N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

Hello folks.. My N9 black 16GB works like a charm. I have set up my home wifi network to 'Use Automatically' on my N9. But occationally when I try to connect my N9 to my home WiFi, (when its disconnected while being outside), the connection fails and I get a prompt msg on my N9 "Something's wrong with the network connection". The only solution I have for this, is to restart my Network Router and re-connect my N9 to WiFi, and it connects immediately fine and perfect. But i need to know the rootcause and want a permanent solution for this. So I dont have to restart my internet connection/router everytime.

Would appreciate a kind support here...

About my product:

Nokia N9 - Meego 1.2 Harmattan
Version - PR 1.2
Black 16GB

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

update it to pr1.3 as its been widely reported that issues with WiFi connectivity do get fixed in pr1.3

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

Thanks for your prompt reply.. 'thedead1440'

PR1.3 still not available in my region UAE via OTA. Does it mean, I have to rely on my remedy of restarting my WiFi connection, untill PR1.3 is out here... I am not having a hardtime as of now, as I have my Laptop to use the internet at home, but just curious if 1.3 will really resolve this. I wll be more than happy then :)

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

i cant guarantee this but that's whats in the changelog...on my device i've realized that wifi detection is better and the cut-off distance is now longer than before...you can simply flash your device with pr1.3 if its not available OTA...

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

Hi, PR1.3 is out in UAE, but through Nokia Suite. It will wipe out everything, so yeah, better to wait for OTA update. It should be there by now though.. But just a thought.. Since I had the same problem.. Are you using a Linksys router? They sometimes have such issues.. And other devices are affected by a "Limited Network" or "No internet Access" problem. If the router isn't the problem, then yeah, best to wait for PR 1.3.

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

Thanks for the replies..

Yes, as 'thedead1440' mentioned, the global feedback says about betterment in Network Connectivity for PR 1.3 update.

As 'flopjoke' stated, I should wait for OTA, as I m not very much OK with flashing my device. But I m pretty sure, I dont have Linksys router. Though will check on it...

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

Try using static IP for your wi-fi connection. Use your laptop to get the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, etc by typing ipconfig/all in a DOS box. The IP address should change the last digit as devices cannot share the same IP add. but the rest can copy as it is.

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

Hi Folks... I have got a secondary remedy for my issue which I posted under this blog about a WiFi error. My N9 was giving me this error when I try to connect it to my main network router like I have connected my Laptop. So applying a simple logic, that my Laptop works perfectly fine to connect to the main router, I have created a Ad-hoc or WiFi hotspot in my Laptop which is discoverable by other WiFi devices like PC, Laptop and Mobiles.

.... Now my phone is connected to my Laptop network via Ad-Hoc sharing option.. and works much faster as the laptop is much closer than the router.... Now I can patiently wait for PR 1.3 hoping it wil still fix the WiFi and Connectivity bugs..

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

I have been having the same problem, tried both static and changing IP's.
The thing I found to be wrong with it for me is going out of range of the network whilst connecting. I found that was stuffing it up, whilst if I turn it off before I leave I can connect back with no problems.

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

I also get an error along those lines with my N9, and I'm on PR1.3, didn't report this as it didn't really bother me much as fixing it is a simple Modem reboot, but that sucks if other devices are connected, eg someone playing online on PS3, you have to wait till they done. It happens to me EG when I leave the house and the phone switches to 3G, go to the shops come back, WIFI no longer connects, modem has to be rebooted. I use a Netgear Router DG834GU, funny part is I visited my friend over the weekend, had Pool Party Outside, from the Pool I couldn't get signal to his router, but everytime I went back in the house it connected flawlessly, and he uses a cheaper modem than mine! This has to do with my Wireless Settings on Router I suppose, but my wife doesn't have this problem!

Hey that's exact what happens in my case and the reboot of the router connects the device. But sometime (ca. 50%) when I come home it connects immediately. And what kind of router is it? Netgear DG834G

Ok... so since I am on PR 1.2 for now and I have Sagem-com router with model no. 1704 or 2704, what is the best solution for me to get the Internt running on my N9 without any interupption or error...

I have a Cisco linksys ADSL router in my house and i also have this problem. However, with some other routers i don't i guess its because of some kind of a compatibility issue. And it is annoying for me for sure !!

I've been observing the same problem. It usually occurs when the N9 is at the very edge of wifi-range from the router and looses connection and reconnects (several times). Sometimes this cycle leads to the error "network problem" and the N9 will not connect to the router (a Draytek Vigor 2910) anymore.

I've found the issue has become less prominent with PR 1.2 but it is still there with PR 1.3, albeit it has become rare (I haven't run into it for more than a week as of now and i've been using PR 1.3 since it came out and haven't experienced more that 2 or 3 incidents).

I'd have to do further testing but apparently when the situation occurs the router does not only refuse connection by the N9 but also by other devices, which makes me wonder if it's really the N9 which is at fault.

(If it's your own network) the only ASAP solution is a WLAN range extender.

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

I have other devices also running on same wifi router, like Samsung GT mobile, and Laptops. All is well. But my N9 is sick here... Since day one i started facing this issue, I am just wondering one thing... What makes my N9 to be connected to my Wifi router ON RESTARTING THE ROUTER ????

