I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
After using n9 for few months I decided to go back to n900.
Generally i have the feeling that n9 was big step back in comparison to N900. I liked design, bigger amount of ram and better processor was nice, but i have found n900 still impossible to beat in terms of usability and functionality. Main cons of n9 -no fm transmitter -Gui not bad, but not so comfortable as hildon, my finger was tired after using it. -Still lacks a lot of ported applications, some of them probably never will show on n9 (e.g. aircrack, preenv) -Processor is not so much better than overclocked n900 -not to good flash player -annoying stock browser -less storage than in n900 N9 pros: -internet radio application -design + lighter than n900 -better RAM+CPU So for me n900 is still best phone around:) Just want to share with my thoughts |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
I feel the same way. I have the N9 since February and the N900 since fall 2010.
N9 is a phenomenal device, both in design and UI. But the N900 has that "something". That "something" you can't easily describe in words. It is the most joyfull device to use imo. In 2012, it still delivers. I will use a Sega Dreamcast slogan: "It's thinking!" |

no fm-transmitter? You kidding, lol

totally different things the radio receives. the transmitter ...transmits *as for the memory, N900 has 32gb internal + you can put up to 64gb cards in it. so 32+64 = win |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
does N9 have microsd? N900 has 32 gb inside plus i beleive it can take 64gb microsdxc for a total of 96 GB

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
and starting comparison of maemo5 vs maemo6 'again'? I have both, and every series og maemo is cool!!, :D

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
I like the N9, but I pointed out the other day that the N900 has about five apps that help you create flashcards, the N9 has ZERO.
FBReader on the N9 is a fraud compared to the same program on the N900; for example there is no easy way to copy a word to look it up in a dictionary. |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
And don't forget, how much better is the N900 screen?
Look at all those non-distinguishable pixels forming a solid colour division! omg! :P |

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
I recently used my N900 for a day--just to see. It still holds up. I do love that device, and if something happened to my N9 I would go back to it and stay with it. But I have a working N9, so I don't. The big drawbacks for me (N900) are the less than vibrant screen, the 3G seems slightly slower, the stock browser is just old and Opera/Firefox are not better, the slow processor, & the lack of or half-assed portrait support.
But Maemo just makes more sense than Meego, the UI is perfect. And it's so flexible. I really miss some things. I almost wish I was forced to go back. I know--stupid. What I really want is a 7-inch tablet with the Maemo OS. I really do. |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
I have to agree on that. With hildon-desktop you could just view the running windows with Ctrl + backspace. I really miss that feature on harmattan. And n900 had tons of applications, hacks, tweaks. That fm transmitter feature was truly amazing. Harmattan has not that much to offer in therms of apps. Maemo was an open system harmattan is an isolated one (unless you have open-mode).

With the N900 I have to pull out the keyboard, press two buttons on opposite sides of the keyboard, and then many times either nothing happens at all, or there is a big delay before the grid of running apps is displayed. |

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
Well, it's well proven and known fact, that n900 does circles around N9/N950 in terms of real usability. Sure, it's ncie to have 1GB RAM - many people would sell they kindley to have it on N900 - but in terms of software/OS, N9/N950 hides ashamed.
Maybe, just maybe, it will change if qwazix & co will succeed with Fremantle compatibility layer in Harmattan (some programs are working already, they're also trying to run hildon-desktop on Harm) - availability of both super-big Fremantle programs base, and super-small Harm one, at the same time, with 1GB of RAM would be something worth considering... But, some flaws - like lack of microSD slot (unforgivable!), existing, but unconnected to antenna (and, probably, impossible to connect via DIY) FMTX, and crappy capacitive screen (applies only to N9) are non-fixable. Not to mention other - non critical, but irritating - things, like non-easily replaceable battery and goddamn monoblock body, or lack of hardware keyboard (both N9 only), forcing people to use bulky Iphone'ish bluetooth slide-out keyboards... Summarizing - welcome back to the world of livings :) Maybe, just maybe (again) Jolla won't fail to provide, but currently, N900 is unchallenged. /Estel |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
the internet radio was build into the media player on maemo

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
you cant even imagine what N900 is capable of ..It is something they call ''rare '' .N9 is just an other way around.

