Re: The Tiny Windows 8 Release Thread

I really wished to be the first to get it just like I did with NFS The Run. I came to the first store I can find 1 hour before the official release sitting like a statue until the packages came then I immediately handed in the money and got it! Shame, stores will be closed, someone will beat me to it this time :/

Looks pretty nice, except for the os possibly.

windows 8 (the PC edition) is a fantastic operating system once you get used to it.
takes a couple of days and then the love begins.

it's also much lighter and faster than windows 7 (which is a good OS as well).

gives life to older systems than struggle to run windows 7.

Debian with LXDE is lighter and faster on my Rev 1 Raspberry Pi than windows could hope to be a on a quad core 4gb ram desktop, and the best thing? it's not Microsloth.

the only reason that 8 runs better than 7 is that after more than 20 years, MS have finally realised that you can actually optimize code

So, we got to give MS credit for their work (better late than never) on Windows8.

I liked Ubuntu 12.04 as well... but I came back to Windows because of the lack of apps (one example is ... guitar rig , Guitar Pro and many others)

I liked Ubuntu until they started with that Unity crap. I'm not sure why they think a tablet-style UX is suitable for desktop machines with a keyboard and mouse. Also, it seems some Linux distros are becoming as bloated as Windoze these days. I suppose that's the price of attracting new users. If my time had no value, I'd switch to Arch Linux.

EDIT: On topic - I will never use Windoze again. After years of suffering, that's one of the best things about not having a boss. I can use whatever OS and software I want. *Insert evil laugh*

Tablet??

It's just a regular desktop, with the taskbar on the side. I have tried to use it on a tablet. Really. It's unusable. It relies heavily on the keyboard. Gnome shell is better on a tablet. In fact unity is too much like a windows 7/mac os hybrid.

But I got used to it and since 12.04 I think it has reached a very nice level of usability. You just tap super or alt and write. No more searching in menus, be it the current application menu or the system menu.

They have a lot of ground to cover towards consistency overall but they're working on it.

What I hate most is the new adware thing, especially because it involves amazon.

Now back on topic:
Windows 8. This is a tablet OS. With a desktop mode. Awesome, I always wanted a tablet with desktop mode (just like easy debian). The desktop isn't disruptive in the tablet workflow, it's just another app.

The other way around I think it's awful. The already complicated Three level multitasking (apps->windows->tabs) has now become 5 level. OS -> metro apps -> desktop -> apps -> windows -> tabs. And you can't switch between a metro app and a desktop app but with alt+tab (if they haven't changed it after the consumer preview). I think they broke the whole concept of multitasking with those two levels, when you are working primarily on desktop mode.

P.S. I just want to go to a store and hide and wait for the first wave of disgruntled WinRT customers comes back and this happens:
-- I downloaded winrar and it says I can't install it, it has a problem
-- No you can't install apps on WinRT it's like the iPad
-- But the store doesn't have many apps like the iPad.
-- It will grow
-- Never mind, take it back and give me an iPad

yaa, what i can tell you about it... you will need it again, although you don't like it, depends on your custumors of course, but don't put too much hope in that...

i am my own boss and there are too many "apps" i need everyday:
Outlook
Photoshop
Excel
Acrobat
Word
InDesign

and on and on and on... and there is just no alternative LINUX-way... i really tried id, but it does not work... OpenOffice and Gimp and stuff are good, i know, but there are many limits...

customers want their stuff and they get their stuff....

Edit: and please don't tell me about Thunderbird or Lotus Notes, i tried that too and it does not work with customers overalll...

This alrady is integrated better in KDE just use Desktop Activitys and there you have it. You can even script it as you want.

On my laptop I am using one activity when disconnected from external screen and another activity when connected.

Different activitys can also work on "linux tablets" ofcourse, but because of microsoft patent FUD and soon also loocked bootloaders we probadly will never see any real Linux tablets on the market runing KDE (or ubuntu) :(

But people should atleast consider to checkout KDE(kubuntu or opensuse edition) if not already done, so they know that Windows8 is not something fresh, Microsoft just copy suff here and there over and over again and then say "Hey we come here with something new for u" :(

I am really enjoying KDE at the moment. I used to be a big GNOME guy, but the major suckage that is Unity drove me to look at the alternatives. Now I'm sticking with KDE. :)

I know where you are coming from, I have previously had to use Windoze for debugging Symbian applications, but apart from that, I'm OK, and I don't plan on targeting Symbian devices again (it's a clusterfvck). I don't really need any office stuff in my daily work, which is where MS has the stranglehold, due to proprietary document formats. Qt Creator, Eclipse, Netbeans, various SDKs. These all work nicely in Linux. :)

That's the "problem" with Windows, and always have been. No-one likes it, but it gets the job done - always. If the "job" only consists of surfing the web and reading mail, then anything works.

Actually, I discovered after switching to Arch Linux, I've spent less time managing my distribution than I normally do with Fedora or Ubuntu. I've been letting several my Linux boxes run by themselves for more than a year between updates, and once you've fallen a couple of regular updates behind, it takes a surprising amount of effort to get caught up. With the Arch "rolling update" system, though, you pretty much use the same command whether you updated a week ago or a year ago, and I've had far fewer glitches during updates than I've had with the other distributions.

In any case, I've found managing an Arch system to be quite a bit smoother than I expected. You might be surprised how easy it is. :)

Ubuntu Core + Xfce4 = ridiculously excellent idle times on my Pandaboard. From a performance standpoint, Unity on ARM blows.

Window 8 RT is going to be a big flop a doodle. I want a tablet with full windows. is that too much to ask for.

Windows 8 will sell because even Windows Vista/ME sold.

Windows 8 phone, i wanna see how that does, especially since Nokia is trying to get Microsoft into doing some good things like bringing file sharing over bluetooth! How archaic. NFC w/ payments. camera with OIS, wireless charging, huge screen and whole 50 grams of bloat.

Their will be tablets with full Windows if you open your eyes. RT plays its part if you simply want the tablet as media player and browsing.

Check out surface pro and iconia w700.

i consider myself a heavy excel user plus switching between documents and multiple folders in between and also relied on the non-obstructive start menu to search my files. Looking at Windows 8, i'm afraid that this heavily distrupt my work flow, especially start screen that tries to start menu, why in the world would they think that it's a good idea to replace it with that is beyond me, the desktop and tablet mode should be exclusive environment. Now the desktop experience is disjointed.
