Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
I got a Nokia N950 as a gift from a relative (who works in R&D Nokia MeeGo development, India) on my last birthday, as he knew I was into Qt Development and after having used the N900, wanted a MeeGo device badly. Had lots of fun using it, until today, when it slipped from my hand and fell.
Now my problem is that the top layer of glass has cracked badly, although the touchscreen is as smooth as ever. I was wondering if any of you mates know where I could get a replacement for the glass, or does the whole display have to be changed? I tried at Nokia Care centre, but unfortunately, they couldn't help me out. So does only the top glass have to be replaced, or the whole display? Links where the parts are sold would be highly appreciated. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
I'm pretty sure the glass is fused to the display.
And I'm pretty sure repairs for the N950 are only available from Nokia in Finland (which means, you'll need to contact whoever gave you this to get it fixed) I would love to see the reactions of Nokia Care when they take in a device marked "Not for sale" though. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
Lucky Nokia Care didnt take the device from you!
|
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
Thanks for the replies.
Hurrian, are you sure that the repair job would be done in Finland? A relative of mine is a frequent traveller to Finland. So do you know where exactly in Finland the repair is provided? Finland is a big country lol! |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
any picture??
|
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
If it's anything like the N950s they gave out as part of the device program here, they won't bother doing the repair (it's not worth their time), developer relations will just swap it for a new one.
Whether you're eligible for this or who you have to go through is a different question - get back in touch with your relative and get him to ask up the chain. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
@lolloo, I'll upload the pictures soon enough. Although I don't really get why you want to see the pictures, as proof, or perhaps as some random troll who would like to laugh at others' pain. I do hope it's not the latter that applies to you.
@vitaminj, It's very difficult to get it swapped for a new one. There are a limited number of devices in the world. No more production is being done, and all the devices are already owned by developers across the globe. I doubt Nokia would have any pieces left with them in spare. I just need to know where to get it repaired. I am ready to pay for it lol. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
HAHA this is classic because you have chosen the wrong place to ask a question like that when you got hungry and very jelous i might add, wolves on here who will hate you for even having a 950,,, hohoho
But anyhow i wish you luck especially with Nokia ( am laughing here) because you just probably got your relative into deep shitt ...and will have to explain this one away hehe but on the bright side as your a dev i just hope you can show some good work to the maker and they just might let you have a new one,,, oh dear lol. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
Developer relations had a small cache of replacement units for this reason, they expect a certain defect/damage rate, and a handful of people from the device program here have already needed to take advantage of this.
As for replacement parts, I wouldn't see why they'd bother to keep them in stock or train staff on repair procedures, given the run of actual units was so small. You might be out of luck given the nature of this device if you don't have a channel to get it replaced. I can give you the email of the dev relation people via PM if you want, but I imagine they're going to ask some in-depth questions about where exactly you got the phone from and what you're using it for before they help you out. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
Have you thought about selling it for parts, then getting an n9?
I know it's not the same as what you originally hope, but it could be better than living with a broken device or having it taken from you by nokia. I'm sure you may find a few takers here on the boards. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
@vitaminj: dude, that would be really cool. Please do that, I'll wait for your PM. Thanks in advance! :)
@MINKIN2: The option isn't so bad either, but then again, I'd really say that owning a commercial device is different from owning a device that is so rare, and makes it a collector's item. I would rather stick to my broken N950, rather than go for a new N9; leave alone the "NOT FOR SALE. DEVELOPER DEVICE" branding on its back, the physical keyboard is a must have for me as I do most of the work on my phone itself, right from mailing to developing. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
@vitaminj : I am still waiting for that PM :)

Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
NOOOOO!!!! Why u do that?! I could sell me left leg for that phone. AND YOU DESTROYED IT?!
For serious, try to see if there's any spare parts.. Same sized panel... Isn't it quite close to the E7? UK-repair also claims to be able to fix that! http://uk-repair.com/repair-mobile/n...pair/3196.html |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(

so, n950 have slightli bigger "screen cover" than e7, but, i think it can be replaced with one from e7 and that speaker hole will be at same place (i didn't measured accurately) |

I did check for spare parts, and after a long search, this turned up ( http://www.mobilephone-spares.com/No...D-Display.html ). Since the supplier is a Chinese Exporter, I really doubt it would fit my N950, and also the seller asks to order a minimum of 5 pieces, which I've got no idea I going to do with, even if the screen fits. As far as UK repair is concerned, I live in India, and have no plans to visit UK anytime soon, and i will not be shipping a Developer Device to their repair center, lol. Quote:
I doubt there are any "screen covers" available out there as the glass is fused to display. I'll need to get the whole display (or perhaps the phone itself, as vitaminj suggested) changed. |

