Nokia N9 - User Interface Ideas/Rant
 

Hi..I know that Harmattan is no longer being developed..but I wanted to share some ideas that I think would improve the overall experience

Here goes:

1. Enable pull-up for quick launch even from the 3 homescreens
2. Option for setting default opening homescreen when waking from sleep
3. Translucent keyboard, or option to set level of opaqueness (specially when browsing)
4. Slide up to pick up call (green) and down to reject call (red). Swipe to get more options
5. Active calls should appear as notifications so that one can swipe straight to the call if waking from sleep during a call
6. Dialler should allow cursor to be placed anywhere in the number (like the n900). Useful for adding zero before the number
7. Swipe manager should be without the annoying delay. Should be like the camera shortcut on the iPhone home screen. Possible solution would be to keep other screens ready in the background
8. Universal search should be integrated with social/notifications homescreen
9. Music app should start when earphones are plugged in
10. Wallpaper should show music progress bar along with music controls
11. Long press volume keys for skipping songs
12. Press contacts to call them, long press to open contact (both for contacts and call app)
13. Along with double tap, Direct swipe to homescreen from sleep screen should be an option, but only when proximity sensor detects that n9 is out of pocket.
14. Open in new window - option for opening new web link in background instead of a pop up
15. Allow wifi hotspot in power save mode
16. Nokia handshake logo on startup!!

So you expect someone to implement this or are you going to implement them?

Why not participate in nemo development and help iron out such things so that they don't appear in nemo...

Also a number of things you have stated have workarounds/hacks/mods for them...

Its pretty easy to start a thread and post whatever one thinks is wrong with harmattan but if you are not going to improve it and know Nokia is not interested, I don't get why a thread should be started in the first place...A bit pointless isn't it?

@ujwalsoni I'll donate a large amount of money to you if you can implement all those things in the N9.

So can we start a poll here and do the necessary donations to ujwalsoni? Maybe he can guide us on the figure he expects then we can pool our resources together for him to satisfy all those above excluding those that already exist via tweaks/hacks/mods/workarounds...

Would $1,000 do sir?

Haha.. I don't expect anyone to do them..and I'm an accountant, not a developer, so I can't do them either.
This is a forum and everyone is entitled to add to the pool of ideas..jeeeez..since when did this community become so aggressive!!?

Yet another comparison / I wish it was like an iPhone.

To those that want iPhone features FFS GO AND BUY A FKIN iPhone and stop whining about the N9 not having Apple features.

AMD common did you read the whole first post thoroughly? A number of the things have been done already...This community is excellent don't forget that...

AND before you ask me which ones;

Take that first post and GO COMPARE with the PDF/wiki of Schturman's N9QTweak for a start...

from the lockscreen, i have it so vol(+) plays/pauses, vol(-) skips songs, vol(-) doubleclick plays the previous song, and long-click turns on the flashlight.

One last post here before I'm called on being too aggressive...

The reason I was not polite from the off was because the OP has a history of starting similar threads and even though he has solutions/WONTFIX to some of his issues he still chose to lump it up in one post...

I wouldn't consider the replies in this thread to be elitist, far from it. Unless owning a Maemo / Meego device classes you as being among the elite :D

But I'm sick to death of references to icrap and people wanting the N9 to be something it plainly isn't.

I love mine despite what I personally consider to be its shortcomings. If I decide I want something else I will go and buy it, simple as that.

So if someone likes iPhone stuff then go and buy an iPhone, join one of the plentiful device forums and ask questions there. Like "can I make my screen like the Nokia N9?". Easy.

Surely negativity is wishing aspects of your N9 to be like some other phone?

If you bought a N9 be happy with it. If not sell it and get a model that better suits your needs.

I *am* happy with it and it *does* suit my needs. But that doesn't preclude me from sharing some ideas with the community when they occur to me, regardless of whether any of these ideas are useful or not. This is a forum and people come here to talk. Get over it.

@ujwalsoni you're right.

although I'll tell you why some people react like that over here.. Many devs are putting a LOT of work for little or nothing in return, so it kinda upsets some to see people being unappreciative towards their work and just keep asking for more and more and complain when they can't get things to work because they're too lazy to actually search for the solution which already exists .

Oh, here's what I need:

1. Fix the switch-app/swipe from q or p on the keyboard problem. Tryign to enter 'quit' or 'problem' usually results in me jsut flinging the screen back and forth.

2. Dialer
a. When on a call fix it so that the number pad is visible along with mute, speaker and disconnect buttons. There's plenty of real estate to put a number pad on that screen.
b. Dialer won;'t match contacts that include country code (+1) since my phone company just sends 10 digits domestically.
c. When tryign to dial voicemail, I have to hit it twice. I get an intermediary screen that shows me my voicemail number, as if I care.
d. Answering a call is swipe up + button press. Why do I need the button press? I just swiped!

3. Email
Cannot copy text from emails

4. Browser
a. Cannot search on page for text
b. Cannot tell it to not remember history

I wouldn't mind coding some of these if I knew they'd make it in the update. How open is the code base though?

If we forget "build a new one from scratch with desired features or use another browser that already has it",
Can anyone think of a solution ? Is this doable to the system or to app itself?

Is it for example possible to monitor what application is open on top on viewing, so to speak?
like if stock browser is currently the one, active, and you push "open to new window" something monitors the action and keeps the current browser window on top and puts the new window to open applications, kind of background?
