Re: Lumia has hdmi function. Why Not the N9? Is it possible?

You mean HDMI out of microUSB, MHL?

Well, why there is no dual-core CPU in N9, although it was announced almost 1 year after Samsung Galaxy S2 was announced?

Why N9 has 1.4 Ghz CPU and Lumia has 1.5 Ghz CPU?

The answer to those, is Microsoft and Elop.
Full potential of Maemo/Meego was not even wanted to be demonstrated. N9 is about absolute minimum what was required in the Meego-contract between Intel and Nokia.

Because Nokia chose that chipset as part of their step 5 of 5 in regards to Maemo. Blaming Microsoft is easy, but that decision existed before Elop. He'd rather have it killed.

Maemo was in motion... no, Maemo and MeeGo was in motion before Elop was put in place. Blame the right people.

No proof of a contractual agreement exists that Nokia had to produce a product. Tons of other players that were in the MeeGo licensees and developers have not produced anything.

composite is more than enough in a device that doesnt properly play even some 720p videos....

Therein lies another issue.

Even mid-tier level phones can output via HDMI/720p and can play 720p. What I don't get though, the N9's SoC should be more than capable of playing that level of video without issues.

Not the case.

Re: Lumia has hdmi function. Why Not the N9? Is it possible?

So two questions arise
(I have not purchased an N9 yet but am planning too)

So the Nokia n9 defiantly cannot play hd movies (even without possible software mod)?

Also so the ability to output to hd is not going to happen then?
(As I thought some clever coder would be able to mod the OS like the community updates for the Nokia n900)

The N9 has 1GB RAM, the Lumia 900 a mere 512MB. IMO, nothing was a bigger show stopper on the N900 than insufficient RAM.

It's a phone and not a vacuum cleaner.

Get raspberry pi if you want hdmi mediaplayer for your TV.

Or Samsung Galaxy S2. You can get second hand for ~ 200 $/£/€ already. Install Cyanogen to it and forget Nokia. SGS2 has MHL.

Or don't do that, remain with your current phone, choose (as rainisto mentioned) the Raspberry Pi, save money and marvel at the lack of talent, inspiration and originality of the creators of Samsung Galaxy S2, 3, 4, 5 and 1242534 with all their features.
P.S. Which have already been bettered by the LG LS970 (an equally forgettable phone by itself).

Re: Lumia has hdmi function. Why Not the N9? Is it possible?

So far it seems like the N9 cannot posses the hdmi feature due to lack of a dual processor but the N8 had less of a processor

Symbian^3 OS
680 MHz ARM 11

But still had the hdmi option. Is there something else hardware wise that is required?

Or could this feature be added by an experienced coder

...Yes I just noticed Lumia does not have hdmi feature guy in shop must have lied... Anyway

dsp does the video processing, n9 has a shitty one like in n900 just clocked a bit higher, new symbian phones have magical broadcomm gpu with superb dsp, especially nokia 600, 700, 701 and 808 with the newer version of the chip

my guess would be that omap soc that is in n9 does not even support hdmi output, but i wont even bother to check

I use push-up app and push videos to media renderer over wifi. Pushing 1080p video to wdtvlive while writing this. Much better then using cable. Can carry my phone around and use while playing all kind of media on tv and hometheater system;)

and how much does that setup cost when compared to a few $ hdmi cable costs? are you saying that people should spend $100+ just so they can play videos form their n9 decently (and this is playing videos FROM n9 but not WITH n9 so why even use n9 in this setup)

My Commodore 64 cannot play 720p videos, what cable do I need to enable it? Would it possible if I get HDMI cable?

Answer to original question in this thread (Is it possible) is: hdmi is NOT possible in harmattan.

Are you on drugs or something, there is no hdmi connector, there is no hdmi enabled hardware inside N9, it was decided at very early design phase that there is no business case for 720p video output thus there is no hardware in the device. N8 was 'the camera' Symbian (totally different operating system, different product family and targets to different end users), so in N8 there was case for hdmi output.

Hdmi cables are cheap, but where are you planning to plug it in, the hole where no sun ever shines?

PS. this is yet again duplicate thread, you should just go to http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=79146 (Video playback epic fail: My N8 plays 1080p My N9 couldn't even play 720p). That thread is dedicated to Symbian N8 whiners who don't understand that there can be hardware differences and that some things will differ between operating systems (and not all missing hardware cannot be fixed with software).

point is that his setup doesnt have anything to do with video playback from n9 to tv

Symbian N8 whiners who don't understand...

-> I don't WANT to understand the reasons behind the hardware differences that make a N8 stand out and N9 so crippled with regard to the video playback function.

Obsolescence by design would surely come to mind.

Buy a rasberry pi for 35$ and install xbmc then oush it to that player;)

And you get a great device in the price;)

You cant say that my post has nothing to do with playing video from n9 to tv because it is excatly that. I display my video wia wifi to the tv. It just a sollution to the problem. For me atleast!

