Official ubuntu installer for Nexus 7 - can we make it our next maemo device?
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/10/u...lable-for-devs
I think this could be our new maemo device. If installing ubuntu can be done with a one-click installer, we could also boot some flavor of maemo on it, be it nemo, cordia, or ubuntu with hildon and call it our own. It's a decent piece of hardware, the kernel is open https://android.googlesource.com/kernel/tegra and it can be easily bought. |

I was thinking the same thing after reading that article!

Very nice, anyone tried it out? I might have to get a nexus...

Not neccesarily maemo, but this might be a chance to get full linux on a good portable device. With full linux I don't mean ubuntu, which gone mad since 10.10 imo, but I am looking at openSuse and Arch :)

Hopefully next week, I'll have one in my hands, first thing is to try and get nemo on it.

Re: Official ubuntu installer for Nexus 7 - can we make it our next maemo device?
Mmm, Lots of questions...
One of the draws to Ubuntu, is the ease of use. However, Hildon is possibly an even easier UI to use, especially with fingers. If it can run Ubuntu 12.xx, why not Debian 7-arm? From there, I wonder - how portable are the Hildon packages? And, can the devices's native software, like phone, sms, etc. be meshed along side Debian/Hildon/Maemo/whatever, so both can run simultaneously and neither conflicts with the other? ... Is this the naissance of Maemo 7(?) - one that runs on non-nokia devices? If so, might all be quite "disruptive"? |
Re: Official ubuntu installer for Nexus 7 - can we make it our next maemo device?
As the link reads, this does have some performance issues so maybe ditch the unity desktop in favor of LXDE, that could be a start?
On the whole, this is a great move forward for mobile linux users |
Re: Official ubuntu installer for Nexus 7 - can we make it our next maemo device?
How is Ubuntu not "full" linux? It's basically 100% Debian with some additional bits and a sucky window manager.

Putting a proper linux distro on a fondleslab is like putting a Ferrari engine in a Sinclair C5. :p

Re: Official ubuntu installer for Nexus 7 - can we make it our next maemo device?
There was a project a while back to package the Hildon libraries up nicely, so that they could be installed on any ARM linux - which worked quite well on Ubuntu. So maybe not full Maemo, but Ubuntu base with Maemo UI should be quite doable.

Or cordia...

Re: Official ubuntu installer for Nexus 7 - can we make it our next maemo device?
I'm kind of confused about this whole Nexus 7 situation. Are all drivers for running GNU/Linux with GPU acceleration available for it? I.e. one can build let's say Mer/PA image and happily run it there, or there are some "underwater stones"?

I had to google for a Sinclar C5...WTF who is buying stuff like that? Unless you're planning to install a Ferrari engine.

Add another OS to the list...
WebOS Ports gets Open webOS up and running on the Google Nexus 7 It also looks as if the WebOS ports team have been taking hints from one of our good friends in the maemo/mer community too :) |
