Ive only gone and done it :-(

Yesterday I signed up for the Samsung Galaxy SIII Blue. I had to do it. I've been a Nokia man since the mobile phone was a brick, and even a suitcase like thing.. We all know Nokia is like a wondering child in the night at the moment, Maybe some one will pass by and find that child and take it back to were it belongs.... But for now they have nothing to offer... the N9 is one of the biggest flops I've ever seen in the world of mobile phones. Watching their promo video I wanted one so bad it was untrue... then BANG... no N9 for the UK market....WHAT THE F*** is that all about..????

Maemo.org has been the best thing that's happened to the N900 this is the heart and soul of smart phone life style.. And I wish to thank everyone involved in tuning my quiet a basic smart phone into the bomb that it now is...

So I should have the Samsung on the 1st of June an to what I can tell by the videos on Youtube and also the SII before it this smart phone is going to be a killer.

I will be placing my in perfect order N900 on the bay once I have my Samsung so look out for it. and it really is in near perfect order ie 1 tiny scratch on the case, the kick stand dont flick like new but still sits happy in home position, 2400mAh battery ( dam site better than the Nokia battery.) Screen has never been touched, it as always had protectors on from brand new... it a worth while thing to look out for...

there is only one issue I could never sort out and that was the email accounts on the phone would never update them selves every 5 mins.. no matter what I did it just never would! but Im sure some one knows the answer to that little issue.

Loz. :-)

well living within the uk, i was unsure if i should get a n9 but i ordered mine over amazon and i was able to get a 64gb black n9 for only £365, so you might still wanna consider the n9... btw i got mine last month and im still loving it.

My be the SIII wont be what its cracked up to be... yes I will see but its quick and as long as it does what it says on the tin... that will do for me..

All I want in a smart phone is Internet radio, email, skype, MSN, music player, text and fast internet... as long as these work without waiting for loading... then Im happy.

Good price yes from Amazon, but I think the light inside me for playing with the os and trying to learn commands has dimmed... And the N9 is on that par with the N900 in that way... hence why I think the SIII will be ready to go apart from adding a few apps, in short hobby and hastle free its just a smart phone...and it does just that I hope.

I don't think it's always wise to purchase high dollar items, such as a Nokia N9 from places like eBay. I'd suggest using Amazon, Expansys and the like instead. Plenty of places in the UK to purchase a N9.

Regardless, congrats on your purchase. You're part of the 9 million folks that pre-purchased a Samsung Galaxy SIII.

Well maybe if the drive of linux kicks me once the SIII is in my hands I might sell it and get hold of a N9 from Amazon... but I'll wait and see..Heck I've waited this long anyway.

I understand completely. I just figured out the N9 cannot have attachments to e-mails longer than 5 MB. The solution was opening xterm, modding a obscure conf file in vi and voilą. Some years ago this was fun, but now? Things are getting old. Besides, not being able to attach files larger than 5 MB by default? WTF!!! What kind of smartphone is that?

I still like gadgets though, but on a more "higher" level I guess. Being able to actually use the device for real things is more important than modding files right now.

This mail absolutely sum's up my feelings about linux smart phones and I guess to pretty much all of them on the market.. When I first got my N900 it was like beautiful sex:D with no compromise:p, but now its like the same old cream crackers, I'm not sure weather to have it with cheese or butter or spread... its just a cream cracker.. I did love the tweaking and making things work just so... but I have a major hobby and that's Audiophile and that has ruled my life for years and taken many penny's... The N900 is a major drain on my time too and I can't have both or I don't get anything else done in a day.. great if I was a rich man.. but I'm not. It's time to move on..

no, today when someone says linux it means linux distro which means gnu/linux and not linux kernel

Re: Ive only gone and done it :-(

btw one last comment the n9 is A LOT less head banging and hassle free then the n900, the reviews of the n9 get it spot on... but be sure if you are gonna go for the galaxy S3 and spend that kind of money, it wont feel like a premium device cause of the the building materials are very similar to the S2. However the spec sheet is just insane :)

price vs premium feel ratio is important, you may want to consider a Sony phone, spec's may not be the best but its a quality device.

I've had issues with Sony in my time... they wouldn't get another penny out of me for any of there products...Nuff Said.

