N950 with really old firmware

Who is interested, i made video of my n950 that i got today, as it has weird old firmware:
No ovi, icons as history in browser and few more different things.
Apps there as well all were preinstalled.
Anyway, here is video:

Edit:

Could that be R&D mode?

Re: N950 with really old firmware

No, it's Pre-Beta 1 (beta1 being 1.2011.22-6), R&D mode is just a flag in CAL

Edit: Actually it seems post beta1 and pre beta2, an unreleased image.

What do you mean by just a flag in CAL... Will flashing R&D mode give us any extra functionality?

btw when i mount it on comuter i have cities(i think it's for ovi maps), core-dump(that one is empy) and SDK(with tools for mac, win and linux) dirs. if needed can give files.

i'm gonna check repos as well and wonder what is this core-dump and how what is the use.

I kind of got overexcited when I thought it was pre-beta1, but now that it's just between two public images it's nothing useful, just an unreleased image. core-dumps is the dir where, (duh) core-dumps, are placed when an application crashes.

Dirs are all the same as beta1.

CAL is /dev/mtd1, a config partition that's read by NOLO (the bootloader) and occasionally by the system, it stores stuff like IMEI, current SW version, all flashes done to the device, signed certificates, lock code (at least on the N900) and R&D mode flags. When R&D mode is on, the hardware keyboard flashes according to kernel messages, and when some flags are set, some things are handled differently.
no-lifeguard-reset prevents reboots because of software (like what happened in the mt-toggles thread today).
no-omap-wd prevents the hardware WatchDog from rebooting the device if it isn't pinged (this was useful in N900 times to run a custom OS like Ubuntu without pinging the WD).

You can read about R&D mode here, http://wiki.maemo.org/R&D_mode
It's mostly unchanged

Maybe we can extract that and make it work for us :)

ZogG, i need files from /lib/modules/current/*.*
or if you can give me full root.img that would be best

Meh, I stand corrected, 22-6 vs 15-7 are week numbers, not days, it's pre beta1.

Now what does having pre beta 1 stuff mean for us as a community?

Nothing at all, it's not like there's a jailbreak that was blocked by beta1 or something :P
It's just old software.

I wonder if the N950 is the 32GB, 512MB RAM, 12MP model though...

Also, there was an option to change user agent string on the web browser can it be used in the N9's we have today or somehow ported to work for us?

32GB N950 with less ram? Damn Meego-Harmattan must be amazingly efficient then :)

Lock code is also stored there in Harmattan devices. Other stuff that is stored there are for example the "open mode warning" and MALF logos (if the system language changes, these files are written from the filesystem to the CAL area). Flashing open mode makes CAL read-only (see the Open Mode Warning Removal Thread). Once it's in open mode, one has to flash a complete stock image for CAL to become read/write again. That is also why you can't set a lock code after flashing open mode (because the new lock code can't be written to CAL).

I've figured out the custom user agent trick - I'll see about packaging it up, or at least writing a HOWTO, later this week. :)

This will be way easier than hacking away at the grob binaries, which seems to be the current usual solution.

This is very welcome, this is one of the things the native browser is missing, firefox is just to sluggish but as of now the only choise unlees you go for a hacky way.

The recently released Opera 12 can change the user agent to a set of premade ones (default, S60, Android, MeeGo and Desktop). No custom user agent though.

Thanks I'll try Opera 12 out.

Only used firefox for flash and some speciffic web sites where I changed the user agent for better browsing or get it to work at all.
