Increase the RAM in the N9
Is there anyway to increase the N9s' stock RAM? Maybe utilizing the storage memory as virtual RAM?
|
Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
why do you want to increase RAM ? It's already big as 1GB is more than enough
|
Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
1GB isn't enough?
|
Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
1GB is enought large capacity
|
Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
You can increase the zram amount (I read somewhere that the N9 has a few mb allocated to ramzswap) You can increase the size of that and see if the results are better.

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
isnt 1gb ram is more than enough for N9 ?

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9

I don't know why but when checking thru Conky my N9s usage of its RAM is higher than the usual when multitasking. I can only open up until 30 apps then the phone hangs if I opened up a 31st. |

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
can't remember where though if ramzswap is enabled in the N9 kernel it will be simple to change the amount of memory allocated to that by following the ramz wiki http://code.google.com/p/compcache/w...ingAndUsingNew

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
Why not try lugging your desktop around - use that for your 30+ apps and your feeble N9 for the trivial stuff like making phone calls.
|
Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
The n900 had more that enough ram too but now you see it's the most limiting factor. That will be probably true for the N9, and as more and more things manage their way on the phone (such as NotSoEasy Debian) this will become even worse. So seeking ways to optimize is never premature. Especially when you know it's the last device of it's kind.

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
So guys any other options on this? Any developer who maybe can make an app that can tweak the RAM?
Thanks!:) |

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
If you get more RAM is 31 enough or will it be "only" 31 apps?

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
English tip:
"few" = 3-4 "couple" = 2 |
Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
I use less than 20 windows when handling multiple projects at the same time on a dual screen desktop set-up :/

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
I'm sorry but... Why the **** would you need 30 apps running?!

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
Pffft, if you can have 4 to 6 apps running (background) in multitasking, that should be enough !
However, the N900 had an even better solution. The apps were working (multitasking) in real-time (icons). What I do not like is that the N9 (like the iPhony) stop apps when not in use. What I mean is that my N900 still can show max ~32 apps, and more reasonable 4 apps, live, e.g. youtube clips running. Look if I want to stop an app running I can click the stop/pause button ! Or not ? |
Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
I just can't think of 30 or more than 30 apps that I need to run at the same time of period...even for desktop usage...perhaps I'm not multi-tasking guy :p

Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
I don't know what he's talking about, I have 32 applications open right now, and I still have 13800KB of free Memory.
If you want a list of the applications; Terminal (running top) Clock Gallery Calculator Feeds PocketYouTube Notes Nokia Public Transport Sudoku Trojita Stop timer Magnify (which by the way IS real time on the task screen MeeWhip Lite Puzzle Master Sports Tracker Quick Voice Input PhotoCam3D Kmplayer Recorder Pro Firefox Opera Mobile Filebox MeeCatalog EmuMaster Flashlight Builtin Youtube browser MeeCast Calendar Web Browser Contacts Email. Messages and lastly Music... It does tend to get a bit on the slow side at that point, and no I'm not overclocking. That's some serious multitasking right there! slaapliedje Edit: Oh, forgot to add, the responsiveness was better than Windows XP running on a system with 128MB of RAM. I do know this from experience, long story short, a friend's motherboard died, swapped motherboard, but it had different ram, and I only had a 128mb stick that would fit (she had 256mb before) and the difference between XP and Ubuntu launching OpenOffice was 10 minutes vs 5 minutes (no exaggeration either!). |
Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
What's the point? Battery stress-testing? Just curious.
|
Re: Increase the RAM in the N9
i was hoping this thread was about soldering more ram chips to the board. oh well...

Devices will have twice the N9's current RAM in no time, so maybe we could futureproof by offloading some of the N9's traditional memory tasks to Dropbox and converting more resources to something more RAM-like. This way, chasetheangel could have 60 programs operating at once with only a single N9 and buy beer with the saved money. If this helps, the 'thanks' button is that way ---> |
