Anyone tried 128 GB Micro SD XC cards?

They're still a bit expensive, but I might hold out for one of these when the price comes down if someone can confirm they work.

Re: Anyone tried 128 GB Micro SD XC cards?

For a moment there I thought 128GB uSDXC cards were out.

It's too big to fit inside the N900, but since it's rated at UHS-1 speeds, once these shrink to uSD sizes it should work.

Re: Anyone tried 128 GB Micro SD XC cards?

Oh, whoops! Silly me... so consider this thread a placeholder until they are actually released.

Re: Anyone tried 128 GB Micro SD XC cards?

+ if you have mugen cover + you will tear up any size (even 32 MB or lower) microSD card + similarly cheap SD (fullsize) reader, you may construct trivial microSd->SD adapter, that will fit entirely inside N900's body.

Not much reason to do so, though - SDXC cards are still ridiculously priced, and will shrink to micro sizes very soon.

(perhaps slightly off-topic) Alternatively, you can fit two of those babies in an N800.

Out of curiosity - no software problems in handling SDXC on N800?

Well, the proprietary exFAT filesystem isn't supported for obvious reasons, but reportedly they work fine after reformatting to something else. There are other threads here with more details but in summary the cards are electrically identical to SDHC, and the only software-side difference is that the size in blocks is a 22-bit value for SDHC which even the Diablo kernel supports just fine.

As far as I understand all SDXC cards will work, when they are released. This should see us up to 2TB. The only issue should be they will not work out the box as will require reformatting.

Re: Anyone tried 128 GB Micro SD XC cards?

the should be usable without reformatting once the updated version of fuse gets integrated along with a build of exfat tools for it.

Re: Anyone tried 128 GB Micro SD XC cards?

Older hardware does not support XC. I dont know if the N800 will or not, but it predates the XC specs. According to wikipedia - XC compatible devices did not start appearing until 2010.

At least the N800 does handle SD version 2 - so SDHC up to 32GB... and I think the hardware could in theory support XC - but not at higher speeds and possibly not without software/firmware support. I'd love to be proved wrong :p

(As a side note _ I have several USB adaptors that support SDHC, but really annoyingly not SDXC.)

As with the N900 this only "officially supports" SDHC upto 32GB (only 16GB's were available on first release). This hasn't stopped me installing a UHS-1 64GB SDXC card.

I agree it will probably not be running at UHS but I have 64 GB storage none the less.

Hardware-wise, XC is HC. Wikipedia has more details.

There are some reports of working cards here.

Speed-wise, Nokia disabled high speed (either 24 or 48MHz) support in the driver as it caused problems with some cards (and I was also too chicken to re-enable for everyone in the CSSU), but there are simpe patches to re-enable it around for those who need the extra speed and know what they are doing.

That's because the SD driver runs on the embedded controller inside the adaptor and can't be updated :-(

Thats great! I've never owned an N800 but it's good for those that do.

Indeed I was just pointing out that HC support does mean XC will be supported.

N900 with 2TB (or N800 with 4TB) storage space is extremely neat to imagine, especially, that no reasons why it shouldn't work. Now, what those "new" devices without *SD slot will tell us?

Sure, it's a neat thought, right up until your brain gets around to imagining the part where you launch Canola and it begins indexing 4TB of audio files.

Re: Anyone tried 128 GB Micro SD XC cards?

I have a couple of adaptors (MicroSD 2 SD) i just can't remember where i bought them, but yes mugen cover with normal battery or some special battery config then you can fit the adaptor in there, and then you got 128GB + 32GB (28'ish GB).

EDIT: found one

Nice find, but:

Not really tech-highlight, or? -but cheap- ;)

IIRC the whole "works with SDXC" thing is only up to UHS-1 (Gen 1 SDXC). The compatibility details after UHS-1 are sketchy at best (at the moment)

I was just considering to extend my N900 storage capacity. So what is the maximum that should work normally? I thought it was 32, but on the official (?) data it says 16 GB; while here you're discussing even larger capacities.

Ok first off all, it is a direct connector so MAX Limit would be (with future updates) 999,999,999,999,999,999 TB

I use a 64GB microSD card in my N900 regularly without problems. I reformatted the card to FAT32 (they are exFAT when sold). That is *currently* the only difference between SDXC and SDHC cards. From what I understand eventually they will be physically different and will not work.

When N900 was released the largest card available to test was a 16GB. However 32GB definately works and as you can see in above 64GB Sandisk has been tested and works if reformatted.

119.03 GB available on the card

Probably, bit busy @ the moment & you'll have to give me instructions.
Don't really want to install any additional s/w to what I have now as
current set-up is rock solid... (and I'm a little short of space;))

Re: 128GB micro SD

I see flash storage as the future, alongside cloud storage. Just like I have for many years.

I was a bit bummed that SONY didn't choose to go with microSD for the PS4.
The difference between them is that microSD's can get faster and faster and get larger and larger as technology advances, unlike set-limited disks. And can have a partition that's rewritable so that it can save all your game files/save data.

And it uses less space, less battery, runs faster, runs quieter, runs cooler and adds less weight to the device. Meaning it can be used on the home console, the portable console, a tablet and even a phone. Oh did I mention that its a perfect solution for 3D games, 4K games, and Virtual Reality games?

Most BluRay disks are 20-25GBs, and there's heaps of 32GB microSD... they're even affordable.
And right now we're on 128GB and 256GB, next year we'll hit 512GB, and probably 1TB by 2016.

lonk 2014-09-17 13:28

Re: 128GB micro SD

Is there a way to measure the memory card performance directly through the n900? (random write and read speed etc)

theres currently 128gb for microsdxc and 512gb sdxc, I think it will take longer for the next memory leap because it took so long for microsd card to get from 64gb to 128gb

Re: 128GB micro SD

I would also like to know the brand, as I have wasted quite a bit of money on supposedly 128GB micro SD cards. None worked. The Samsung 64GB EVO micro SD SDXC does work on my N900.

Re: 128GB micro SD

My card is a sandisk. You MUST format it on the N900. May take more than one attempt. Ignore the not supported messages.

Thanks for the reply. One of the 128GB cards that I have is a Sandisk, which I got from Ebay for less than $20. Must be a fake.

I ALWAYS use sandisk. Have two 64GB and now a 128GB. All work flawlessly but in my experience, you MUST format on the N900, ignoring 'unsupported' messages. May take more than one attempt.

Storage capacity is starting to creep up to the n800 capacity of 2 128gb sd cards (haven't bothered to see if the n800 could handle a 256gb sd card ...yet...maybe it would be too much...won't know til it's tried)
