When i bootup on nitdroid or firefox OS my wifi is blazing fast and longer distance connection...

Re: N9: Wi-Fi 802.11 N slower than 802.11g

Please, be nice. An9 meant that pointed out that it's something wrong in Meego as on Nitdroid it works nice. It's a good point to know that it's not a crappy module but a bug in software.

Re: N9: Wi-Fi 802.11 N slower than 802.11g

Yes...that is exact of what i meant about wifi...thank you.

Re: N9: Wi-Fi 802.11 N slower than 802.11g

"Blazing fast" and "longer distance connection" is hardly a scientific test comparable to work done by qspb in his first post. Unfortunately, until someone redo similar test on own harmattan powered machine + redo it using Mer, nitroid, or other alternative OS, we can't filter out crappy module or inferior hardware.

I'm sorry friend, you seem to be in hurry...but we all want linux, winxp, android, firefox os, amiga os, maemo...and all that, isn't it that of why we bought our beloved N9...it's just a bug...and i guess elop planed it on our devices to anoy us a bit...so maybe we will jump on his winmo sveming car!

You can try disabling power saving mode on the wifi

szymeczek34 2012-10-08 07:01

Re: N9: Wi-Fi 802.11 N slower than 802.11g

I believe saving mode for wifi exists only on maemo5. Harmattan doesn't have a feature like this. At least non that I know of.

i have the same issue. And when running nitdroid the wifi performance actually is much better. Both distance and dl speed. Never had this issue prior pr1.3.

at work we have the same internet provider but the router only running in b mode and its it much faster .

going to do some test at home.

I haven't used it from n9tweak yet but you can use GConfik to edit the gconf value...

The gconf value you are intersted in:

Code:

system/osso/connectivity/network_type/WLAN_INFRA/idle_timeout
Default value is 600(seconds)...Change it to a high value...

Re: N9: Wi-Fi 802.11 N slower than 802.11g

I went to router and set multicasting to off. Dl speed are now greatly increased even when running at n mode on router.

will test more but it seems to work much better.

Edit:
After doing some test with it on and off the results are the same.
However now wifi works good again. Dunno why.

Re: N9: Wi-Fi 802.11 N slower than 802.11g

In some cases it is possible if your router can only run on one band of wifi, you could be running on a,b or g thinking its n just because a lower speced wifi device is on the network. Apart from that I have noticed that internet on my n9 is quite slow compared to the likes of my macboook.

I went to the terminal, then I connected to my wireless N network, and after that I executed 'develsh', 'iwconfig wlan0 power off' commands and of course I verified power saving mode status by viewing 'iwconfig' command's output. It said power saving mode was disabled. Then I tried to download a large file from the home network again. Disabling power saving mode made no difference.
Okay, I also blacklisted ipv6, rebooted my phone and redone all measurments - it gave no result.
So I conclude there's no need in using some kind of 'tweak' to make the power saving mode prohibition permanent, cause such a measure doesn't take effect at all.
Moreover, I've read articles which had been suggested, and I can say I have no problems with authentification/deauthentification. My connection is stable, I haven't noticed any kind of interruptions or ping loss. My problem is that enabling Wi-Fi N mode on my router reduces connection speed half instead of boosting it twice.

In one of the suggested articles the author said the problem was in the driver and suggested reloading the driver with N mode support disabled. But you see - it's not a desired solution. The aim is to get N mode work perfectly. So.. maybe somebody can suggest using another driver?

I can say that I'm disappointed in Wi-Fi hotspot/tethering N9 function too, because it doesn't create normal AP (Master Mode), it just uses Ad-Hoc mode. And also there it's impossible to use WPA/WPA2 encryption with 'WiFi Hotspot' app.

Why the hell does not iwconfig work for me?

My router don't even support disableing n mode!
I can see it on but cant turn it to only b/g mode. Strange but true.

Edit: Ran speed test and had 11.63 Mbit/sec

have 13mbit/sec on pc so I'm happy with that. Seems my biggest problem right now is wireless range so i ordered a Range extender.

Will get back to you later

Re: N9: Wi-Fi 802.11 N slower than 802.11g

I'm sorry for the lack of detail in this.

