N900 loudspeaker swap
hello,
after doing the typical usb fix I did a swap of the 2 internal loudspeakers. I took 2 loudspeakers from a 5800 and put it in the n900 body. 1 on them fits perfect, the other one ( near the camera ) needs some mods to fit well. also 5800 are bigger than original ones, so they don't contact well with the mainboard. the "problem" starts here... I soldered them ( 5800 ) to the mainboard and switched ON the phone. wow they sound louder. I played music at maximum level and output level is higher but sound is too sharp. any ideas? what can i do to make sound less sharp?? just for trying I took 2 big loudspeakers ( 3W input ) and just can say...wow... playing a movie with that speakers in a phone is a nice experience. regards |
Re: N900 loudspeaker swap
awesome. I always thought of this mod since I replaced my 5800 with a N900 back in 2009
did you make any photos of the process? |

2 Attachment(s)
1 pic with 2 5800 speakers.
the other one just was a try... I tried also with 2 speakers from a thinkpad t61 and sound was Perfect, but they won't fit. regards. |

Great! Just what the doctor ordered. I've been googling around to know which Nokia phone has the loudest speaker; I found out it was 5800 and X6. And I come over here just to see your post to confirm that. About the sharpness, have you tried using a music player with an equaliser? I want to swap my speakers too. Though I don't know where to get a 5800 speaker, but I'll keep searching though. |
Re: N900 loudspeaker swap
Yes there is an application in the repo "symfonie" got equaliser editing try it Chuks

here you can see the difference between n900 and 5800 loudspeakers.
n900 left-5800 right. i have tried the sound with symfonie app and sound is better but not perfect. regards |

Re: N900 loudspeaker swap
As an alternative, you could try the n95 speakers? They were pretty beefy to. Would be interesting to see how they actually differ.

Re: N900 loudspeaker swap
Just to way in here, i really don't think you can do much more, you can maybe make it louder, but i have to admit that the "onboard" sound in the N900 IS the best i have heard of all phones/handhelds.
If you wanna do something else then look into modding it and putting the 2x3W AMP between speakers and JACK out, powered from the battery and someway off turning it all on when needed. You can use other amps then the VMA2012 i showcase in my DIY audio thread (in signature), there are loads of them, and some are much smaller (E.G. more flat) From what i remember from last i had my N900 taken apart & last i had one of the N95 taken apart is that the speakers are very similar, but the N900's are better and the cabinets in the N900 are better tuned, if you take a N95 and compare with a N900 the N900 wins in quality, the N95 may be a bit louder but i can't see the point when it begins to sound like sh*t. |

Re: N900 loudspeaker swap
This is one of the prettiest parts of this community for me, if it can be done, it will be done. With few more soldering tutorials who is still sure we will ever abandon N900??? For your next trick pls connect quadcore (might be too energy hungry, dual will be enough) processor. Great stuff!

5800 is loud bassy but lacks definition. Any chance OP trying it out ? :) |
Re: N900 loudspeaker swap
Heh heh, cool.
OP, try using mplayer and specify using alsa sound output. This will bypass pulseaudio and all nokia's haxxary WRT to equalisation. Does it still sound tinny? Also there was a kernel patch that lets you apply an FIR filter in hardware on the sound chip itself without any penalty in cpu/power usage. |
Re: N900 loudspeaker swap
For people preferring GUI solution, smplayer implements all mplayer functions, so alsa outpuit can be specified easily (using GUI).