Well nowdays, people refer to bloatware as OS. This is from wikipedia: "An operating system (OS) is a set of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs." and it's provided on an Android device by the Linux Kernel. So Linux is the OS. not Dalvik VM.

Regarding OP's point; I do agree that such settings should be graphicaly available to the avarage user, and dropping to shell shouldn't be expected of everyone. Not all of us(people) want to be a techie.

@Loz: I don't like very much the way Android works, but if I had to pick one It would be the Galaxy Nexus. I can't stand sony myself either :)

You can install LXDE Fedora or Ubuntu in Samsung Galaxy S3, if you need and miss real Linux then.
And who knows, later you may be able to install Tizen to SGS3 and Samsung unofficially would support it too.

S again am I been told here that the Samsung is just as much the toy the N900 is? it can be jail break and other OS can be installed? Not that I'd want to.. as there are more than enough apps... I'm sure to find all I need without having to break my phone...

The "average user" you say. There is absolutely no way fix the attachment bug unless:
  1. You live and breath Linux/Maemo/MeeGo
  2. You visit this board

You have to edit the file /home/user/.config/Nokia/Fenix.conf by adding on a separate line maxAttachmentSize=XX under [General] where XX is in MB.

There is no way this can be done out of the blue even if you are way beyond the average user, you have to know the inner workings of "Fenix" on the N9. For the average user the N9 will stay crippled forever.

On the SGS3 stuff just work right out of the box. But you can also do heavy modding by installing custom roms and so on. The best of both worlds, very similar to what Symbian and WM used to be like, only Android is better.

Yes, you can make a chrootable Debian/Ubuntu image for Android. I followed a guide to do so myself on the N9 for an Easy Debian-style rootfs image. :D http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1172504 Well, there are lots of apps that streamline the process, and I guess it runs fine since it's been tested/used a lot already..

"jail break" is not a right word because it is as easy as power-kernel and CSSU for N900. See Cyanogen mod.

But this is slower than your average Maemo 5 session.

Also, you can't have OpenGL ES programs inside VNC.
(Perhaps someone should come up with an enlightened drawing API to bridge Android and GNU/Linux, or as I have started to call it, GNU Plus Linux ...)

Or better yet, move the entirety of Android off bionic dependency, and make it use glibc/eglibc. RAM isn't as much of an issue on cheapass phones as it was back when the G1 was hot ****, so why keep using bionic?

Well it's been a wait since I made this thread and I now after all the hu-har with the S3 pearl blue which is what I ordered but will now get a white to minimize the wait, I am home waiting for delivery within the hour. And I can't wait... just since this morning Ive had to restart the N900 3 times!!... I belive on the first page of this thread some one says keep the N900 you might think about returning to it before I know it!!... Well my answer to that is I don't think so... never have I gone back to any old phone Ive moved from so I can't see that happening with this N900.

Thats like having a Ford Model T, then been handed a farari then saying after a couple of drive... nahhh I want to go back to my model t.

It's a no brainer...

had to restart n900 e times during one morning? you are either lying, or your n900 is defect or what is most likely you are using it wrong(using it right is having properly configured n900 with cssu-t and kp installed and with swap on a decent microsd card, oh and not having various *patches installed)

Loz 2012-06-23 10:39

Re: Ive only gone and done it :-(

What i find funny is how someone can find it so dificult to beleave that i had to restart my n900 3 times in one morning. Im not gonna try and justify it. Fact is i nolonger even have to turn it on as im now using my S3 to write this msg.

And does it do what i want it to do? HELL YES!. The only thing ill miss is the slide out keyboard but everything seams to work and work fast.... and not one restart since it came on the 20th.. And that I can handle.

So my next move is to clear my N900, and stick it on the bay...

Loz.... happy bunny now :-) :-) ;-)

You may want to also give potential buyers a heads up that your handset could be defective.

Thanks.

Re: Ive only gone and done it :-(

Ha not being funny but my N900 is in pristine condition, the only thing about it that might not be right is all the software and aaps needed on it to make it do what ive always wanted it to do but the fact that i dont have a degree in phone prgramming means lts pretty much been a slog doing every day tasks. So im sure some one who like tinkering will enjoy my phone once its gone, but i can tell you right now im not missing it. Yes things like multi tasking i can't do but hey ho... ill get over it for the lightning speed and ease of use with this S3. So watch the bay cuz it will be online between this eve and tomorrow. It's time to move on for me.
