Can't Boot Completely - Gets Stuck at Blinking White Dot Pattern

Hope someone can please advise....

N900 was working fine...or at least appeared to be....

I shutdown N900, but today when I tried to boot it up, it seems to get 'stuck' at the part where the screen is black and you see the horizontal row of several blinking tiny little white dots.

Have waited for quite awhile for it to get past that part, but it doesn't, seems to get stuck there and so display doesn't change, just see the blinking white dots...

Any way to 'clear this' or do I need to reflash?

Thanks!

No real fix other than a reflash IIRC?

I had this once many moons ago, after downloading a buch of apps all at once. The phone started to lag so I gave it a reboot, my only guess was rootfs had became full and could no longer boot?

Was afraid of that....

I thought about rootfs space issue, but I had just recently deleted some apps, to free up more space....go figure....

You post actually had me checking rootfs space too, 40mb free. I had better be careful too, lol.

Hope you get it sorted ok mate.

You might have to flash., If you have used backupmenu lately, you can be back to normal in no time. First, though, make sure your battery is completely charged, using something other than your N900 to charge it, because this could just be a matter of recovering from that condition. Rebooting with a fully charged battery might get you past the dots.

had a situation recently too where my N900 didn't want to start up any more neither.
i'm on GNU / Linux thus don't usually have LostDOS around (except @ work :() but for some reason had that started up & running that evening, so i tried to connect the N900 to that...
it took the PC (with se7en 64bit) a connection to recognize the N900 but after that NOKIA Suite (i had installed a few months ago to upgrade N8 to Belle) kuicked in and the N900 started up :D

if you have a PC with NOKIA Suite handy, it might be worse a try...

+1 to what geneven said. Backupmenu is absolute lifesaver in such situations, and if you haven't had it (and habit of doing backups often) before, be sure to install it, after You set everything up on device, after sad reflash.

Hmmm.....As I recall, I had 48MB free and thought I better free up some more space. So, deleted a few apps I didn't really use....

OK, preparing myself for reflash.... ;)

I did use backupmenu not too long ago...so, should be in pretty good shape there...

As for battery charge, it did get very low on me all of a sudden....once I noticed that, I shutdown N900, pulled out battery and put it in the external charger I recently bought to fully charge up...put it back in and then had problem....

Agree 100% with your points about backupmenu and making frequent backups....probably been about 2-3 weeks since I did backup though....

Re: Can't Boot Completely - Gets Stuck at Blinking White Dot Pattern

I just reflashed my N900, according to messages in terminal, it appeared to have gone well.....

However, after reflashing, I still can't boot up completely.....so, after discovering the thread about 'rescueOS', I thought I'd give it a try to see if it would allow me to boot up completely....unfortunately, I have not been able to get rescueOS to work right...so, back to 'square one' as we say....

Should I try re-flashing maemo again?

Do you think I need to re-flash the emmc too?

Thanks!

If you suspect flashing didn't work right, go ahead and flash again. I almost always flash the Emmc too.

Hit another snag......

When I try to flash Emmc. I get a device busy message...per the wiki, I then did the modprobe command and then tried flashing again, but get same busy message.....

Any suggestions????!

Thanks

did you flash the EMMC 1st?
considering the fact that your N900 doesn't boot up anymore, this may not matter, alas.
that's where it would be handy to have a +real+ backup / restore tool (i.e. partimage) that would allow you to start Rescue OS, indeed, and either use earlier images (both of / and /opt) of your own functioning device or, at default, from any other working N900

Well, considering that my initial rootfs flash didn't work out, so can't boot up, flashing EMMC next is like doing it first, right?

Agree that it would be nice if there was better way to deal with this...

at the risk of sounding stubborn, did you try to connect it to a LostDOS PC with NOKIA Suite installed (since flashing rootfs)?

No, didn't do that.....don't know what LostDOS PC is....think I know what NOKIA Suite is though...

i thought you can use NOKIA Suite with Windows PC?....if so, I can possibly try it that way.......

Re: Can't Boot Completely - Gets Stuck at Blinking White Dot Pattern

Installed Nokia Suite and tried connecting N900 to it via USB cable....after I few tries, I did see on PC that it recognized that a 'Nokia device' was attached, but doesn't see it as a N900....

N900 display lights up and then soon I see the blinking little white dots on the black background again....but doesn't boot up....

So, think it's back to reflasing Emmc and rootfs again.....

Re: Can't Boot Completely - Gets Stuck at Blinking White Dot Pattern

Tried flashing Emmc again....but as the previous time, I get the error message that device or resource busy.....

I've followed the wiki instructions carefully, including the command to deal with this error message, but to no avail.....

Any other suggestions???....

Thanks!

did you tried to flash emmc then FIASCO image then emmc ? or flash to pr-1.2 and if you able to access to OS then you can reflash to pr-1.3 if you want.

Thanks for your help, sifo....appreciate it!

As for chronology, if you read through my posts, it describes the process I've gone through regarding flashing attempts....

In summary, I did the following as I recall:

1. Flashed FIASCO (rootfs...) image, but still only boots up to the blinking white dots part....

2. Flashed emmc image, got the 'device busy' message, and did command regarding this, but no go, still only boots up to the blinking white dots part....

3. Flashed FIASCO (rootfs...) image using the 'Cold Flashing' method you referred me to, but got the 'device busy' message, and still only boots up to the blinking white dots part....

So, it seems my key problem now, is how to deal with the 'device busy' issue, so, that the flashing process can take place properly.....

take out the battery for 12 to 24 hrs.
(if you already took it out for a few hrs, this is probably not going to change anything, though)

MAKE SURE BATTERY IS COMPLETELY CHARGED BEFORE DOING THIS
when putting battery back in, start right away with a cold flash

Thanks, misterc....that helped!....

Now, I can connect with flashing process....

I did cold flash....

Then flashed emmc...went OK....

Then flashed rootfs....went OK partially....

looks like your EMMC is corrupt :(
if your N900 is still under warranty, NOKIA Care Center seems the only option to me

Thanks for your input....but I don't understand why you think problem is with EMMC (as I noted that I was able to flash the EMMC successfully after doing the cold flashing) ?

Here's what I saw in terminal while flashing EMMC:

Code:

Users-MacBook:nokia marks$ flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f

The error message you refer I got while flashing the rootsf image after flashing EMMC....

welcome... back! ;)
how about giving backupmenu a shot?
the only shortcoming it has is that you have to have the same Kernel (Power) version on the target device (the one on which you want to do a restore) and the source device (the one from which the backup was taken)
if it is the same device, obviously, you have to get the same kernel version back before being able to use the backup

I had backupmenu on my N900 prior to this problem....I should have a backup file somewhere....probably a few weeks old....so, was planning on reinstalling backupmenu and trying to do a restore......

AFAIK, I was using the stock kernel.....unless having installed CSSU Stable installs a modified kernel.....

One question I have is whether any or the combination of the following things I installed or used on my N900 contributed to the major OS crash:

1. CSSU Testing

2. Backupmenu

3. EasyDebian

4. Extras-Devel Repo

5. Swappolube

There may be other specific items, but these are the first ones that come to my mind......

Or could be that I just didn't have enough free rootfs space?

Had about 48MB as I recall before this crash....

Thanks.

3. EasyDebian

4. Extras-Devel Repo