I would still contact the uk-repair and ask where they get their spares or do they sell one spare to you? I'm sure if you can get a spare-part, you can fix it! |

You have some Qt Development experience, that's great cos then you already have the skills to take part ;) But we accept entries from all experience, right through to beginners with their very first applications. In fact, we welcome beginners so much they even get their own extra category with 2 N950s especially assigned only to them :) If you're interested to know more check out the wiki via the Coding Competition banner on the top right hand side of the page, or by clicking here -> http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo.org_coding_competition_2012 We're still fleshing out the details, but we expect the competition to get started very soon. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
My n950's screen developed a lcd screen leak. Still usable but very annoying. Would be interested to know if you manage to get a replacement
|
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(

i doubt that nokia will even consider to replace your phone...especially since you didn't got it officially from nokia...but, you may try though... anyhow, i think that glass can be replaced with glass on nokia e7 at least partly, but bottom of screen and very top will not be covered... |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
It's unclear if for N950 the capacitive touchpanel aka 'glass' and the LCD(!)-display are fused together. For N9 this seems to be the case. It's also not obvious for that asian spare parts seller's part if it's the whole display module incl touchpanel, or only the LCD display
Nobody except OP knows terms applying to this particular case, as OP said his relative works at Nokia R&D, and - you know - usual DDP terms don't apply to Nokia R&D staff. my 2 cent /jOERG |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
ill buy those busted n950s =D
|
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
Most likely you wont find replacement displays anywhere, as the production of those were quite limited. So your best bet is your contacts with Nokia, and hope that they have extra displays or devices gathering dust in their tables :)...
or taking part to coding competition. |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
So is anyone willing to trade their N9 with a broken N950? :P
Pretty sure reply's gonna be no! ;) Anyways, if someone does come across anyone who repairs the N950s, let me know. I have mailed the Nokia guys, but haven't received any reply as of yet about any repairs/replacement. And as per their PL agreement, I doubt I can sell it. :( (But who said no to trading phones?) :P |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
No traders?!
Haha, I guessed so! :) |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
I will give you $20 for it.
|
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
i never seen the cracked screen around, is this for real? I mean maybe op has chinese n950 copycat, who knows
|
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
$25 is my bid :P

Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
For those who did not see the humor in my previous posts, I just wanted to see what a broken N950 is worth around here.
Now if the exchangee wants to give me a new and perfect N950 in mint condition, it's a different question altogether. Also, I own an N9, so wouldn't really care about having another one. Quote:
I can not believe that there are people who would buy a Chinese N950, and then start a new thread on Maemo.org just to cry about their broken Chinese ****. Especially not the people who develop for it. Still, if you want to see it, I'll attach the pics. Here you are.... The new N950 I got: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7073/7...039c5bf87e.jpg The cracked screen: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7093/7...0de5b437e4.jpg Another angle at it: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8141/7...516eb1b810.jpg Guess all you guys who wanted pics would be happy now. You couldn't help me earlier. You will not help me now, but just go "hahaha, a broken developer device" and other rubbish over a small mistake that every other person has done: dropping their device accidentally from their hands. |

Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
Now people, please be serious about it.
If someone on here knows where I can get it repaired, it would be great. Accidents happen. You just never know if they'll give you a bruise or a life threatening injury. |

There are many people here as well willing to buy my N950, but I can't sell it, as I might not have the sufficient rights to do so. If you could guide me to a person who might be able to repair it for me, it'd be great! Anyways, what's your asking price, for the record? |

Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
PM me your asking price, in case I can't get a replacement device/get it repaired from Nokia, I'll definitely know whom to contact.
Have you considered selling it for parts? If you are interested in selling the display+touchpanel part, do let me know, because that is the part that I am specifically interested in, as you can see from my pictures. I am willing to pay a decent price for it. |

Hi! I just want to know that if you have managed to get your broken device repaired. I also have a broken touch screen (just the front glass , the touch and TFT screen work well...) |
Re: Nokia N950 screen broke! :(
Nokia will replace your device for free if you are the original developer that received it (you'll need to send them the faulty device).
Just write an e-mail about it to the DDP address you that contacted you when you got it. |
