Android devices - severe price drops

Went to buy a N9 64GB today, but unfortunately the phone shop only had 16GB available. He'll order the device for me, need to wait 10days. When I asked for the N9 he immediately suggested I get a Nexus which to my surprise was the same price as a N9, 360 euros. GSII was 370 and GNote was 420. Is it just my country, or the prices have dropped significantly everywhere?

Where do you live and what shop was it?

They are giving away N9 everywhere. Wait longer and you will get it for free.

Macedonia, and a regular phone shop.

Here's a link where I first found it. Now the price is 360, but he'll drop it to 350 for sure ;)

As for the Galaxy Nexus, I guess I heard wrong about the price. It's 350 euros.

well my friend got a second hand cyan N9 for 120$ but virtually untouched and even wifi wasn't connected because there wasn't a pr 1.2 upgrade notification .

Now, that's luck.

Re: Android devices - severe price drops

That is lucky yeah.

Before I got mine I was eyeing up an "bricked" unit that went for £100, they can be had cheap but you need to be quick.

I got my 64gb for £290 shipped to the UK, now for an online retail outlet you would be hard pressed to find a 16gb for that over here. Not sure how they compare against the androids here though?

Just my thoughts but the galaxy nexus owns the n9 in almost all aspects.

I went to buy an N9, but got a Galaxy Nexus instead of it, mainly because of the fact that a single-core phone with a smaller screen is more expensive than an OMAP4460, 4.65" HD Super AMOLED with a STOCK Android 4.0.4 build. I immediately unlocked the bootloader/rooted it, and installed the Trinity 512MHz GPU kernel OC'ing to 1.67GHz.
The thing feels like a rocket ship within your hands.

Well let's be realistic a bit in here. What do you want from a smartphone? I mean, I know that Harmattan is a one son of a gun OS with all the open-source Linux goodies and so forth, but the device is just doomed to extinction. I lived the N900 experience, and without lying to you, when I see all the folks with their sparkling multi-core Android ICS handsets, I do feel like I'm from the 70s.

The Galaxy Nexus does just what all smartphones should be doing in the most perfect way ever, yet being one of the few most "open" stock Android handsets available.

Just look at the internals, the TI OMAP 4460, in terms of raw CPU compute power, blows all other mobile processors out of the competition, it definitely surpasses all dual-core CPUs available today in the market. The only negative side is the GPU, which is an the SGX540, but it is just powerful enough to operate all visual content including the most demanding games (Real Racing, GOF2, etc...) on this tough, lush 4.65" HD screen with A LOT of pixels to push at 50FPS, never below 40. You would notice that the stock I/O performance of the Galaxy Nexus is below average once trying it out, but this is where custom kernels jump in to save the day. I'm using the Trinity kernel with the SiO Scheduler activated and the I/O performance now surpasses all handsets. It's just a plain rocket-ship.

Now I know, that the OS is crappy JAVA codes built on a Linux kernel, true dat, but Android 4 is really different. ICS is really awesomely different than all of the past Android versions.

yes better cpu and gpu, i admit, and have massive support and fans too, but the OS is one step behind, its nokia fault that not continue to support maemo again, :(

Nokia always releases nice hardware without extensive support and instead stick to those "mass-appealing" low end Symbians with ARM11s...
Android with custom ROMs and kernels are open enough and I don't see a reason for waiting for Nokia's further MeeGo devices (AND TIZEN, I just know it will be history sooer than expected, even with Sammy's prototype GT-i9500) as they will be obsolete as long as Elop lives.

64 GB N9 goes for 350 euros on US Amazon.

Lumia 900 unlocked goes for 317 euros on US Amazon.

Brick and mortar stores are higher.

Nice, so they will have ability to encrypt spying on You using their 325345345 cores... While you will enjoy playing angry birds, or browsing web, which is *absolutely* impossible without 3543543 mhz GPU and mentioned cores ;)

Of course, to do any serious thing, You would still need N900, that with 600-900 mhz CPU and 256 RAM do circles around nexus-dupexus in terms of real life usability ;)

Enjoy Your new toy, nevertheless.

I have an n900, n9, galaxy nexus and a few other devices. I've been using Linux as my exclusive desktop for the past 8 years. I think I know what I'm talking about.

This is why you people on these forums cannot be taken seriously.
It's ok that fanboys spew out these replies all the time, but I didn't expect that from a council member.
What a joke.

Before I've moved to my N9 I was using lg p500 android - by no means a hi-end model. And I must strongly disagree with you. Real life usability, for 99% of the people, is calling, texting, emailing, web-surfing, playing Angry Birds and taking photos and maybe some GPS guidance.
And both of the devices (N9 and p500) can do that just fine. Of course, it is much more pleasant on N9, but it was not by any means a revolution for me.
And I'm pretty sure that overall experience (from the point of 99% people) of using N900 vs Nexus will be in favor of nexus (at least due to it's awesome, capacitive touchsreen).
If you think of hackability - well, I can agree that you can do more on N900, but this is not so called real-life usability for normal people. If I'm mistaken please by all means, enlighten me.

which aspect? Tell me? OS? The true geeky linux? Powerful software? Come on, android innovation = more core and ram, lol, they gonna say sorry you have to buy new device every OS updates comes, yes im a fanboy, event im an samsung employee, and android is nothing more than java bloating on the linux kernel, when you want to feel the real power of it you have to try top device, i say the truth, no offense, if you wanna texting, calling, browsing, games etc, why dont you get galaxy mini? Why have to get nexus? Why when you install angrybirds its asking permission to acces your phone? Its only game, lol, android=biggest spyware

Pardon me for being curious, but weren't you the one crying his butt off about N9 having an OMAP 3. What's up with the sudden change of heart?

I'm quite unsure what does this mean - would you care to elaborate?

Well, the simple answer is that some people prefer one over another, even though they will never use hardware to it's fullest.
I, for example, preferred my N9 over SGSII (same price when I was choosing my contract phone)- but I don't think it is extremely better than it. Just felt better for me. Fanboyism is foolish, because it blinds people and distorts perspective.

Oh, I LOVE this argument.

See, on Android at least you get a notification about what an app wants to access.

Do you have anything like that on MeeGo? No.

I secretly wish I had the time to write a small proof of concept app (a simple game maybe) that in the background collects all info it can on your beloved MeeGo phone. I bet it could have basically everything from your texts to your emails to your photos...

MeeGo has no app security whatsoever.

Also, did you know you can write apps in C for Android? Not everything is in Java there, you know.

It doesn't? Anyhow, how is this relevant? Some of android devices are really great pieces of hardware even if you don't like it - as N9 and N900 are great devices as well.
