Galaxy S III - THIS is how you release your flagship device
I've been following the release of the new Galaxy S III fairly closely and was constantly thinking to myself: this is how Nokia should have done it.
The Galaxy SIII was announced beginning May 2012 and released globally (sans the usual suspects) end of the same month. Then not even a week later the kernel source code is released to make the devs happy who had helped the predecessor become so successful). Hardware wise you push for bleeding edge features in every significant category:
And THIS is how you create a vibrant "ecosystem" around it: Samsung has outdone Nokia in producing a huge variety of models each targetted at a slightly different demographic/niche. They offer phones and tablets with 3", 3.5", 4", 4.3", 4.8", 5", 5.3", 7", 7.7", 8.9", 10.1" screens, some models have cheaper variants featuring only WIFI. Some might say they are just throwing stuff at the wall and see what sticks, but that is actually a viable strategy when new technologies arise - *if* you have the cash; which Samsung does (Nokia as well btw, at least up until recently). That way they can also experiment with new formats, e.g. like the Galaxy Note, a seemingly way oversized phone (phablet) with stylus that nonetheless became hugely popular especially in Asian markets). Then on top of that you offer upgrade paths for the newest OS versions for those devices that support it and source code for the devs. One thing Samsung and Nokia perform comparably though, is the somewhat mediocre presentation events of their new flagship devices (long-winded, unexciting, confusing for both, geeks and plebs). Samsung is also the company that is pushing Tizen, so they have a contingency plan if their current Android strategy should ever go belly up. I think this is the kind of vision many people would like to see from Nokia. |

Too bad that no matter how awesome its hardware is, it's still running a really, really awful operating system.

Re: Galaxy S III - THIS is how you release your flagship device
If only it wasn't that expensive.
And the only better OS is Maemo. IOS/WP and Blackberry are all way worse. Quote:

Re: Galaxy S III - THIS is how you release your flagship device
Basically the LTE versions of the S3 have dual core Krait and are carrier subsidized. The Canadian LTE has 2 GB of RAM whereas all the others have 1 GB. The non-LTE "world" version is pentaband UMTS with the quad-core Exynos.

SGS3 is nothing... Wait for gnote ll. That will be top of the line in every match aspect.

Oh oh,its chuck norris :O
**** just got real >:) |
Re: Galaxy S III - THIS is how you release your flagship device
Yes. I hope Nokia's general board members throw up when they watch Samsung going way ahead.
Nokia had all the chances, even better, but it blew it by submitting itself as a Microsoft slave. Either they (general board) were very stupid or highly incompetent, because at least everyone else knew the shortcoming in WP7 and the depressing 15 year of loser history of MS in the mobile world. |
Re: Galaxy S III - THIS is how you release your flagship device
it`s not actually bad....I like android 4.0....pinch to zoom in calendar, amazing email client....I`m actually for the 1st time since I got my N900 being thinking of replacing it with this phone.....that means that Samsung is doing an excellent job

Kangal, is that firm data? Do you know the release date?

Re: Galaxy S III - THIS is how you release your flagship device
I like the "wireless charging" feature. I have the solar powered Seiko watch that uses a super cap instead of a rechargable battery.

Re: Galaxy S III - THIS is how you release your flagship device
btw, is there a hot swappable battery in SGS3?
And, is there in any phone really yet? That would be very useful. N900 has that kind of hack, but it is rather useless, without hardware mods which would increase the internal capacitor. |

So, TC, you want an Android Nokia device?

-Imagine a NOTE that slips easily out of your pocket and into your hands for a quick annotation with the S Pen. -Then a friend arrives and comments on it....that's when you prop it up on a bench and show off with it dancing. -Then another friend arrives and its a crowd. You load up a funny youtube video with the kickstand in landscape....and since the kickstand doubles as the antenna, you don't struggle in low signal areas. I think the NOTE 2 is going to arrive between early September - late November. The carriers will likely delay it by another 3 months, but that's what Americans deserve for creating a phone contract monopoly system. |
Re: Galaxy S III - THIS is how you release your flagship device
Glad to see another device being talked about on here and one thats a lot lot better than the N9 i might add.
I very like the note and like others cant wait for the new version, even the first one knocks spots off anything Nokia is churning out right now haha. |

Yep, another strategic step that makes sense. It takes an investment of 500,000 USD to become platinum member and gets you a seat at the foundation's board of directors and thus more insight and influence in anything Linux including Tizen.
If Android ever goes sour once Googorola make their own devices Samsung still has an alternative. Yet another thing Nokia is missing out on while contemplating *their* windows phone strategy. The other day I saw two people buying iPhones and I was thinking, damn, this brand loyality is freaking me out: they could have just as easily gotten the GS3 which compared to the iPhone was:
These are the realities, certain people (with disposable income) don't want to bother about finding out about current technology and instead opt for being spoon fed. Apple has skillfully caged in that target demographic. The problem with WP is that is has a very similar target demographic, but with an inferior product. Samsung on the other hand utilizes the versatility of Android, refrains from locking it down and creates a barrage of products aiming at many different demographics from prince to pauper, techie to non-techie. With Maemo/Meego Nokia could have done this too, probably even better, but alas, their management were too closed-minded. |
