N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Hey guys,
So last night I set two alarms for 7:26 and 7:30 as i always do and turned my phone off. I always turn my phone off at night. This morning I woke up and it was bright and i realised my alarm did not go off. I tried to turn the phone on by holding power button, the white light came on and the small vibration(like normal), Nokia logo showed up and the phone turned itself off. So I thought it was dead battery, I plugged in to charge(wall socket) and nokia logo showed up and phone re-booted and came back on. And it's just stuck in re-booting, It comes on shows nokia logo and goes off and then comes back on and just repeats that Anyone had this before?? how to fix this? Thank you |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Did you install any tweak or mess around with some settings? It could be a reboot loop...
If you've messed with something and know what it is then use the following: do the following using cmd on your pc: run cmd as admin cd c:/program files/nokia/flasher Code:
flasher --enable-rd-mode --set-rd-flags=no-lifeguard-reset also once you've managed to reverse it in cmd enter: Code:
flasher --disable-rd-mode |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
no everything is vanilla i haven't installed anything apart apps.
I was able to use flasher and i did the following Opened terminal path to flasher and used Code:
flasher -i Code:
E:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher>flasher -i |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Ok in that case you can try charging your phone using flasher...maybe it has lost the battery reserve power too...
What you can do is just input the commands for a flash: flasher -f -F rootfs.bin If your device gets detected and has lost its reserve power, a message will pop up that the phone is charging...at 11% of battery, flashing commences so just plug it out at 10% and then use a wall unit to charge it... this is similar to giving the n9 a kickstart... |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
flasher -f -F rootfs.bin
says no such file or directory :( |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
ok open cmd.exe as admin
cd c:\program files\nokia\flasher [assuming this is where flasher is installed] flasher -f -F rootfs.bin [rootfs is the main file that you use to flash your phone] |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(

As i checked in E:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher and there is no rootfs.bin file. See here Sorry for so lost and thanks for your help |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
nope rootfs.bin has to be downloaded from Navifirm for your product code,
the name should be DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958_ARM Edit: Once downloaded just copy it over to in your case e:\program files\nokia\flasher\ For easy operation you might want to rename it to rootfs.bin or just keep it as original there is absolutely no difference... |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Thanks downloading now, So what i do now is
I cope the DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958_ARM file to flasher directory Open command line as Admin go the flasher directory use this command : flasher -f -F rootfs.bin plug the phone in Hope it connects and starts charging, once it hits 10% unplug from pc and plug it in to the wall charger, and then fully charge it right? |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
yup correct...hope it works out for you ;)
|
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
It says now
Code:
Charging battery, 3 % battery level (11 % required). Ctrl-c to exit |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
So my suspicions were right...The battery had discharged too much...
Yes it will update at every 1% increase...It'll take some time for it to get to 10% (maybe 20-30mins) since it had drained too much but keep a close eye on it as you don't want it to be flashed and reset your phone... |

So what happened is it did not have even power to boot up, even to start charging it needed to boot kernel. So when I plunged it in to charge it did not have enough power to start the charge ? |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
yes you are right so it needed a kickstart that a wall unit cannot provide but flasher can since it assumes a flash needs to be performed hence it transmits enough power for the kickstart
|
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Ok it did hit 10% and then i nu-pluged it and connected to the wall and it still kept re-booting.
So i used the flasher -f -F rootfs.bin again and it now started with 4% battery instead of 3%. So it seems i will need to repeat this a few times |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
when u want to unplug it just press Ctrl+c and then unplug...It should not need to be repeated but try it once more and then report back...
|
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
keep flasher running and your battery charging to 11% slowly.
then, the flashing process will be continued. btw, my n9 modem failed unexpectedly due to hardware issue conformed today, and sent back factory for maintenance. Oh man, I was gtalking normally with my GF that day 08-05. I'm so depressed with both the poor nokia sw/hw qualities, man. nokia is truly going straight to hell. |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Well at 10 % it still failed to boot, so i'm just going to re flash it
|
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
no no he doesnt want to get it flashed...
mariusmssj just ensure your usb connection is steady so that flasher doesn't report incorrect values...this process is going to take some time so no worries... Edit: Also you are not the first person to face the issue of battery being fully discharged...it has occurred many times if you search around so just search and see how long it takes typically...flashing should be a last resort not a go-to whenever something doesnt seem right on the n9... |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Ok i tried again and i got
yellow icon and text below Reinstall Authorised Operating System :S |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
give it 10seconds it should boot up...since it looks like your device has gone into open mode you may have to reflash it but can you try charging it full then rebooting twice to see whether the error still occurs?
|
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Nope it refuses to boot or charge,
Well this means i will need to flash it :( will the rootfs.bin be enough to flash the device? |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
if you flash a rootfs flash is enough...
|
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
ok it says
Code:
image [state progress transfer flash speed] can i turn the phone on now? |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
ya plug it out and turn it on...
|
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
It's ALIVE :)
and i got all my contacts and texts and everything :D |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Nice job thedead1440!
|
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
i'm wondering:
he said he turned the phone off...how come it discharged the battery then, how is that even possible? |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Thank you the dead one...
My N9 was literally stone cold dead after laying totally discharged for a couple of days. Forgot to turn it off when I left home. As I have Nitdroid on it I thought that has messed things up as the Nokia logo would not even show. The white led just lighted up for like 20 seconds after putting it in charger then nothing. Just dead. I entered the flasher commands in cmd as you said and it took like 20 plug/unplugs into the computer before it actually came somewhat to life and flasher registered the device. Thanks again! edit: if I would continue with the flash (might be healthy for my phone) would that work seeing as I have Nitdroid with Android Jelly Bean installed on it? Would things get corrupted somehow if I clean flash it like normal? |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
If you do a simple rootfs.bin flash the android installation will be deleted...

dont worry, its fixable without flashing i have been through this lately, and i thought i was doomed but found a solution switch off your phone, open flasher (i suppose you know that part so i'll just skip it) when you're in flasher dialogue just type the flash command and connect your phone..it will take sometime but it will connect and flasher will say that you dont have sufficient battery, DONT CLOSE THE FLASHER AFTER THAT This is the main part, DONT CLOSE IT..IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY START CHARGING YOUR PHONE. wait till it reaches 10% and then you can connect to wall charger or just close the flasher and switch it on. |
Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
Phone alive and kicking again. Thanks both of you.

Re: N9 won't turn on, Please help!!! :(
a reflash loses your data... Pls read or ask first as i am pretty sure nobody has mentioned that a reflash keeps your data intact.
you may have to do a full rootfs+emmc flash but beforehand try using the fix malf state instructions to get your device mounted to extract your data... |