The other day I forgot to pay my phone bill, resulting in texts, calls, everything, not working, which seemingly completely irrelevant. Then, whilst waiting for them to reconnect me after having sorted out my phone bill, my N9 asked to connect to my wifi, Ithought why not? Surely crappy temperamental internet beats no internet.

And it worked perfectly.

Once 3g resumed working and I could send messages again, the wifi went back to being rubbish.going offline doesn't have the same effect, and for the life of me, Ican't figure out what made it start working when I was disconnected.

Beginning conjecture, enter conspiracy theory:
What if Nokia crippled wifi to compel N9 users to only use 3g?
IKnow with my N900 Ibarely used 3g, but now, I'm an exclusive 3g-er..

I just realised that removing the Sim should have some kind of effect, will play around with it, but don't hold your breath, the protective rubber case is a biatch!

Re: N9: Wi-Fi 802.11 N slower than 802.11g

Hi,

Every (experienced) user of the N9 knows about wifi N connectivity issues. However unless you have a 100 Mbits internet connection (cable, optic fiber, etc.) or use big files transfer between your N9 and another device on your network, the 54Mbits allowed by the wifi G are OK according to me for everyday use.

I would be OK to get only wifi G connectivity for more reliability in the connection with public wifi N hotspot for example. At home i have to set my router (Freebox server V6) in G mode juste for the N9 to the detriment of my others devices (N8, PCs, Android smartphone & tablet) which work all flawlessly with wifi N. So even at home i would be happy to activate wifi N mode on the router.

the article here http://adeadhamster.blogspot.fr/2010...-problems.html gives some clues about the N9 problems with Wifi N. The driver seems to be the cause of our problems.

So I've 2 related questions :
- Which version of the driver does the N9 use ? iwl4965 or iwl5000 ?
- Can we deactivate on boot, by a script or a command, the wifi N mode as described in this article (modprobe iwlagn 11n_disable=1) ? This will force the N9 to work in G mode and what we would "lost" in therorical speed, would be gained in reliability even in public hotspot. If yes what is this magical command ? :)

Re: N9: Wi-Fi 802.11 N slower than 802.11g

I confirm, i don't have any connection issues with my N8 and my router in wifi N mode. :cool:

It's finally a N9 flaw. A sort of regression... :(

So can we find a simalr command than the one for intel chipset ?

Sounds like the wifi speed is incresing when you start watching videos on the web...probably nokia disabled "wmm" with purpose to save battery consumption.

Hi,
As i write in this post i've send back my n9 to vendor 'cause I think 802.11n problem is due to hardware. so, I only write here for your information ...

As many N9 users I know that I'll have to "bidouille"/hack it to have the best phone ever, but, if something like wifi donesn't work properly ...

It was very difficult to manage my email account, update mail box (only headers), read mail and get SIP account working over wifi ...

I didn't read anything about any link between screen lock and wifi but, in my test to make it work i used ping (ping -t rm696) rm696 is default dns name of n9 on my local network.

ping lost many packets, until my n9 get in "spleep mode" (screen locked after few seconds) and suddenly all pings came back ! I Unlocked phone and again, ping get lost, I locked screen and ping came back ! :eek:

Of course, as I was running these experiments, all my mails were downloaded, my SIP account connected and so on ! but of course, unable to download mail content when screen is on and SIP get in netwok search mode :mad:

Of course, in connection manager, wifi appear to be connected with good signal strength.

I use 300mb/s 802.11n network with wmm active on a netgear wnap320

I really think it's a hardware problem due to screen.

Hmmm...
Smells like screen taking up too much CPU and network dropping in lower CPU usage priortiy...
As if it would be hardware, locking the screen would not necessarily fix the issue...

But interesting topic!! I have had problems with Wifi too (apart of the usual bugs). It would be *great* to improve this!
Please don't give up! :)

ok, but do you have problem with 802.11n wifi.
I successfully get my n9 work on 802.11g access point but once at home, with 300mb/s 802.11n, like many users on this post, connection was unusable...
what is your wifi class ?

[edit] sorry, I didn't see you are author of post ... your N9 seems to work better than mine on 11n wifi.