Ps: most new televisions have media player built in that can handle media getting pushed to them!

Yes some people are happy to use Windows and Mac OSX, but still there are some that want to use everything in Linux.

Linux is Obsolescence by design since I cannot run my favourite OSX video editor in Linux.

I don't WANT to understand the reasons behind the operation systems differences. I WANT to run my OSX application in Linux. I WANT, WANT, make it happen, please? pretty please?

again, why even use n9 in this setup when it is clearly more convinient to use a HDD, memory card or a flash drive

and the main thing is that you are not playing video USING n9
i think people want to play video with n9 and not just from n9 because then i can use a regular HDD with larger capacity and lower price

When you edit a post don't just add a reason for an edit but not actually edit the post, It doesn't make sense. Either strike out the "Lumia has hdmi function" part of the post or delete that part entirely.

its is like playing it from n9. Browse the video on your n9 longpress then choose share and push to device.! Dont even have to touch the media player connected to tv.

Once again I'm only letting you know of other possibilites because there are NO hdmi on the n9 and there will never be one. Better to find other ways to play your videos to your tv!

Re: Nokia N8 has hdmi function. Why Not the N9? Is it possible?

Hardware keyboard, Video projector, HDMI, USB OTG, memory card slot, dual SIM etc Why not in N9 ? Every product is result of lot of compromises . Having all possible features makes product big ugly expensive clumsy batteryhungry monster that no-one actually wants to have.

In N9 superior industrial design and user experience got priority over many rarely used features.

I am type of person that would like to have all fancy features but them in real life do I use them ? As example in technical sense PAL/NTSC composite video out is history from time of analog transmissions and tube television. How many of N9 does even have such a thing any more ? I know that composite video out quality is really poor because it is analog tube TV quality and I don't see much of use for it, may be just demo on programming classroom. That's all true but would I use HDMI if I would have it ? I have couple of tablets, iPad and Android, they have Hdmi but I just have never used it.

It is just much easier to invent all kind of features that in real life are rarely used.

Like the sgs2 and 3 that no one actually wants to have?

Re: Nokia N8 has hdmi function. Why Not the N9? Is it possible?

I absolutely hate it when people think that the number of cores of a processor affects whether or not the device has HDMI output. GPU isn't the same as CPU.

This is exactly what happens when people buy something without thinking and/or doing simple research, and end up complaining here asking absurd questions that border on absolute stupidity.

Does sgs3 have all things that I listed ? Or are they coming on sgs4 :)

When you can't have all possible features, you must make decision what features you have and what do not. Someone else would rather take hardware keyboard than hdmi.

I personally would like to have from list hdmi and usb-otg but when i am honest to myself and look what features I have used on devices I have, they are still very rarely used features.

This discussion is pointless because there are a lot of devices on market and in every devices they need to make choices and choices made differ a little bit device by device. There are reasons to have or not to have every feature.

There is also choice in strategy, some manufacturers make only couple of models, some others make dozens of variations with different set of features.

Re: Nokia N8 has hdmi function. Why Not the N9? Is it possible?

The limitation is due to TI OMAP 3 SOC, which only has S-video out for second output.

The N8 runs a low clocked TI OMAP 2 SOC, and then adds in a Broadcom Mutimedia chip instead of using the SOC gpu, this is because Symbian can run well on low performance processors.

A TI OMAP 3 with a Broadcom would have cost more, probably used more battery and other possible problems performance problems in the driver area, which wouldn't effect Symbian

By the time the N9 was being designed for production, Meego was killed by Elop, So doing all the work to make a phone with a TI OMAP 4, which does have HDMI, instead of using OMAP 3, which had been used in both the n900 and n950(which would have been released in 2010) didn't make sense.

I think most of us would prefer that the n9 uses OMAP 3 to OMAP 2 plus broadcom. I could care less about outputing HD video, as opposed to a high performance CPU. I mean the n800 and n810 were OMAP 2, with I think an Epson GPU, the broadcom is much better GPU, but I would still take a OMAP 3 over OMAP 2 and broadcom for my uses(cpu, not gpu intensive).

The best would have been OMAP 4, but this was unlikely once Meego was slated to be killed.

Re: Nokia N8 has hdmi function. Why Not the N9? Is it possible?

Oh yeah, that N8x0 GPU was hilarious. It could do 3D acceleration in theory, but not at the full resolution of the device... :)
So it was useless and the closed buggy drivers where useless, too.

About the N9... get over it, Nokia sold you a C-Series device for the price of an N-Series device. Isn't Elop a genius? ;)

I would rather have the 1.4GHz arm11 and broadcom bcm2763 as the cpu performance would be almost on par with a8 on 1ghz

SGS2 has MHL, USB OTG, memory card slot.
Dual SIM can be get with an adaptor, video projector through MHL-HDMI-adapter and hardware keyboard with Bluetooth or USB.

So yes, SGS2 and SGS3 is as closest you can get a "perfect device".
