[Announce] Updated Pidgin (2.10.9) & Purple Plugin Pack

I don't think I have to introduce Pidgin, but if you have really never heard of it, I can say that it's a powerful instant messenger, Visit http://pidgin.im for more details.

As you might have noticed, Pidgin in the repositories was at version 2.7.7, while the upstream is already at 2.10.x. I felt like there were too many bugs not fixed and features missing, so I gave compiling it a try. Apparently, it went alright and the updated packages are in the repositories.

To accomplish this, I created a diff between vanilla 2.7.7 and nix_nix's 2.7.7 (current version in extras and extras-testing). Then applied it to vanilla 2.10.2 and fixed conflicts. This means credit goes to Pidgin's team and nix_nix. I also managed to fix some problems with the buddy list.

What's new? A lot, see the official changelog for details (http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ChangeLog). The only Maemo-specific change is improved handling of the buddy list. The package is compiled with encryption for Gadu-Gadu (don't forget to enable it in the account settings).

Status area and notifications plugins from the repositories seem to work fine with this version.

Downloads: the newest version is available in extras-devel and an older one in extras-testing.

More plugins! If you think that there's some kind of functionality missing, there's a chance that the remedy is within a huge pack of plugins called Purple Plugin Pack (see http://www.guifications.org/projects...ginPackPlugins for a list) and now it's in the repositories too. There are so many plugins that I can't test them all on my own, so don't be surprised if some of them don't work. Please report such cases in this thread, so I can fix problems or exclude broken plugins from the package.

Thanks, I tried to contact nix_nix a lot for this update, never got a reply back though.

Do you think that this could work for harmattan aswell? (n950 users)

I have been waithing the pidgin for harmattan (N9/50) from the beginning. Would be nice to have it.

Re: [Announce] Updated Pidgin

I don't have anything that runs Harmattan and I know nearly nothing about its internals, so I don't have the foggiest idea about how many adjustments it would need and I won't be able to support it.

Start with libpurple0, finish with pidgin-l10n or purple-extra-protocols (they're both optional).

Check out the GTK@Harmattan thread, looks like Pidgin is already running in some form. Javispedro even found a way to activate the on-screen keyboard (which was the main usability issue since I did the initial GTK port last summer).

Install it by running:
Code:

dpkg -i path/to/the/file/libpurple0_2.10.2+nix-1_armel.deb
in x-terminal as root.

nix_nix was an employee of Nokia when I last talked to him in October 2010. Could be he was on a burning platform and jumped into the sea. Glad to see somebody maintaining Pidgin. :)

That's the whole point of it now, because those packages are the result of a widely automated jump between distant versions. I will upload them to the repositories as soon as I know that there aren't any critical problems. If there were any, they could cause even more confusion for newbies.

First of all, make sure that you're not in silent mode (obviously). Secondly, open the menu and then Tools -> Preferences -> Sounds (keep pressing the small spot on the right side of the rightmost tab until it becomes visible). Find the option called "Enable sounds" and set it accordingly. You can also scroll to the very bottom and click "Preview" to check whether sound works at all.

Re: [Announce] Updated Pidgin (2.10.3)

installing the libpurple0_2.10 requires libcryptll >=1.4.2 & libgnutis26 >=2.4.0-0

these two extra packages are not listed in libpurple0 package page here

and the problem that I have to find them manually and also install them from deb packages my f**king internet uses proxy which doesn't allow fapm to connect to repositories

Hi, which files do I need to download in order to do the update? Do I need to download all files? Sorry for the noob question. Thank you very much.

And now pidgin 2.10.4 is out, with a couple of security fixes (MSN and XMPP remote crash vulnerabilities)... don't shoot the messenger :)

libpurple0 and pidgin are the minimum. purple-extra-protocols provides support for two more protocols. If you need a language other than English, then install also pidgin-l10n.

As tonypower88 mentioned above, there are two additional dependencies: libgcrypt11 and libgnutls26. You might need to download and install them manually (http://maemo.org/packages/).

Nobody reported any problems, so I guess I'll try to upload the packages to extras-devel in a few days.

I have managed to compiled it and successfully turn on in Pidgin. However, the result was far from what could be expected. The conversation window changed a bit, but instead of a nice theme I only got black text on white background with and some plain rectangles.

I think it's gonna work, but it has to be compiled for Maemo and the resulting .so file placed in /home/user/.purple/plugins/. If you lack the skills, I can give it a try later.

OK, one question - I have quite big archive of pidgin conversations on my n900, will they work after update? I mean, is this version of pidgin compatible with old format of archives or converts them if needed upon instalation (if the format changed, if not - forget my question ;))

gidzzz 2012-05-13 20:15

Re: [Announce] Updated Pidgin (2.10.4; now in the repositories)

Logs are stored as plain text or HTML files (and it was that way since I can remember) under /home/user/.purple/logs/ and the log viewer simply displays their content, applying some formatting in case of HTMLs. You can rest assured that your archive is safe. :)

I really hope that Pidgin will be ported to Harmattan. :(
Just like the Hildonized Pidgin, having a Harmattanized (?) one would be very great. (Like having an tray icon and running in the background)

Would like to donate for the one who will Harmattanize Pidgin!

Which, together with fact that pidgin is basically a gui build over libpurple makes it easier to write something new (gui) using libpurple than port pidgin ;) or port some existing qt gui, e.g. http://www.qutecom.org/ (google returned this to me, I haven't tested if it compiles, in the code there are switches to compile it with either gtk or qt, so if there are no other dependencies - it might be compilable for n9/n950 ;) )

Yes, it does. And GTK is already ported to Harmattan by MartinK. So it's only the GUI part that needs to be done

I don't have N9 and I'm too busy with N900 development in my free time to even install N9's SDK and try, maybe someone else who has more time will do that ;) Doesn't N9 have libpurple integrated into messaging system like N900 has? Then, theoretically, one could only compile libpurple and make N9 use the new one instead of stock one (N900 has a package called "Pidgin protocols plugin for conversations and contacts" - http://maemo.org/downloads/product/M...t-plugin-haze/ which does that). I can promise you however that if I manage to enter this year's coding competition and win either N9 or N950, I will try to compile qutecom ;)

I only have 2 questions:

1. Could you please make Album plugin (https://www.guifications.org/project...ory/show/album) works with Pidgin Maemo?
2. Where is your DONATION button? :D

Thanks a lot. Been waiting for too long for this apps to be finally updated ;)

gidzzz 2012-06-20 17:16

Re: [Announce] Updated Pidgin (2.10.4; now in the repositories)

1. Yep, see the first post. If you want other plugins from Purple Plugin Pack, I could also attach them. I've got them all, but I tested only Album so far. I think I'll make a package out of them and put it in the repository soon.

2. It was nowhere to be found, because 1) I don't have a project of my own 2) I was afraid that donations would make me feel obligated to do more work than I'm comfortable with, while I'm here just for fun.

However, after pondering it for a while, even though I haven't started my own project from scratch, I've spent quite a lot of time on Open Media Player and some time on Pidgin too. I just added a donation link to my signature and I guess I'll just wait and see how it impacts the amount of pleasure I get from developing. :)

I have packaged Purple Plugin Pack today. Album is included, so if you decide to install it from the repositories, it's a good idea to remove the album.so file which was attached in the first post (from "/home/user/.purple/plugins/").

I have also uploaded a small update for Pidgin, in which collapsing and expanding of buddy groups works more conveniently (no accidental expanding while scrolling or long-pressing to collapse).
