galaxy note 2 supports multi window split screen

Galaxy note 2 users can now operate phone in split screen mode

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_wfOcA8Agk

Choose an app from side bar and drag in to open new window.

Not going to get into a debate about "multitasking" under the hood, but with split screen for apps means you can do more then 1 thing at once.

You could do this by overskreen browser somewhat currently, but this is "official" support i guess.

If this doesnt get ported to note 1 properly note 2 is a buy for me - you can use spen memo on bottom and copy and drag stuff from top.

Re: galaxy note 2 supports multi window split screen

I don't think it'll get ported to the note1.

But Samsung will update the note1 to JellyBean, with "premium suite" gimmicks and this jewel would be included. The update should come "before 2013" but that's a big doubt.

I think they're more likely to push it through Q1 next year.

Re: galaxy note 2 supports multi window split screen

Now, that is real real multitasking.

Very cool. Would love that in note 1.

@kangal how do you know this is included in premium suite. I thought that was more of a concept for spen related software?

My next phone needs to do that...

This feature is IMO best suited to tablets and of course phablets like the Note...

Bring it to a 4 or even 4.3" screen and you have too much non-workable area...

True, but that goes for evertying. All content is better on a bigger screen.

But this would be very usable on 4 screen as well. Especially if you also have an physical keyboard not jumping up on the screen Sally the time.

Bring this to all phones as soon as possible.

Re: galaxy note 2 supports multi window split screen

yea i agree about it not working for smaller screens

perfect for note though, and something that no other phone really offers.

waiting for 32gb or buy now ? hmmm

another video - official samsung promo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOX3H...feature=colike

Go to the middle of it when they start talking about "ultimate multitasking"

If you notice on the side bar (or bottom or top, you can change) one of the apps is youtube - this leads me to think that non samsung stock apps can also be part of split screen, although how well they work in a window may vary

i really like being able to chat on im while referring to another document, or even the part where they do conferencing on the bottom while looking at documents up top, or even using smemo while on a call. This is seriously convenient.

if this thing works well and robust for me its a killer feature no other phone offers.

will wait till ppl provide more details of this feature but looks very promising.

I agree. I'm really quite impressed with how Samsung has integrated the s-pen with many features you use day to day like messaging, mail, phone conference and simultaneously sharing information. The GN2 has distinguished itself from other devices and is beginning to take a life of its own.

In regards to multitasking, on the GN1 I can already, simultaneously, surf the net, check email, watch something on youtube (and change the size of the screen or put it in background to, say, listen to the music) use linux on android and run fortran code (here I am showing my age!) and have results written on a screen and more. But, in general, just doing 2 or three things at same time is enough for me. So it is not the multitasking that is impressive but how samsung is getting different applications to synergistically work together.

EDIT: According to some posts on XDA site some of the GN2 do not have multiview feature. Below is a link to XDA site set up for Galaxy Note II (Check thread in General called Multi-windows)

N900 multitasking is still better then this.

The idea is pretty good though, just being able to look on a website for some information. And at the same time write something in a text file.

LOL that argument is always so funny. When will you stop. I'm sure I will hear that 10 years from now.

Multitasking to me is to do things faster, easier and with more visibility. This enables multitasking capabilities n900 could only dream of :)

Re: galaxy note 2 supports multi window split screen

actually no, Clove UK (they wrote it on their public blog) has confirmed that early galaxy note 2 shipments did not have the updated roms installed, and that those notes without the feature will get an OTA soon. Some UK note 2s have already been confirmed by xda forum posters who received them as having the newer rom.

But for anyone reading here, I am sure flashing a new rom is not an issue, and I am sure the correct rom will be up soon enough.

as for n900, yes n900 is better at maintaining multiple tasks, but it cannot multi window afaik. for me multi window is something new for a phone (outside of overskreen browser)

There was Cornerstone that has been showed throughout 2011 (by the Onskreen people) as well as another app that was originally looking for an OEM release earlier last year (can't remember the name).

Edit: It was Onskreen Cornerstone after all - another video here

I was just going to mention that myself. As far as I can tell, no developer has picked up on it. I think it would run any app, whereas, the Samsung multi-window may be limited to a smaller set of apps but I don't know for sure and I hope I am wrong here. Also, as another option, there is the app called "stickit!" which also creates a window to view media as well as youtube. This window can be resized as well as put in background so you can listen to music and do some other "task".

I have this working on my Hong Kong purchased Note 2 and it is great and makes people envious until they point out it is a small screen!

Anyway, does anyone know how to edit the apps that I can use or am I at the mercy of whatever Samsung deem to put in the menu?

Split screen (or multi-pane) rules. I have been dreaming of this feature on tablets for years. I am glad that it is finally being demonstrated by a major OEM. It is sure to get picked up in a future version of android.

Incidentally, it is also possible to do the floating video window with the free (and awesome) DICE Player. I tend not to use the feature too often as it requires constant movement of the window to prevent obstruction of the background app, but it works well enough.

Wow that is such ********. The multitasking that the N900 has right now is so much better then having a window split screen.

Android still does not have real multitasking. 2 windows split screen is still just 2 apps. All of the other apps are still in a sleep state. I haven't seen any android device play a video in the background while copying text from a website directly to a conversation you are having.

You can't have more visibility then we have right now on the n900, you can switch betweens apps within a second.

It's funny that you mention that, because I am watching a video right now in a floating window (dice player) while composing this message. Cutting and pasting from another process would be trivial. Since processes are still in memory, it also task switches instantly. I am on a Nexus7.

It's a feature that has been available in Android since the first version (IIRC), though is not often used by app developers. Any other questions?

Yes, split screen is quite fabulous, and a great way to avoid the somewhat messy management of re-sizeable floating-windows on-
screen when displaying content.

I like the way that surface implements the feature for opening apps, but dislike a few aspects of the implementation. First, the proportions of the split screen are built-in: so for example, the main window is 3/4 of the screen, and the split is 1/4 (please note, these are not actual dimensions). Second, when interacting with the smaller screen, it automatically expands. This would be annoying if you just needed a small sliver for a calculator, but wanted to keep the larger screen open for reference. It would also be nice to have the option to split the screen again vertically (eg. 3-pane arrangement).

I'm not sure if, via some setting, the above can be changed, or if the implementation has been updated since I last saw it.

I generally like the way that Samsung has implemented the feature, though think that it can still be improved upon. Still, either implementation are welcome as the underlying hardware running these devices becomes more and more powerful, and the app selection continues to mature!

Re: galaxy note 2 supports multi window split screen

I have just upgraded my Note to 4.12 TouchWizz ROM.

Firstly, somethings look faster (but actually aren't).
Google Now is a great feature which doesn't cater to me.
Camera improved but it, and Gallery App are prone to FC.
I liked the UI I had on AOKP (status bar, notifications, lockscreen, recents, 360' rotation, hold back to kill).

But the TW UI is "close enough" but falls short.

I will ultimately stick with TW ROM because Camera is good (AOSP is terrible) and I have the Modded Split Screen feature.