P.S. "M/s" means "Megabytes per a second" - it's not a bitrate, it's a real file transfer speed.

A while ago I tested download speeds of different devices in my network downloading a same file 3 times in a row from the internet. The internet connection isn't a bottleneck here for wifi (not sure about raspberry pi's 100 Mbit ethernet.). Router is a Netgear wndr3800 running openwrt.

Not a good wifi benchmark per se, but it gives some idea about the relative performance. N9's 802.11n peaks at about 4.3 MB/s. The wifi signal isn't the best possible (router next room, behind a wall) and seems to affect n9's wifi performance more compared to a laptop using g standard wifi, which is slower but gives more consistent readings.

Some good news.

Before trying to recompile wireless driver or going to NITdroid forum I decided to reflash my Nokia N9. You see, many errors and misconfiguration problems are possible due to updating the phone over the air several times, so it's certainly better to make a "clean install" of phone firmware. So I followed these instructions to zeroize and reflash my N9: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...16&postcount=1 .

Then I turned on my phone, installed developer-mode, networking utilities (including wget), and redone all my measurments.
First I set up AP configuration with QoS disabled; here is a part of my hostapd config:
Code:

hw_mode=g
ieee80211n=1
ht_capab=[HT20+][SHORT-GI-20]
channel=6

I tried to download a large file and the average speed was ~ 2.6 M/s (according to wget output). It seemed to be usual 802.11g speed.
Then I edited hostapd config and enabled QoS:
Code:

ieee80211n=1
wmm_enabled=1
ht_capab=[HT20+][SHORT-GI-20]
channel=6

The result was exciting. Enabling QoS improved the speed, not reduced it. The average speed was ~ 2.9 M/s. Sometimes it jumped up to 3.1 M/s (!). Such a result is unreachable with 802.11g-only mode.
Okay, then I made hostapd use [HT40+] instead of [HT20+]. The speed reduced. It was ~ 1 M/s again. With QoS disabled it raised up to stable 2.6 M/s . And such a result isn't surprising, because according to iw output, N9's wireless module supports only HT20 and SHORT-GI-20 capabilities, so using QoS with HT40 results in reducing speed. I think it's quite normal.

But at least I've managed to get my 802.11n work properly with HT20 and QoS enabled. The speed is 2.9 - 3.1 M/s now (it's definetely higher than usual 802.11g speed), the connection is stable, so I'm able to use Internet, ssh and http file transfer without any problems. I'm very glad.

But I know that some other N9 users said they had no problems with their 802.11n routers.. maybe in neighbour topics on this forum. Can somebody evaluate actual Wi-Fi N speed in a similar way and post the results here so that we can compare different users' experience?

P.S. "M/s" means "Megabytes per a second" - it's not a bitrate, it's a real file transfer speed.

can u give more details, step by step? tks

I think that problems several people (including qspb) have are router specific. As you see from my earlier post I get consistently about 4MB/s (4,3MB/s max) without any gimmicks, which is clearly better than 802.11g.

Though compiling the newest wl12xx module and using the latest firmware could be useful. Atleast we might get real AP mode for our N9's. You can grab the sources (and the firmware) from http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/wl12xx if you want give it a try.

See some of the kernel work planned in other threads...

In qspb's case, the issue became a non-issue after a re-flash, he then consistently got perf. roughly in the ballpark one would expect.
See posts I linked to in my prior post....

Would that enable "full" n mode?

Might be a little different from others however as one of the guy mentioned in the thread that the WiFi speed slows down in device active mode.

I can confirm thats happening with me too. I tried transferring a 18mb file with Winscp and the top download speed was 3MBps when device was locked and idle. However I tried to copy the same file again while keeping my N9 active by just changing the home screens and the speed dropped to 700KBps.

I know this test is not very reliable but still I can confirm that the speed varies in Idle & Active mode. This happen in both N & G mode. :(:confused:

As Jalyst suggested that a reflash can do wonders but I don't want to do reflash just because I don't want to set up my phone again. (Tired) :o

Can someone please guide me how they have overcome the above issue? :(

Cheers
