Introduction to Opera Mobile Labs for N9

Hi everyone,

I've put together this post to update you on the latest changes. As you may already know Opera Mobile for the N9 is slowly brewed in the Opera Labs by my fellow mad scientist Mostyn Bramley-Moore and I. It's unsupported, buggy, and may at any time scare your pets. Things that do not work, and probably never will are:
  • Flash plugin
  • HTML5 video and audio
  • WebGL
  • Geolocation
  • Native on-screen keyboard (We're working on it, but who knows when it will be finished.)
  • N950 hardware keyboard integration

Changes specific to the N9 port:

Changelog for 11.50.21:
Changelog for 11.50.22:
  • Fix for Ovi Store in China.

Changelog for 12.00.2:
  • Update to version 12, overview of new features.
  • Removed bundled Droid fonts, switched to using Nokia Pure Text.
  • Suspend scripts, animations, etc. while in background to save power.

Changelog for 12.00.6:
  • Opera can now be set as default in Settings, Applications, Web, Default browser.
  • Fixed display of CJK and Indic fonts in title bar and other UI elements.
  • Fixed user-agent header to properly indentify as Linux instead of (null).
  • Removed broken native on-screen keyboard support.

Update 2012-08-01

Changelog for 12.00.8:
  • Fixed suspend when in background.
  • Fixed MIME types preventing images from opening in the gallery.
  • Enabled custom user agent setting in opera:config.
  • Fixed user agent to correctly identify as a mobile device.

Update 2012-10-18

See the Android announcement for details on whats new in Opera Mobile 12.1. As usual not all new features may be present in the N9 version.

Changelog for 12.1.1:
  • Fixed Opera Turbo off when on WiFi setting.
  • Fixed display of simplified Chinese in in title bar and other UI elements.
  • Added Cantonese, Finnish, Kazakh, Malay, Persian, Romanian, Slovene, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese translations.

We're aware of the problem and hope to get it fixed, however the Ovi Store process can be slow at times so I don't know how long it'll take.

ohrn another question is there any possibility of the n9's status bar being shown...currently opera takes up the full screen...can an option be added to toggle this?

thanks.

Probably not, it's a limitation when using "standard" Qt widgets. To save work we use the desktop emulator as a base for the N9 port since it too uses Qt, however that means MeegoTouch or QML is out.

Latest update removed all those great User Agents. Give us them back ;)

Working Native VKB would be great.

Thanks for your efforts on this small platform!

We have currently no plans to do a native port of Opera Mini. You'll have to try your luck with the J2ME version.

Do you guys need a N950 for the rotation lock when you slide the keyboard out?

This is the only thing that the N950 needs to get the perfect browser!

I don't know where to report bug so i just post it here.

Opera Mobile using 100% of CPU when running on background, as you see from the screenshot. The app currently running are just opera, screnshotmee & performance meter so it is probably cause by opera. When i try to run other apps at this state it will be extremetly laggy or even not responding. Closed the app & everything retured to normal.

It doesn't happen on every site though, I browsing html5test.com at that time.

Everyone else experince this or just me?

To be fair....
The N950's such a tiny % of the Maemo 6x user-base it's not funny, & they've got minuscule resources as is.
They should be focussing on stuff that benefits both the N9 & N950, nothing esoteric for the N950.

ohrn, I would like to thank you for making Opera available for the N9! I understand this must be a labor of love; and while not perfect, it is a wonderful option for the N9 which I use often.

If I could import my bookmarks from FF, I could delete that and just use Opera. :)

Well, it shouldnt be hard to just implement the 'if keyboard is slide open' function....

I em using actualy opera v.12006, then i just happen to visit the m.opera.com with existing opera browser from my N9 and i got option on screen...opera labs v11.5 for Meego, so i guess this one has the native keyboard option on it, or not the same as the developer version...let's try?

Best web app no doubt. But I just noticed an issue with the latest version. If you use any file manager (file manager, filebox, etc.) you're unable to open pictures through the file manager. After I unistalled the app I was able to open the picture. It's very reproducible as I have repeated the bug multiple times.