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
i feel both have their advantages and disadvantages but I love both of them!
N900: browsing, watching YouTube in browser!! Fm transmitter (still confuses my mates),multimedia, keyboard N9:brilliant phone, brilliant display, more RAM, better battery life |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
looking around the thread showed me that N900 is still a winner!!!
WOW! Can you (OP) please add a poll in the thread? |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
N900 wins, deal with it :P

On the software side things are less clear. The basic UI and functionality seems to work better "out of the box" in Diablo, but I do keep finding ways to customize the software in N900 to get it closer to how I'd like...which I certainly haven't been able to do with something like Android. btw...quick side question. Is there a keyboard shortcut to bring up the application menu? I seem to have poor luck at hitting the menu in the upper left portion of the screen on the first try. |

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
I feel the same.
The N9 I've had two months just feels like a phone, albeit one of the nicest phones I've ever used, but there's no real wow factor like the N900 had in terms of hacking and modding. |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
Same with me. I used an N9 for a few months after it was first released, but I went back to my N900 for good last month and haven't looked back.
The N9 is a beautifully designed device that "just works" as a phone. But using the N9 has also helped me come to realize that the majority of my time using a mobile is not actually spent on the phone. Thus, despite all of it's quirks (and some embarrassing letdowns in business situations), I still get more everyday utility from the N900 then I did with the N9. That's just my opinion based on my use case. Like I said, the N9 is a beautiful and powerful device, I just didn't get as much out of it as I do with the N900. |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
after all of this i wont buy an N9/50 :-D maybe just another N900 or an Android one ! ;)

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
Or a BB10 device ^
*if it turns out to be as good as it seems. |

Edit: Besides the already mentioned things that make the N900 better, such as the removable battery, removable storage, FM Transmitter, etc, I have to include the IR port. It is nice to be able to use the N900 as the remote shutter trigger for my K5 camera. |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
I have to agree with much of what has been said already. I have had my n9 since may and I still have not left my n900 with out any charge.
Yes the n9 has some some nifty features and boy is it bliss to use, but I do miss the customization of hildon. Has anyone else noticed how quite the Design board is compared to this time last year? The "show us your maemo5 desktop” thread used to be a regular feature in the active discussion panel. And whos idea was it to put the back button in place of the Enter button on the n9 keyboard?!?!? It's just wrong! ;) |

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
I want my nine screens back on the N9! They succeeded in forcing the sea of applications on us, which they also tried to do with the N900. But the N900 had flexible ways to allow us to use more and prettier screens. The N9 apparently doesn't.

Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
I have N9, N900, and Galaxy Note. Unfortunately the N9 is the odd man out and sits on a shelf collecting dust...

But I'd be happy to keep the UI and outer hardware pretty much exactly the same if I could just put some modern hardware inside. :) Back to the original topic. A couple of months back I was trying to decide what smartphone to get. I looked at several Android phones and then started to look at the N9 which seemed like an improvement over the Androids, the more I read though the more it seemed that while the N9 was probably better than any Android phone there was out there, it seemed that there was one phone that topped it in almost every way, except being a couple of years older. So I got the older phone. |

I've got some issues with the N900 (will only charge from a PC). I will probably send it in to be fixed, but I was wandering if the Note might be a decent replacement. |
Re: I upgraded phone from N9 to N900 and I'm happy
Funny you posted this. Same happened to me. My N9 is sitting on the desk, its SIM tray empty, while N900 is in my hands and giving me so much more pleasure. I just hate typing on N9, no matter what people say, HW keyboard is the best, and the fact that you can use keyboard shortcuts...mmmmmmmmmm....its better than porn
