Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
Hello everyone
I am having some issues with my n900 and I need your help, around a week ago my n900 usb port got broken and it came off the device, I took it to a friend who fixes cellphones and he resoldered the usb back again, its the second time he fixes it for me, the first time there were no issues, so when he put it back together and turned it on a reboot loop started and it kept going for a couple minutes then it finaly turned on, for a couple hours it was working just fine but then out of a sudden it rebooted again and started with the reboot loop again, this has been happening since then, i did some research around and it apears that flashing sometimes helps, so i flashed the device, vanilla first and combined latter as it says on the wiki, it worked just for a couple hours and then it rebooted again, the only diference is that now it doesnt loops most of the times, these reboots happen at all times no matter what i am doing with the device, some times it also happens when its charging, i havent seen it reboot when its on stand by. I am takeing it back to my friend to check if theres anything wrong with the hardware. Can you please help me to find out what is the reason for these reboots? I installed HealthCheck and it shows: Boot Reason: sw_rst Please help, I really like my n900 and dont want to change it for an other cellphone. Thanks. |

once you have done it, open a X Terminal, type Code:
~ $ root if you have a µSD card, put it in the N900 (next to the camera lens area) and do Code:
~ $ root |

dmesg only shows the messages since the last boot, thus won't show what caused the last crash / stop  instead Code:
~ $ root and attach kmsg.txt to a post here after the crash |
Re: Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
Done, just waiting for that reboot
Thanks |
Re: Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
Sorry i think i had it but aparently I am doing something wrong
I typed root cat /proc/kmesg >/media/mmc1/kmsg.txt & but its giving me: Nokia-N900:~# cat: can't open '/proc/kmesg': No such file or directory It did created a kmesg.txt file but once the device rebooted and I tried to open it it was empty |

good news is there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your HW. bad news is, ain't exactly a HW engineer  i merely compared your file with what happens on my N900 when i slide kbd, switch from 3G to WLAN aso. all looks perfectly normal to me :o i know it is frustrating if you don't have another N900 possibly even another mobile phone, but could you try & made a STOCK standard install (still with your personal data, of course, but WITHOUT any extras-testing, leave alone extras-dev SWs...) :( even better, not even extras stuff  my way of saying that it could be SW also hinted at maybe by the fact that if the device is idle, it doesn't crash. i assume that even when idle, you have 2G/3G or even WLAN on, right? slide HW kbd to check if you are still online aso? |
Re: Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
Thanks a lot for your help, yes when its idle the 2G, 3G or WLAN are still on and it shows online, everything works as usual, I get calls, IM, SMS, etc. when idle.
with "could you try & made a STOCK standard install (still with your personal data, of course, but WITHOUT any extras-testing, leave alone extras-dev SWs...) even better, not even extras stuff" you mean uninstall any extra repositories apps? sorry got confused there Thanks again |
Re: Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
naaa, what i meant is flashing
but if we are going to point fingers... i noticed in your kmsg.txt that you use kernel power do you overclock? if so, simply set the frequencies back to default |
Re: Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
again thanks a lot for your help!
I dont know the reason but it just stoped rebooting, I didnt changed anything but right now it has been two days without a reboot, still wondering what happened. |

Aaaand its back
yesterday wile taking some pictures the phone rebooted and kept a reboot loop until the battery was empty. today I flashed again successfully but when I booted the device it all looked normal at the begining but when i accessed the status area it was outlined with a pinkish line, that had happened before the flashing when the reboots started, I tried to access the file manager but it showed empty (so I am guessing there was no access to roofts?) then it showed an error saying device format unsupported (I think there was an other word that i couldnt read) and rebooted, after a short reboot loop it booted again but now it looked kind of like the attachment, there were no images or icons at all. Right now its working but just after several boots, it has nothing installed right now but it has rebooted as well. Please help I have no idea what to do now :o Thanks PS. just tried to oppen the default apps and none its oppening not even xterm it shows internal error --- closed |
Re: Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
how old is your device?
are you the 1st owner? |
Re: Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
I bought it in april 2010 and yes I am the first owner

Re: Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
Just reflash, and then, set r&d flag force_power_button (see wiki for more info about settings r&D flags. Normally, reflash is not required for setting flags, but your filesystem got corrupted due to constant, badly interrupted reboots.
Problem should be solved. /Estel |
Re: Help please: reboot loops following USB port repair
Thanks a lot for your help, I did reflash twice, do you advice to flash again?
I just hope I know someone with Linux or Mac OS since I just have windows :o |