That's the old version. No native keyboard support since day one for the N9 - of course v12.0.2 somehow had one although a buggy one :D

Yes, i understand that sir, but before i was newer able to se and download opera from opera-labs site...rather than only from ovi.store...i mean this is good hope for meego comunity that the opera.labs is taking care for opera.meego.version to....so it is good idea that all meego users if they use wifi or so to make downloads to opera labs...so they can see the comunity is alive and apealing for opera.

Actually the .deb installer of version 11.50.21 has been available for download from the opera website since it first came out - before it even came out in ovi store. Perhaps you just missed it...

I can confirm that since version 12.00.02 there is a significant battery drop using Opera Mobile in background compared to the prior versions, depending on the open websites. A fix is welcome.

For me OM is the best browser out there for the N9. Thanks for supporting our "small" community.

Re: Introduction to Opera Mobile Labs for N9

With opera browser is allways problem with Disqus and loogings, takes ages to load, sumetime will show it, sumetime does not...and hangins...
If your turbo settings are set 'automatic of when on wifi' and then u use sumetime on GPRS...watch for data load, you better set it on or off...bcz it seem it does not recognise GPRS corectly.

Thanks! I can find the update in the Hong Kong store.
But I am afraid Hong Kong Store and China Store is separated.

Possible bug?

In a SMS that contains a HTML-link long tap on the link to get presented with a choice of the installed browsers to launch it with. Selecting Opera does nothing on my N9. Does it work for you?

This might explain why i can't open received image on Wazapp/open image using Filebox...i'll give this a shot.

EDIT : Yes, I confirmed that Opera is giving this problem

Re: Introduction to Opera Mobile Labs for N9

Is it just me or Opera is either on par or better than the stock browser lately, I find myself using more & more of it lately, I like the tool bar, everything is just there, deleting history and all is so cool. Plus it view Full Version of Facebook flawlessly. I love the Keyboard too, it's more Precise, Accurate & Responsive than the stock one for me, I click less of the "Back Space" button than on Stock one. Only problem still trailing behind is the touch responsiveness in the sites, EG, the stock App responds better clicking smaller buttons, like when on this Forum and U wanna view next page by clicking page number, the stock one manages to respond to these numbers more accurately, with Opera U need to zoom way in to make them respond, other than that if this gets fixed I'm gonna make Opera Default.

Firefox, I simply hate this Mobile Browser.

WTF??? Just after I spoke highly of it, I got an update and now Facebook only views mobile format, DAMN!! Ok this sucks!

2. Fixed MIME types preventing images from opening in the gallery.
3. Enabled custom user agent setting in opera:config.
4. Fixed user agent to correctly identify as a mobile device.
As you can see in point 4 - user agent is fixed to correctly identify as mobile browser. So you are redirected to FB mobile site. But as you can see in point 3 - you can set up custom user agent.

Re: Introduction to Opera Mobile Labs for N9

While I thank the two devs for their work on Opera 12 for our "dead" platform, am I the only one here who prefers the stock browser's no-frills approach...

I mean as much as I like Opera syncing all my speed dials and ability to open tabs, the better text-wrapping of the stock browser (e.g. opening this page on the stock browser and double-clicking it will give you a zoomed in view of the whole dialog box while Opera will zoom the text but you have to scroll to view the whole dialog box of every reply), speed, visibility of the status bar, default keyboard, ability to hack it to iOS/Android UA (which i think can now be added using 12.0.8 of Opera) and more precise selection make it my daily driver...

I would like to hear from some other people on why Opera is their preferred choice compared to the stock browser...

Re: Introduction to Opera Mobile Labs for N9

Compared to stock browser
+ bookmarks
+ downloading, stock browser doesnt let choose folder and seems to randomly choose between .tmp and Downloads, clearing Transfers with stuffs in .tmp will also remove them from memory.
+ clearing history, cookies, user/pass can be done separately
+ save page for offline reading, I use this alot
+ speed dials
+ tapping multiple links results in zoomin with links highlight.
- keyboard, tapping Shift = Caps Lock and no tacticle feedbacks
- rotation in every direction, wish I could disable it or having opera to follow orientation lock like glol.
- audio, video

Eventhough I like Opera but right now my main browser is still stock due to keyboard and audio/video support.
