N9 Video Player

How I can play Full HD videos on my n9?
What player I have to install?

Re: N9 Video Player

short answer : you can't (99% never will )

longer answer : poor gpu cannot play full hd videos .

meegofan 2012-10-19 21:14

Hi! Due to the slow cpu and graphic chip, it's not possible to play full hd videos on the N9. But IMHO the playback of full hd videos on the N9 doesn't make any sense since the display resolution of the N9 has a resolution of 854x480 pixels only. Moreover, as the N9 has no HDMI port, you can't stream videos in more than standard resolution to a TV-set. My advice is to reencode the videos on your computer before transferring them to your N9. Use the settings described in this article: http://www.developer.nokia.com/Commu...oding_settings

you missed his point.

"Full HD" is a bizarre industry term that means "1920x1080 pixels without interlacing".

playing videos where the size in pixels of the images displayed exceeds the size in pixels of the screen is a waste of computation.

the CPU or GPU needs to spend valuable time {and battery life} downscaling each image to fit in the viewing window.

the fact that the Shamsnug Goolaxy S2000 can do this comfortably may in fact be an indication of it being wastefully overpowered. not to say that the Nokia N9 isnt slow, or that the Goolaxy isnt fast, i dunno.

anyway, this problem can be avoided by downscaling the video first to fit the dimensions of the target screen. you lose only information that the GPU would be throwing out anyway.

the n9 can comfortably play the highest quality video that the screen can possibly show. i seen em!

For many people these days, their time is more valuable than that of the phone CPU/GPU. Not many want to spend time re-encoding their video collection (plus storing two copies of the same video) for use on their phone.

Not always. It depends on the codec.

Re: N9 Video Player

i said the n9 CAN play 854x480 videos comfortably. i did not say it ALWAYS did, nor that it could play ANY 854x480 videos.

if you are trying to play a video of you putting your n9 in a bucket of whiskey, it will probably not play very well on your n9.

I never re-encoded any of my 720p movies for the Samsung Galaxy S which I owned before N9,

Mplayer, Kmplayer combination is somewhat better but the problem still persists with a lot variety of 720p videos, and re-encoding is a tiresome activity.

Re: N9 Video Player

yes the goolaxy has swankier graphics. {20 Mtriangles/s vs 14 Mtriangles/s}

this probably has some relation to it playing videos more smoothly, but its also likely that the formats arent being hardware accelerated at all on the n9, or some other issue like that.

since youre always transcoding videos exactly the same for a given device, i find it to be quite straightforward. i do it automatically with an ffmpeg script, and i find it to be not much slower than just copying the gigantic movie in the first place.

Re: N9 Video Player

Goolaxy win, whatever you gonna said, but i still choose n9 over it, :p
btw my optimus black was able to play any video up to 720p, and p970 has same gpu (sgx530) cmiiw

Would you please guide me how to to do it? I'm using windows 7 x64. Any free readymade software? Thanks.

im sorry, no.

i have never used windows 7, nor windows 6. or 5.
or 4, 3, 2, 1...BOOOM!

i only use real operating systems, not flashy toys for rich playboys on their yachts. i say, good chap! if you have that much money to burn, you might want to use GNU/Linux (C). i know the price is steep, but the software is just so much more refined and tasteful.

Could you share the ffmpeg script you use?

PS. I don't think we need any OS flamewars here.

Have a look here. XMedia Recode can batch-encode multiple files too.

This thread appears to be a reprise of an earlier one. :)

I do! I waste my valuable sleeping time by kicking off a batch of re-encodes before going to bed. :) And, by reducing the resolution of my videos, I also end up reducing the file size, which means I'm wasting far less space when I store them on my phone.

My favorite tool is the open-source program Handbrake. It works on most platforms (and will take full advantage of your 64 bit processor). It has lots of different presets available, but I usually just ignore them and manage the settings myself. I go for a minimalist H.264 encoding, which usually works fine; after selecting H.264 as my codec, I go to the "advanced" tab, set "Maximum B-Frames" to 0, and switch off "CABAC Entropy Coding", "8x8 Transform", and "Weighted P-Frames". After that, just choose the resolution you want, and set the thing off and running.

yeah this ^

---

If you watch videos from the device.. you should encode them with a resolution that is the same with the resolution of your screen (if you want to achieve best viewing experience).

Anything higher than that won't make a difference.

of course if you plug the phone to a tv (hdtv) , well then you can put 720p/1080i (if supported by phone or/and tv) films in it.
unfortunately the N9 does not have an HDMI port

so, always try to watch 480 x 854 videos (or at least as close to this resolution as possible. more or less)

Re: N9 Video Player

Since it is a topic about encoding, I'll ask a question.
Is there a way to encode videos so that they appear in gallery and not videos? I have a lot of videos from my previous phones and would like to have them in the same place as my photos.
I would also like to compress my n9 videos because they take a lot of space without loosing them from gallery.

BTW, a lot of HDTVs now have the ability to play videos themselves, and have USB ports to connect to an external storage device (such as an N900 or N9). :) No HDMI port needed!

For optimum encoding settings check out the following thread I just created: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...07#post1284107

Hi... First of all..

Fact - 1 : N9 cannot play HD / High resolution videos.
Fact - 2 : I still love my N9 like anything.

No point in spending 20 pages time for something which is not available for now on your phone.

For YouTube lovers.. Simply use Cute-Tube app (YouTube client for N9). This is simply best & allows to download / play videos.

Since its meant for N9. It will download videos with best possible resolution compatible for N9 (and will play in full screen mode, to be noted)

Case Closed.

Saying that it cant is probably a long shot.
Using the dsp + mpeg4 you can probably decode easily (considering you have 1 GB of RAM).

Well, if you're smart-arsing here, then do it right. Here's mine:
HD means 1080p/i and 720p. You're referring to FullHD only which the N9 can't play and that's annoying, true.

N9 records 720p with 30fps at about 6 Mb/sec (not too bad) and plays encoded 720p fine, if specs are met. :)
