Replacing Stock Facebook! and Maybe Twitter

Is there a way to make fMobi or Sociality take over from the stock facebook app?

OR Qnuptunea taking over from the stock twitter app?

Such as opening up contacts facebook/twitter links OR when we click on something from the Feeds screen?

I would prefer fMobi to open up everything facebook related as it is just the most feature full facebook client we have for our phones ATM, although Sociality will most likely end up being the best when everything is finished!

This idea is similar to have a different default browser, possibility of a default facebook/twitter app to view tweets or friends statuses?

Was afraid that would be the answer :(

But it seems like there is a way, do you have an idea of what that way is? Without having to wait for a CSSU where we can just rip the stock facebook/twitter out of the OS and put a working client in their place?

Its only software so everything is doable. Wait for xx years for someone to leak the source codes, and spend few months recoding all the xx places where the functionality is integrated. I would say that its never going to happen. But of course you have 0.0001% chance for it happening, and of course you can just binary patch xx places after you have spend few months reading/reverse engineering decompiled assembly codes.

Ill just take that as a no then.

Have to see what CSSU brings, if there is a CSSU for the N9.

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook!

Socialty or fMobi can do this.Third party softwares can organize event feed (i mean adding something) but you can't do this via settings.Because that feature is connected to Nokia's facebook client.

But both of this softwares are cross-platform.So developers had to work on it to make it compatible with Harmattan's event feed.

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook!

Sociality (MTF) is no way cross platform, the Harmattan version is a full UI rewrite in MeeGoTouchFramework, with some of the backend code carried over from Fremantle and hugely optimized.

Yeah I thought so :(

No reason to be disappointed, it can integrate on the events view, but there are other parts to work on before that.

The events view isn't really my priority, I would just like Sociality to be able to handle all the facebook triggers from the rest of the OS.

Can't stand that poor excuse of a facebook client Nokia built in :(

Technically one could hijack DBus and intercept whatever it's sending to the stock app and handle it in Sociality, but that's not my speciality, maybe ask qole ;)

Hmmm that is a good idea!

The only thing needed to happen for this to work is to STOP the stock facebook interfering and opening along with Sociality :p

Ill drop Qole a lil message to pop on this thread and see if he can provide any insight :)

Same applies for Twitter, how do I switch the Stock one for Qneptunia and still get Twitter update on Feed Screen / Events View? Tired of getting one message twice. Sorry to Hijack Godofwar!

can't you just disable the built in twitter account? isn't that a viable way to replace facebook too -- just have the app write to the events view and disable the existing one from updating it?

Yeah, its jusa case of asking the Developer of Sociality (MAG) an the developer of Qneptunea to implement such a feature.

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook!

You can delete your Facebook account on Accounts application and minimize sociality.Sociality is not depend on your Facebook account on Accounts. It would disable the stock Facebook's feeds.

I didn't use Qneptuna but that would be great some feature like running daemon on background and adding feed to events.

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook!

I saw this thread yesterday and I was wondering about using symlinks or similiar to do this.

I.E. replacing /usr/bin/facebook-meego or /usr/bin/facebook-starter or /usr/bin/Facebook with a symlink that points to the fmobi binary.

As I see it this has a potential problems in the OS executing a command such as /usr/bin/Facebook some-command and fmobi not knowing that command. But the limit of my knowledge was coming up with this idea, I'd be willing to help experiment if someone will point me in the right direction if this is even possible.

Only problem with that is that the UI is CLOSED source :(

so we can't do any such editing :(

Why not simply delete the stock facebook from your phone, and use an alternative app that sends notifications to the feed, etc.?

Nope as that's called Piracy and is illegal both real world law and forum rules!

Go to nokia store and get the 7-day free trial or buy it.

I have not a single bit of knowledge about the dbus system in Fremantle. Honestly, I haven't really opened the hood much at all. I use my device as a phone, a camera, and a GPS. I confess that I don't even use Debian apps any more.

Maybe if Jolla makes an open device that invites hacking like the Maemo devices did, my curiosity and excitement will return.

Awesome!

Now does anybody know if the Qnuptunea developer lives on these forums?

Maybe we can get him in on this as well and then we can get both a great facebook client (sociality) and a great twitter client (qnuptunea)

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook! and Maybe Twitter

IMO tweetian is a better option with a livelier dev who is attempting to push to events feed and add multiple accounts support...

OTOH, QNeptunea for the uninitiated costs over $10!

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook! and Maybe Twitter

I don't know much about Twitter, I only use it as a kind of newspaper using French newspapers' Twitter accounts (I guess I could do it better with RSS feeds, but have not tried yet), but I like Tweetian as well and I remember that the dev is considering pushing tweets to the Events screen. And it's free.

I really like Qneptunea's interface

Pssst. Just go on the google code page and download the deb of Qneptunea for free LOL

It is publicly there, just to get it through Nokia Store it costs that :p

I wont link to it here, but google can be your friend ;)

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook! and Maybe Twitter

Sent an email to the Qneptunea dev, we will see what he says and he might possibly post back here :)

Feel free to refer the tweetian dev to this thread so he can give his input though!

The more options the better, and MAG might be able to help him with code or vice-a-versa ;)

Ohh LOL

Well I don't see many or ANY of them sticking around for the N9 to be in a CSSU stage, they will all sod off to buy the new android or iOS device in a year or probably less :p

thedead1440 2012-08-14 17:12

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook! and Maybe Twitter

Well I'm sure they'll stick around...you see nowhere else can they find a community like ours which will answer to the Billionth person asking/requesting the same thing :p

Even if they leave they'll end up back for this reason...After seeing so many of them I'm even more sure about this :p

Awesome ! Should Sociality daemon run on background for this or you hacked dbus and replaced stock app ?

MohammadAG 2012-08-14 17:33

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook! and Maybe Twitter

It needs to run in the background, the way the event feed works is by using URI schemas (just like iOS does app-from-app switching), so you define a schema and let your app handle it.

In my case, I used sociality://.
I post has the URI sociality://post/POST_ID_HERE.
Since I implemented URIs for this, I added sociality://profile/PROFILE_ID_HERE(/albums|friends).
So linking to those will open the respective part in Sociality.

I might go ahead and implement the fb:// schema, so Harmattan and iOS behave the same (for QR Codes or otherwise).

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook! and Maybe Twitter

Can't you just have it run every time the news feed is refreshed?

First of all, congrats on your great work :) With dev's like you it seems N9 can live forever. Now, my question,

How does that reflect on battery life? I know not of how iOS fb handling reflects on their battery and how that would translate to harmattan.

MohammadAG 2012-08-15 14:32

Re: Replacing Stock Facebook! and Maybe Twitter

Running in background shouldn't impact battery life a lot.
You can test impact by opening Sociality, tapping news feed and leaving it in background.

Sociality will also have a start minimized option, useful for auto start.

This is how the news feed looks now, it looks very close to stock.
http://i.imgur.com/HLWfr.png

I'll release it as soon as I polish it (hopefully tomorrow or the day after)

I don't know if i am alone on this one, but i like this blue and white text version more :). It's look so clean, but other can be like the stock one! http://i.imgur.com/cRFjl.png
