Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
3 Attachment(s)
So I'm hanging out with my Family for my Father's birthday, when my 10 year old niece decides to play angry birds (something normal which I let her all the time). While the good times roll, out of the corner of my eye, my beautiful N9 falling to it's ?death? Everyone was having a good laugh, even me, while my niece was crying uncontrollably, poor girl. Everyone saw it and knew of course it was in a million pieces.
Now, this is from the 16th floor of a building, and on the other side of the is concrete. When we went downstairs to pick it up, after 10 minutes of deciding whether or not we should even bother, we found it laying there. To my amazement, the phone was indeed intact. With provided case attached to it, the phone seems like it is still functional ! ! ! I mean, I picked it up and tried to turn it on, and the notification light in the lower left hand corner blinked twice. Since then, it doesn't blink, even while charging. Now my question is, seeing that it did blink, is there some sort of miracle to know for sure if it can still be a functional device? I will post pictures of it tomorrow and will try to disassemble the phone, but what should I be looking for to know if this phone can be salvaged or good to throw away at my local dump site. The screen is in a million pieces but still intact. This phone definitely survived 16 floors of gravity. |

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
really!?,title made it sound like bad news. Might have to do a flash?

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
Wow! Sorry to hear that but it's actually amazing that it survived in one piece! Hope you will be able to recover your data. I'm just curious, did it fall on grass? And what case do you have?
Edit: i just did a little calculation. Your n9 hit the ground at aprox 100km/h!!! And about it's signs of life...it might be hard to revive it. You have to open it and see what's destroyed. Battery could devastate it quite a lot and many connections between chips and mb can be torn apart. As I think of it more I'm pretty sure it's dead for good but I wouldn't throw it away. I would leave it as a memorial to that sad moment and a true test for finish quality. |
Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
if it doesn't look damaged you can try to bring it to the nokia centre
|
Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
Seems loose contact to me
1 : put it screen down 2 : tap on the back with hand (not too hard), there might be a chance it will make contact, since circuit is top facing 3 : try turning it on 4 : GODbless :) |
Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
I wouldn't count on hitting it as the contacts must be soldered. You might try though push all chips a little to the pcb and heat them with a heater, just like you fix ps3. You just have to be careful not to burn them but we need someone to tell us whether these chips can bare high temps as ps3 operates normally at much higher temp as our omap.

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
Whoa, nasty. I'm surprised the plastic body didn't shatter.
The lights blinking very early in boot indicates hardware failure. Try to get it taken apart at Nokia Care, or try to do it yourself - it's quite easy to disassemble the N9. |
Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
Wow, this is epic.. Seriously, some phones get shattered to million pieces from a 2-floor fall!

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
I bet Stephen Elop had a hiccough at that time.

but will it blend now?

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
When you say "16 Floors", is this using the European method of counting floors or the American way? Because if it is the latter, it's not so impressive ;)

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
If its dead, can u send me the box??... I lost mine! ;-)

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
Ok, I uploaded some pictures from my webcam, sorry for the quality :/
I will post more as I open the phone and after I stick the mother board in the oven for 10 min. maybe that might help the circuit board and sensors ? |

Let's hope for it. Just remember that after 10minutes just open the oven, don't touch. Don't touch it, just let it cool for another 20minutes.

I definitely want to see the insides of it now, this will be epic if it is still alive somehow. For reference, I think we need to drop an iPhone 5 off of the same balcony :D

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
My girlfriends' iPhone 4 looked something like that when dropped from 0,5 meters :) It is still working though.
Regarding disamble of the N9; My two year old son managed to get hold of my phone when charging and of course he managed to break the flap covering the usb connector. I watched a youtube video how to disamble the N9 and this is the first thing he removes with a single snap when opened. I tried this but it was impossible to remove. I used tools to get a better grip but no luck. Anyone tried to remove this themselves? |

assuming 16 stories is enough to reach that velocity of course. to OP hows the body, any dents? i have on the corner of mine and my gf's lumia 900 too. i just bought a new case to replace it for 40 usd |

The outter casing (body/outside hardware) has no scratches or dents except from previous drops which all had happened without the soft gel case. |

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
oh so you had the silicon case? i might have to rethink my decision "to case or not to case"
using newton's gravitational law to model a non constant acceleration? now thats diff eq i'd rather not lol @lumiadude doesnt matter how high, it'll reach maximum speed in a few seconds |

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
It must have fallen face down... on the glass first... And The I phone too... and the one thing that's common in both of em is the glass.

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
Disconnect the battery, reconnect it, then put it back together, and from a PC, run "flasher -i" and connect the USB cable.
If it responds, the main board's alive. If it doesn't, it's dead, or you may want to investigate whether all the connectors are still where they're supposed to be. The N9 does not make a rattling sound when you shake it up. |
Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
try taking the screen off, and ensure the battery is connected properly. I once had the same thing when taking my n9's screen off, turns out the battery plug was slightly dislodged. Its somewhat secure, but after a fall from the 16th floor... probably became dislodged somewhat

Re: Nokia N9 fell from 16th floor balcony
I vote that if he resurrects it, he gives his phone the name of Jesus.
At least you'd have a great story of why. A friend of mine... his ex-girlfriend's insane parents were Jehova Witnesses and one day her mother had left her cell phone in my friend's car, and it said "Jehova" no the front.... I just shook my head. slaapliedje |
