country map.

It works great if you know the address of where you want to go, but POI search is 100x better when you have internet access. 80% of the time, Maps doesn't know what I'm searching for (I'm in the greater Los Angeles area). If I have internet connection, it pulls results from who knows where, maybe Google, and it ALWAYS finds what I'm looking for and then some (such as phone number).

I downloaded (and check) all Europe maps. I supose the problem is with small / very small towns as start / end of the route. The same problem when i make the route from my town (wich is one of the bigest in my country) to my grand-parents village.

In my case maps are indeed offline but I can't navigate anywhere without data connection. It says it can't find route in offline mode, do I want to try it in online. I could swear that it used to work offline some time ago. Don't know what happened.

It does work completely offline perfectly here.

It's the route options you need to change - like can it use the ferry, motorways etc. when planning the route.

Nokia maps are not particularly good at planning - the routes are a bit crap.

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Yes, it works perfectly well offline. That's the main selling point of Nokia Maps.

However, in earlier Symbian phones (particularly in my N82), there was an option called "display alternate route" and it would change the route and show another way to the destination. I wish they had this feature in N9, it was very useful some times.

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Showing maps and where you are, searching cities and routing works in offline mode.

What not works offline is "places around you" like restaurants, shops or sights for example.

Edit:
It seems to be depending on the country you are in, what works and what does not.
And it seems like you can't navigate from one country to another in offline mode...

so, by the word COMPLETE i think of something different.

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Routing DOES NOT work offline all times.
Route: Timisoara, Romania -> Rome, Italy
App: Drive
Route settings:
1. Motorways ON, Toll roads ON, Ferries ON
2. Motorways ON, Toll roads ON, Ferries OFF
3. Motorways ON, Toll roads OFF, Ferries OFF
In all 3 combinations, offline routing is not working

rash.m2k 2012-10-18 09:38

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Maybe it genuinely can't find a route. The routing algo is not very good.

Grab a tomtom, if you have a car you need one.

smcsa 2012-10-18 09:46

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Conected it finding the route (with or without ferries, conf. settings). What is strange is this: offline routing and POI's in my country works fine, routing or POI's abroad not working.
So, i supose the correct advertising is "Offline Maps and Routing IN YOUR COUNTRY" :D

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

It doesnt find any route anywhere offline. And it's starting to get on my nerves. Alright, problem recognized. Even though I have maps for my country downloaded, they don't appear in maps app. Anyone else faced this?

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Dowloadet how ? OTA or Nokia Suite ? I have downloadet OTA and all Europe Maps are fine. But when I downloadet voice file "My Own Voice" by Nokia Suite, this options does not apeare in Settings.

szymeczek34 2012-10-18 15:41

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Downloaded OTA, I know it should work, it used to work. And flashing doesn't solve this manner, I've already tried that many times.
Edit: Solved long time ago already. Reason: When deleting maps I didn't let the app to restart. It shut, I waited a while and start it manually. That's it. I let it restart and now it works.

Slightly off-topic, but does N9 map app show real-time traffic information?

You can also do the mod via N9quicktweak, tweak D.
I believe you can make it update every 5 minutes automatically.

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Does not tend to work offline well if big routings:
Did awsome offline job around london and around tallinn (both maps and drive), But if i want to calculate route inside my country to 160 km away countryside, it cannot find route offline and if i switch online, it takes a long long round route. I have all settings of road types enabled. if i start calculating nearer towards same destination, no problems offline.. wierd!

Sub-optimal routing? Well that's common even in online routing but that's another issue...

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Found the possible reason: When i tried to follow the main motorway and tap the start location nearer and nearer i found this: at some point it succeeded finding route : just at some ceratin point on the motorway and forward. The motorway is on the map, but when i pinpointed the location where it no longer could find the rote on the same motorway, i zoomed in and saw: map is broken, the road just ended. when i zoom out again, road appears back.... broken maps? all updates for maps are up to date. I will try to reload the maps again later and if that does not work, i attatch some screenshots to back up my statement here.

Check the route on nokia maps in your browser, if they cant find a way then it will in no way work on your n9 nokia doesnt have the best maps around.

NDarius 2012-12-05 10:16

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

in browser, it works as expected, maps are not broken there. Although nokia maps is now here.net :) maybe something to do with that. Will try to reinstall my country map on N9 and check again

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Reinstallation took care of it! Now it works again offline, and the broken spot is fixed now.

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

Hi all,

Yes, I have the same problem, maps are broken at certain zoom level, tiles are not there, and offline routing can't figure out a correct route.
My problem is that I need all Europe downloaded, and I can't refresh a single map (you have to delete and redownload ALL of them).
So downloading all of them is a little annoying but not that much, but the real problem is that there is no way to check that all download are correct, so the same problem will occur when you need it the most : lost in some little town without a data connection... (like it happened to me 2 days ago....)
Do someone know how to refresh a single map?

Re: Does Nokia Maps in N9 work in complete OFFLINE mode?

hi again,
I finally find how to do it and that's quite easy when you know how to do it. I post it here as it may help others having the same issue.

Retrieve the zip file you need from http://static.maploader.maps.svc.ovi..._file_here.zip

You can find the number of the required zip file(s) by editing the catalog-00.02.49.104.xml file in /home/user/MyDocs/cities/MapLoader/ directory.
For example, for whole Europe, there is a line in the xml file which is like <File Description ="Europe" Id="2" Zip="2.zip" Link="maploaderzip-00.02.49.104/2.zip" ZipFileSize="4226468773"> so the file I need for whole europe is at http://static.maploader.maps.svc.ovi...2.49.104/2.zip

Then unzip this file into /home/user/MyDocs/cities/diskcache/ overwritting existing files when needed.
Et voilą! Europe is available offline in Maps and Drive and I don't have any issue about missing roads anymore!
I guess you have to change the "00.02.49.104" numbers in the catalog file and the url link according to the maps version you have. Of course, this also works for individual country (example 21.zip for France)

You can also download the POI using the same URL but putting the name of the continent as zip file, for example http://static.maploader.maps.svc.ovi...104/Europe.zip for Europe and unzipping it into /home/user/MyDocs/cities/diskcache/ClientIndex/

The only issue that I have is that I don't get the list with downloaded maps with a little green tick on the side, but tht's not very important IMO. Also I d'ont know how it will work over next maps udpate!
Hope this help!
Krakinou

It works fine for me in offline mode. The main issue I had was trying to download the maps for my city. Now that was a pain in the ***.
