[Call to arms!]

Alright chaps, the bugle has sounded and the call has been made. We need a developer device, an N900 that is. Maemo developer zeq is rather shy so you may not have heard of him. He has however been critical in getting the next phase of N900 madness off the ground. I am of course referring the holy grail, the big kahuna, the future of cSSU...Thumb2!

Working tirelessly behind the scenes, zeq and FMG have been for the past few months building a new N900 toolchain that brings the speed and power of libgcc4.7.2, thumb2 and linaro to our mighty N900s. In addition to this they have been porting fennec v17 to the N900. Only by the power of thumb (and porting the QT gui as well) is fennec now actually getting to a usable state. It is so good in fact some alpha testers have described it as 'better than fennec on android with 1.5GHz dual core processors and 1GB of ram'.

Anyway, zeq; godbless his little cotton socks needs an N900 to develop on. This can be solved in 1 of 2 ways.

1. YOU donate him your old (fully working!) N900.
2. We have a fund raising drive to purchase one on his behalf.

I do not really expect option 1 to work. That leaves 2. So if we all pledge to chip in a small amount, ANY amount we can buy him a second hand one. We have 2 donors already.

I know this will work because you may recall we banded together to overcome such obstacles before. Do you remember the davyp donation drive that facilitated the creation of a native j2me environment for the n900?

We can do it again guys!

20 euro - Joerg 'docscruntiniser' rw
20 euro - Vi_
10 euro - Nicolai
10 euro - Ernedorn
5 euro - bingomion
5 euro - thedead1440
40 euro - StefanL
--------------------

Total = 110 euro

MIssion accomplished!

We have enough! Thank you to all those who have pledged! I have sent out PMs with my paypal address to collect the money.

I'll chime in with 15 bucks, provided I can wire them somewhere within the EU. Not interested in paypal and stuff... ;)

I pledge 10€ too.

Thank you, all donations greatly received.

However can you specify a currency? (I am assuming euros however I need to be clear).

Unfortunately we are relying on paypal as there is not really any viable alternative. Unless of course you can suggest one?

5Euros from me too...

Re: [Call to arms!]

I can give $50.00. I would give him my spare N900, but the back cover magnet under the stand is missing, which disqualifies it from being a fully functional N900.

I need to check, but it might be free for some of us (possibly me for example) to do a direct bank transfer (at least inside the euro zone).

I don't know how much paypal charges, and more importantly if there are security issues with giving your iban to someone you don't know.

I'd be happy to wire it to one of the other well-known donnors so they can paypal it together with their donation. Sorry for being a pain. :)

Well in the UK we can do bank->bank transfers for free. All that is needed is account number, sort code and a little trust!

It's supposed to cost as much as national transfers, so it's free to e.g. wire from Germany to within the EU.

Re: [Call to arms!]

I wish I was so good/useful that my contributions incited people to work to get me devices. But I choose compersion over jealousy, so yay for the people who are.

Now that Stefan has thrown in $50 (USD I presume, I think some other countries use a dollar sign too), does that cover it, or are we still in need of more funds?

Maybe within Euro area? Or depending on which bank? Because last time I wired some money to Sweden (and I had to pay in Swedish kronor) my bank charged me a lot (payment in Euro would have been cheaper but still cost something).

Re: [Call to arms!]

Hotdog we have a weiner! For the princely sum of 100 Euros, a friend of gregoranderson Has offered his second hand N900. Which means, stop pledging money now!

We have collected 110 euros. In less than an hour. You guys rule.

The extra 10 will go towards shipping. Any remaining funds will be sent back to StefanL as he is the biggest donor.

The crazy thing is, it turns out gregoranderson and I live in the same city! So when I have collected all the loot I will go and see him personally and claim the N900. I will then solder the USB port down and flash it. I will then mail it to Zeq (who lives in the same country as me).

To all those who donated, thank you! Rest assured you will see big benefits coming to cSSU as a result of this.

I will now PM all the donators with my Paypal details and collect the funds.

Absolutely gorgeous! Especially, that it's second time. Now, who is going with me to convince vi_ to candidate for Council on next election, as he already proved to be good organizer?

Re: [Call to arms!]

It's time to let go of mine. I haven't used my N900 in anger for months (barely had time to fart, frankly) and for the forseeable future, I have no hacking time - therefore I see little point in me keeping hold of it if there's somebody else out there who could benefit.

Flashed it last night and installed CSSU-Thumb and marvelled at what has been achieved.

Is there an appetite for another fund-raiser if there's a need for another developer unit?

This one has been mine since new - back to Nokia once proper for a mainboard replacement after it stopped doing handovers when moving between cells.

No problem since it was fixed. Batteries could both do with being replaced (infact, I think they were both ex-5800 cells from ebay - official nokia batteries though and the original one gave up the will to retain charge).

Any thoughts?

Do I understand correctly, that You're willing to donate it for some developer? Or do You mean fund-rising for buying it from You?

I hope that you don't take this question as offensive - it just wasn't clear from Your post, that's why I'm asking :)

No offense taken. It is clear to me that there is little I can do with my N900 now and so there is no point holding onto it. My role on maemo.org has mostly been offensively cynical, with a minor role in Unixy shite so there is no loss to the community itself either.

So, if I can get a modest sum for my N900 and it goes to someone who will use it, then I will be happy. Something akin to what vi_ acheived above.

No rush either - I will hold onto it until there is a need for an N900.

Hope that is clear enough!

Free to a deserving person apart from shipping from Here (Australia)

Very honourable of you sir!

Can I be the first to suggest Mr Pingu, to aid his efforts in the Supertesting?

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...7&postcount=55

I would also suggest perhaps gathering a community pool of devices which could be distributed as and when necessary?