Whats the catch here.. Whatever router I m using, it does not deny to connect to my N9.. It does connects at times.. But how does it works on restarting the router. (though it gives same error after few hours or few days)

Restarting helps, but I cant keep doing it all the time.. Thats not the remedy.. I wanted to get this sorted out once and for all.....

This thread is getting very interesting I must say....
Though I have activated a data package plan on my mobile and paying for it as I love my N9.. I would hope this gets resolved....

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

I got this problem since my brother got his Galaxy Nexus Last Week, at first I thought it was caused by his device hogging the bandwith but after looking for a solution and trying different things (like manually setting the IP on device and router) this is what worked for me on PR 1.1:

1.- Delete the access point (the network connection for your WIFI) on your N9.
2.- Restart your router (only this time it will be necessary).
3.- Edit your Networks on N9, look for your SSID, use Easy Configuration, the One Click or One Button Option on both your Router and N9.
4.- Let the connection happen, it may take a while.

For some reason this worked when manual config failed, I had never used this option before since I had no need for it.
My guess for why other devices seem to work and N9 fails to connect is that it somehow gets stuck trying to get the last IP it had used, even when you manually configure another one, and the router trying to give it another one is what causes the error. At least this is what I could gather from the router logs.

One last thing, I don't know if this matters or not but after I deleted my network connection I got the device to try and use another restricted Wifi network that appeared in my vicinity, just to see if that would clear the IP address thing and then I did the One Button setup from the router.

Edit: I did this a week ago and have not had any more trouble nor had to restart my router since then, even if my brother is connected to the network.

Dear Michael.... Appreciate your support here..
I wish if you can elaborate the 3rd step in detail about 'looking for SSID, and One Click or One Button Option'.
What exactly I should do on my N9 and the router to get it done ?
Since I m not so tech-savvy, still would like to explore and resolve this with your help....

Thanks again......

Nowadays most WiFi Routers have a button either on the top or the side that allows you to set up a new connection without having to enter your WAP o WEP password on your mobile device. This is often called Push-Button-Method or One Push Setup, it varies( you can search for WPS on google to learn more about this).

On N9 go to Settings--->Internet connection--->Connect To internet--> Wait for your network to appear-->Select it,
If the Push-Button-Method is supported/allowed by your router it will give you that option along with another PIN method option, or you can skip Easy Configuration entirely by setting up you preshared WAP or WEP key.
Now, you must push the button on your router (or activate the function via the web UI) and then select the Push-Button-Method on N9 as well, this will create the connection for you.

The one problem you might encounter with this is that not every router has this option enabled because of security reasons (when this happens the N9 skips this entirely and only gives you the option to enter the WEP/WAP Key) and there are still some that don't support it but most linksys i have seen do support it.

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

Hi.. I was waiting desperately for PR 1.3 OTA update on my N9 here in UAE, partcularly to get rid of this Connection issue of
"Something's wrong with the network connection".

Finally yesterday I got the update and have updated PR 1.3 successfully which gives now much more improvements and bug fixes.

But my issue still remain the same. My N9 was connected to my home Wifi where I have my Laptop also connected, but just now all of a sudden the Connection was lost and while re-connecting I got the same above error. I am pretty much sure, this caused when my N9 goes out-of=coverage of Wifi network, meaning cuts out of it.

Otherwise If I manually switch it off while going out of home, I was able to connect it again when I m back home. But problem arises whenever I m at home and it goes out of network and cuts-off from network...

The above post before me seems to be helpful But i m not good at it....

Any help will be appreciated... Guys..

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

After observing for few months, I have noticed that this error
"Something's wrong with the network connection" is caused whenever my home network signal gets cut-off from the range.

While re-connecting, it will give the same above error msg.
And only on restarting the network router, I m able to re-connect to my home network. Due to this I have to activate the mobie data package to use if Wifi doesnt work.

But still no idea what technical issue is causing this error....

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

Its due to the n9's lousy wifi range...

Also it could be your network is acting up...I had the same issue regularly...Called my ISP over and after they changed the access point it works well now...

Hi..

What does "changing access point" actually means. ?
What should I mention to my ISP precisely when I call them for same.. ?

Re: N9 WiFi error : "Something's wrong with the network connection"

Matt i feel your pain. Ive had this issue since day one :-(

Ive followed this site religiously, but never had much to say so ive only registered now.

As Matt has pointed out, the Wifi works flawlessly so long as you stay within range. The second the phone loses its connection with the router (eg: i leave my house to go to varsity) when i return home, and the N9 is back within range of the network, it refuses to connect again.

The Wlan is seen, but on attempting to reconnect i get the error "there is something wrong with the network connection"

the only solution is to restart the router.

Ive tried every possible combination of settings on my router. to no avail. This issue is crippling for me. from where im from (South Africa) 3G data-costs are terribly expensive and my devices live on Wifi connections. With this wifi problem, my N9 was unusable.

ive sadly moved onto a Galaxy Nexus purely because of it. :-(

i still love my N9 and every day i Google this issue with bated breath in hopes for a fix. The day i find a solution for this, my Nexus will become a paperweight

Ps: i have tried the WPS button thingy mentioned above, but still, the problem persists...oh, and sorry for the long post :)

PPS: this is definitely not a hardware issue. ive tried reproducing this bug in Nitdroid and it just isnt an issue. The wifi in nitdroid works 100%. so this is certainly something to do with Harmattan
